And as fans of a movie that's doing poorly in theaters, I would hope you would go out and support the film instead of spread a means for it to lose more money.

Shin Godzilla made $81M world wide according to Japanese sources. It cost $15 million, Toho has called it a massive, unprecedented success for them, exceeding all expectations.

It was the #1 highest grossing live action Japanese film in three years - The #2 2016 release in Japan and #3 overall. (Your Name. and The Force Awakens [spilling over from 2015] beat it out.) It is the 5th most attended Godzilla film in Japanese history. It won and was nominated for over 20 awards across 7 film awards ceremonies and festivals, won the Japanese Academy Award for Best Picture, has two 4D attractions at Universal Studios, a VR game, 3-4 mobile games, a statue that's replaced the Heisei Godzilla statue and a partridge in a pear tree. Toho is STILL making money off that movie today. So yes. They've long, long since passed the point where they make their money "back."

Add to the fact that Toho owns most of the theater chains in Japan and the domestic distribution costs become a moot point. They know they can make money off of Godzilla themselves--They clearly still are.

Now I do agree with the fact that Toho is enticed by the idea that they don't have to lift a finger while Legendary/WB's movies make them money. That's probably the only part of this deal they absolutely adore. At the end of the day, however, renewing Legendary's contract with Toho means putting money in to the rights to merely use Godzilla. Toho's not cheap about letting others use the character, and for good reason. Legendary may have to pony up more than before while adhering to new stipulations that allow Toho work on their own films. If these movies don't make money worldwide, Legendary may not consider the investment worth it.

Huh. I don't know if i want to watch it, I feel like it may ruin the theater experience and I won't want to go back to the theater to see it again, since I can watch it for free there.

And I want to go to the theater to support the movie more, lol.

I had no idea they still called it Gravity Beams, that is strange, considering the fact that electricity powers up his abilities (as seen when he bites the electrical grid thing in the final battle at Boston)

I do think it would be awesome to see Kong with lightning powers, but I don't know if I actually see it happening, guess we'll just have to wait and see!

They already finished filming Godzilla vs Kong before the critics reviewed KOTM, unless they do major reshoots, the critics have no say in this upcoming movie.

just a little sidenote about the ghidorah having lightning powers thing, in the monarch sciences site and in interviews and stuff they call Ghidorahs lightning as "Gravity Beams" (I'm not saying you're wrong btw, you are right it is clearly lightning but they call them gravity beams for some weird reason without showing any gravity like abilities)

in older movies I had always speculated that his gravity beams resembled lightning but were in fact beams of super intense gravity, this explains how buildings are crushed by his gravity beams since lightning doesn't crush buildings

I just found it weird that they didn't do something like that in the new movie

also I agree, I would love to see them team up, both of them are so cool and powerful on their own so I'd love to see the damage they could do together

 Here's why I disagree that it pulls Toho away.. 

Shin Godzilla made $79 mil world wide. All the cost to produce and market the film fell on Toho. It clearly is not a cheap movie nor is it cheap to distribute and deal internationally. Also there is no guarantee that a film makes its money back.

WB/Legendary takes on all production costs for the monsterverse. Toho simply reaps the reward. What business walks away from essentially free money? I believe it is in Toho's best interest to continue their deal with WB. However, I do think that Toho is a very proud company and they will eventually have a "we can do it better" epiphany. That is why they eventually cut ties.

3.) Hadn't thought of that, I guess it probably would be set only a year after KotM. Then again, that news article in the credits about Titan waste as a super fuel could be hinting at some rapid technological advancements, we'll just have to wait and see.

5.) I'd say one can even straight up win before the team up, they just don't have to kill them for it to count. Like Mothra Vs Rodan where there's an obvious winner but no casualty as a result. The original didn't kill either monster at the end, I assume this one won't as well, that would be a surefire way to get fans really steamed.

Towards the lightning powers SaibaShinrei mentioned, I think I'm in the camp that wants that to happen(it was in the original after all), but I also can't really see a way to organically integrate that into the story without it feeling like a repeat of Fire Godzilla's origin. I do like the mental picture of Kong's fur crackling with electricity though, maybe they'll figure it out.

I just hope the producers don't listen to the critics and make the human characters the core of the story...

