FordBrodyLover99Godzilla 2014 Forum(DONT HYPE) second international trailer

MADISON@

I get what you are saying. But the thing is, this is (atleast supposed to be) an international trailer, which means its for other countries. Notice how it lists the movie as coming out on may 15th? Im getting this movie may 15th as a matter of fact, and i think this was a shitty trailer made for all of us extra-audience no one cares about.

Can i prove it? No. But i can try.

MadisonGodzilla 2014 Forum(DONT HYPE) second international trailer

I dunno, I don't believe this is real. Probably just a fan edit 'released' as the international trailer to gain more views. Especially since they already released an International Trailer which included ALL of this footage. If they had yet to release an Internationanl Trailer at all, I might buy it, but as it stands, it seems pointless to release 100% recycled footage in a trailer.....and it's too long to be a TV spot, which is typically the home of recycling.

If you google it, you don't find the video posted/hosted/streamed on any official or  even quasi-legitimate channels. The movie news sites which are linking/reporting the trailer are of medium level legitimacy at best. But they are just that, REPORTING. The actual sources of the video links are shadier than even the reporting sites are. It's not listed on ComingSoon.net, IMDB, or anybody else of repute.

I'm sorry, but I'm really skeptical about this one.

Like others have said so what Kong is less in height i think folks forget that it was kongs physical strength and intelligence that kept him in the game against godzilla!

I also say that it was a very cool feature when you watched it for the first time and you saw kong gain strength through lightning because you didnt know that that was going to happen.

also i always thought godzilla simply swam away just like kong did! i always saw it as a tie.

i hope they come with another kong vs godzilla and also give him a larger size than the gargantuas were!

well... i cant say that there wont be anyting in comman, perhaps a few conections, but those mystical things that i saw in the script of 94 most likely wont be in the movie.

but maybe the mutos might be somthing like an incarnation of the scrapt gryphon? because we still  know little about these strange things. just a thought.

Fair enough. I agree the language barrier can be a hard sell, but I typically don't have that issue when I'm watching a foreign film that's subtitled. Granted I've spent the past decade studying the different approaches to acting/language in each country and Japan does tend to have a more theatrical approach to on-screen performances than most.

And while I agree that even though a character is given an arc it doesn't mean it always works, there's plenty that still work in relation to the genre and the times. Could Glenn and Namikawa's romance have been fleshed out more in Monster Zero? Absolutely. But Glenn was a supporting character in a sci-fi epic where his romance was a mere subplot. The movie was Godzilla's first foray into pulp-science fiction and the character's off-beat romance fit in to that subgenre's mold. Namikawa's death may not have had a lot of weight to it, but Adams and Mizuno have such strong performances that their final scene bleeds off the screen with great importance. Sometimes it's not the weight or development of the characters, but the energy they promote.

Granted, both energy and arcs don't always work-- I find Destroy All Monsters' characters fairly stale and The Return of Godzilla's characters are about as boring as GINO's. But for every failed attempt there's that many more that offer something worth looking into.

I hope to God that the new film features strong characters with lively energy and I'm fairly certain it will, even if I'm not convinced they'll be as memorable as some that have come before.

Danzilla93Godzilla 2014 Forumwho has seen Monsters?

I absolutely love Monsters! :) I had heard of it before Gareth was announced as the director of Godzilla, but when the announcement was made, I looked into the film a little more.  I found nothing but mixed opinions and reviews, which made me nervous for Godzilla.  It took me more than three years, but I finally sat down to watch Monsters a few months ago, not expecting anything amazing or really special.  Boy, was I wrong.  The movie had an effect on me that most movies made these days haven't... it had a sense of wonder.  Watching it put me in the mind of Spielberg's early films, particularly Close Encounters of the Third Kind, one of my all time favorite movies.  Monsters' restraint with the creatures was to the fim's advantage, and I never found myself frusterated at the lack of monster footage.  In fact, we see far more of them than I thought we would, and the scenes with them are always special in some way.  Without spoiling anything, the last scene with the creatures nearly brought me to tears.  It was a profound moment of beauty, beyond human comprehension.  It was that moment that fully put my mind at ease about the selection of Gareth Edwards for the new Godzilla film.  Later learning the cercumstances under which the film was made only furthered my respect for it and Gareth, and the potential for Godzilla became overwhelmingly apparent.  The film is not for everyone, but it conected with me in an amazing way.  Gareth Edwards could very well emerge as the next visionary filmmaker and story teller of this generation, and his impact on Godzilla's history could only be the begining.