Well, Dark Phoenix is absolutely trashed by the critics. Now I have no idea whether the movie is good or not (haven't seen it yet). But since a lot of moviegoers are sheeps that obeys the command of RT, maybe they'll stay away and watch Godzilla instead. Ha, maybe this might unintentionally help Godzilla's box office with longer legs. Or maybe I'm too optimistic....

You have some great points! I'll respond to them.

1.) I don't know how i feel about the lightning powers, they gave Ghidorah lightning powers in KOTM instead of his gravity beams, and i feel like it may seem repetitive, and a little unfitting for the Monsterverse's Kong, but it would be cool to see nonetheless.

2.) Yeah, the kaiju out of the 17 i really want to see are leviathan and Titanus Typhon seems pretty cool.

3.) Yeah, like that one part in K:SI when he is fighting the skull crawler and tries to break its jaws. It is a signature move for Kong so it makes sense why you would want it.

4.) Yeah! I really hope they don't just see each and fight for no reason, i want to understand why they are fighting.

5.) and yeah, i don't want either to die, but i want a winner. I also do really want a team up, Godzilla and Kong teaming up to fight a bigger bad is something that has never been seen before, and would be awesome to see.

Sadly, I think its over after GvK. For whatever reason these giant kaiju movies just don't resonate with the US audience. International #s are obviously important, but without a super successful US draw, I think its over. None of us want to see dramatic budget cuts and half baked movies moving forward.

IMO we have been lucky enough to get 3 really good movies with a 4th hopefully on the way. I will cherish this 4 film monterverse gift that we have been given and not expect more.

1) King Kong gaining lightning powers (preferably absorbing the red lightning seen in the storm that surrounds skull island so that kong and godzilla will have different coloured powers when they fight)

2) more of the 17 titans (especially leviathan AKA Nessie)

3) (this one is very specific but...) every movie with kong has to have him either do his jaw snapping finishing move or some variation/play on it so I'm hoping that in GVK we see either Kong attempt to break godzillas jaw only to be blasted in the face with atomic breath or godzilla uses his atomic breath in close range and kong grabs and closes godzillas jaws to stop the atomic attack

4) a really great reason for them to fight, I don't want either of them to be mind controlled or to be portrayed as just a villain, the audience should be able to empathise with both of them and understand why both monsters believes it is necessary for them to battle

5) (the same thing we all want) a definitive winner, neither needs to die, they can team up in the movie but I really want to see one be defeated, similar to Ghidorah defeating Godzilla in their first encounter in KOTM, neither died but Ghidorah beat godzilla, I would like for something like that if legendary wants to team them up or doesn't want to kill either of them  

That has to be Kamoebas, not Gamera. Gamera's not a Toho monster (never has been, the films were by Daiei), and the rights to the character are held by a different company.

Reminds me of how Godzilla killed Orga, only far more awesome. Temporary or not, it was still amazing. Those Thermonuclear pulses were so cool. Though I wanted to see the Spiral Red Atomic Breath.

I love the monster verse. It is so great and I always can't wait to see what monsters are in it next. Godzilla King Of Monsters was a great film. I don't really know what the critics are saying at all but I thought it was a great movie. The entrances for all of the characters were great. It was so cool that they played the original soundtrack in many scenes of this movie. Also the CGI was great. All of the monsters looked pretty solid to me in this movie. Also fire Godzilla at the end was a cool scene for all Godzilla fans to watch. It showed the bond between Mothra and Godzilla. The best monster in the monster verse to me is easily Mothra. She is a fun character and also it was a great experience to see Mothra grow up in this movie. I would never be a Godzilla fan if it wasn't for the Monsterverse. I love it. It also has King Kong which I think he is also one of the best. I have been a King Kong fan longer than a Godzilla fan so the monster verse helped me like both. Also hopefully it will show me many other monsters that are pretty cool. That is why I like Godzilla.

Mr. Movie those are some good ones, pretty similar to mine.

1. I would love to see Godzilla and Kong go at it on Skull Island. 

2. I would love to see a post credit scene with a new monster for a new movie.

3. They both to survive. 

4. To be all about the monsters.

5. See more of the hollow earth.

I think they will make some more solo movies introducing some new character like death gidora and also Mechagodzilla because in King Of Monsters they introduced the topic of monsters coming from alien planets. Although it is a little hard now to make a completely solo film because of all of the new monsters I think they might do a Mothra film and also a Gigan film. Those are both major character that I will love to see.

Ohhhh, that does make a lot of sense.

I'd assumed Mothra's energy was what kept Godzilla from going nuclear and obliterating Boston by giving him a way to direct the energy instead of releasing it all at once.

True but they could and to hazel Godzilla is King the real king.

1.) McCreary would be great to have back, the soundtrack in this movie is amazing! Incorporating the classic themes into a new and more modern soundtrack. Probably one of my favorite soundtracks, it would be great to have him return. I would also like to see Giacchino or Zimmer take a crack at it.

2.) I love seeing Kong use trees in fights, like that scene in K:SI, i would also like to see it in GvK

3.) This would be cool, but I don't think that GvK will be set very far in the future, there may not be too much new stuff

4.) Yeah, that concept art of Monsterverse Gigan got me hyped, I would love to see more TOHO kaiju as well.

5.) Yeah, I can surely agree. I would love for Godzilla and Kong to have to team up, it would be something that we have not seen before, and it would be amazing. What i mean by a clear winner is like a Batman v Superman situation, where one has the upper hand, but something happens that prevents them from finishing it. I would hate to see one get killed, and it would be bad for the future of the Monsterverse (Kong and Godzilla are the biggest pulls, it would be stupid to kill one of them).

Loved the movie - finally my inner 8 year old got an epic 'Zilla movie. Fire atomic Godzilla getting up and killing Ghidorah was my favorite part. Although I had many others including Rodan and Mothra going at it. Also glad we got more Zilla than we did in the 2014 version.

Godzilla will always be my favorite - since I was 6 years old and won a drawing contest (gigan vs Godzilla). More than probably any other movie character, my love for him has never waned.

Huh, I thought that Mothra only made it stronger, because the Monarch scientists were counting down to his thermonuclear blast throughout the end of the movie before Mothra sacrificed herself. 

I guess this is the best way to describe why he wont have this power against Kong.

Sadly, In order for Godzilla to defeat King Ghidorah is his Burning Godzilla form because King Ghidorah is freaking OP!

I hadn't thought about it too much, but yours are good. I guess to add some variety I'd like to see:

1.) Bear McCreary returning to score the movie with more of TOHO's original tracks, especially some from 1962's KvG.

2.) Kong, Godzilla, and a tree. I don't care what they do with it, I just want that callback.

3.) More new military technology, I'm curious to see what they've cooked up since KoTM.

4.) It's a longshot, but some more TOHO kaiju would be awesome. I'll take more new ones instead, just give them some screen time.

5.) This is more a response to your 4th point. As much as I would love them to stick to their guns and just pick an outright winner, I don't quite see it happening(though I guess Civil War pulled it off mostly). However the more I think about it, the more I'm actually rooting for there to be a surprise big bad at the end of the movie(But like an actual surprise, not totally spoiled in the trailers like Fire Godzilla). Why, you ask? For the very obvious reason that a King Kong/Godzilla team up is something we've never seen before, and would be one of the most epic things ever put to film.

Godzillatheking123: I almost posted something else cause I almost misinterpreted your text. I completely agree with you. It’s stupid to think something is “SJW” just because it has a strong message. I personally can enjoy a movie with a strong political message if it’s done well, even movies with messages I disagree with. But, I usually stay away from films like Captain Marvel because not only their messages are usually poorly done, they sometimes actually border on the extremism that KOTM was accused of (even though it didn’t have extremism). I like to speak with my wallet and that’s why usually don’t see “SJW” films.

Finally saw the film!

My favourite part of this film was the fact that it managed to string together so many great monster moments into a coherent story that maintains your interest and pays it off with incredibly powerful and impactful cinematic moments. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this movie had some of the greatest moments for the 4 TOHO classics.

As for my favourite Monsterverse Titan, it's gotta be the three-headed devil himself, Ghidorah! He's just brimming with personality, power, and presence. The big 3 P's! He's sadistic, a bully, and a real prick; however, he's got the power and intelligence to back up this assholeish behaviour.