Well, since what character arcs one finds compelling is subjective, I'm not sure we will find agreement here.

I will concede that part of my disatisfaction with the characters is the language barrier. Whether watching dubbing or subtitles, it really does detach me from being able to really get emotionally invested in the movie. For me, this isn't just with Godzilla movies, but really any foreign film I've watched. It's just hard for me to get it past it. If you don't have a similar problem, then seriously, good for you (not meant to be sarcastic).

That being said, what I do think is worth mentioning, is just because they give the characters something to do, or create a characte arc doesn't mean that the arc itself has weight or resonance. It's kinda like when you have that friend who tells a lame joke...and you GET the joke, put the punchline just isn't funny.

Many Godzilla films don't even bother developing significant character arcs, and the only purpose the characters serve is to pilot a machine or observe from a boardroom (Heisei MechaGodzilla film and Final Wars are the two jumping to the forefront right now as egregious offenders of this, but there are many others)

There are Godzilla movies which attempt a little bit more, but the success is limited. Like the 1974 MechaGodzilla film and it's sequel, or GMK, in fairness DID give their characters relationships and things to do. They even gave them some sympathetic moral conundrums to work out. But in the end, it just didn't suck me in. They get props for trying, but the execution just wasn't there for me personally.

And even the movies which DO have character arcs that succeed in drawing me in, only achieve that success with a few of the main characters. They aren't hitting on all cylinders. Granted, there a lot non-Godzilla movies which do succeed on all character fronts, so I don't begrudge the Godzilla movies too strongly for this. Movies like the original 1954 film, Godzilla 2000, Heisei's King Ghidorah movie all had some character(s) who struck a chord with me, but then missed the mark with others.

So yeah, I understand we probably won't reach an agreement here, but yeah, the number of Godzilla movies with interesting characters for me personally, could probably be counted on one hand. The number of movies where they at least TRY would probably take may hands and my toes, but still.

That doesn't mean I dislike all those other Godzilla movies. I enjoy almost all of them on some level. Just at different levels of depth for different reasons depending on the film.

And that's part of why I'm so excited for Godzilla 2014. It might be the first Godzilla movie ever for me which really does hit on all cylinders for me. Best Godzilla movie ever incoming! It will hopefully be quite a treat :-)

I've always been fascinated by the 1994 Godzilla script, along with the 1970's version that was almost produced.  The Gryphon sounded like an interesting opponent, but the characterization of Godzilla felt a little off.  Its interestig to compare the sript with the 1995 Gamera: Guardian of the Universe; they are very similar, from the hero monster created by an ancient civilization to defeat the enemy monster to the enemy monster itself, a ravenous beast that grows as it consumes other living beings.  While it worked amazingly well for Gamera, it wasn't as good a fit for Godzilla.  Ultimately they changed it dramatically and it became the loathed 1998 version, so its no doubt that, despite its problems, it would hav been a much better film that GINO.  That said, I doubt any elements form this aborted script will emerge in the new film.  We are going to get something original and truly amazing this May. :)

"Weak characters has been a problem that has plagued over 75%-90% of all Godzilla films ever regardless of the series."

@Madison

Can't agree with this in the least. Even in the 1970s, the characters were fairly strong, even in a pulpy sort of Forbidden Planet kind of way. But that was the genre for any related movie in the 60s-70s. The fact that, circa 1950s, post-Godzilla, Honda and his team didn't really know what to do with characters during the third act really made an impression later on. (Which is odd sense the original film made very good use of them by then.) Rodan, Varan and Battle in Outer Space, all botched the third act with spectacular effects-- but it got boring since the characters had nothing to do. The 1960s rectified this and were typically given some great, rounding arcs, particularly in Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster and especially Monster Zero.

I recently watched Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster and was astounded by how good that movie really is. Akira Takarada's character is absolutely sublime and he exits the Showa series with one hell of a performance. You could tell he was having fun playing a fugitive.

Even when Godzilla was a hero that didn't omit some great characters and dark movies. Terror of MechaGodzilla is about as drab as the Showa series got since the original movie. While the film features some classic telescoping, popular in the 1970s, the tragedy between Ichinose and Katsura is no less enriching.

Realism regarding the series is never and issue for me as that was very far from the point by the time the 60s rolled around.

As for the Millennium series, I by and large agree, but mostly in connection with the Heisei series. It has some fine merits to it, but no greater than the stuff that had come about a decade before it. vs. Megaguirus is pretty boring though... And the characters are just awful. Absolutely dislikable...

I doubt it's a official, the tail is hooked instead of straight and the overall toy design also looks different. I think it's a knock off, a pretty damn good knock off but a knock off nonetheless.

G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumDestoryah is Overrated

Lets give the guy credit for actually digging up this topic and instead of dragging it out into a new one...

@GodzillaFan1995

True that Destroyah isn't much different than SpaceGodzilla and his Oxygen Destroying powers seem to only go as far as its microscopic trait when it eats the fish away-- then it's gone. (Which I don't understand. You would think that trait would have evolved with him, but... whatever... Heisei series...) Then again Destroyah really isn't the Oxygen Destroyer. He's just mutated by Oxygen Destroyer-- coming from a Precambrian era where it thrived without oxygen. When the Oxygen Destroyer was detonated the creatures awoke and began to mutate from its exposure.

It doesn't excuse how generic and poorly executed Destroyah is in some places. It would've been nice if they had gone the extra mile to make Destroyah a little more unique in his actions from SpaceGodzilla. But that's Kawakita for you.

@Durp004

"Destroyah was represented by the Oxygen Destroyer as evident by the fact he was in the movie to kill Godzilla. He came close."

I find this comment rather curious. Other than the aquarium scene, there really isn't anything in the battle against Godzilla to suggest he's created from the Oxygen Destroyer. Unless there's a deleted scene where the Oxygen Destroyer shot lasers over and over. Destroyah being "in the movie to kill Godzilla" is really weak connection to the Oxygen Destroyer-- the list of monsters, characters, aliens, weapons..etc... that "want to kill Godzilla" round the block all the way to the original film. Even if it were true, it didn't look Destroyah had any greater desire to kill Godzilla than anything else in the series.

Destroyah might infact be Godzilla's strongest enemy, but vague association, the audience being told what to think...etc... but that hardly makes him his greatest.

Durp004Godzilla ForumDestoryah is Overrated

This is still getting argued on? I mean whatever your personal thoughts are on Destroyah he's only been in 1 movie. There are characters like Mothra Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla who collectively are in about half the movies in the series but we're still arguing over a monster that was in 1? If you want to make a topic about overrated any of those 3 monsters would fit it better than Destroyah.

As for that last post they never said he wasn't any more durable he could have had better defenses too. They can't literally make him an oxygen destroyer because that would be ridiculous even for a Godzilla villain. That's like making Godzilla a bomb that just walks into the city detonates destroying everything like a nuke would, and walking back into the water. They're personifications of the weapons that doesn't mean they have to do exactly that. Godzilla represented the Nuclear bomb and that was evident by the destruction he caused in the first movie. Destroyah was represented by the Oxygen Destroyer as evident by the fact he was in the movie to kill Godzilla. He came close. No bodily injuries besides the horn ,but once again as I've said before he dragged, thew and beat Godzilla down for most of the fight at his strongest. No monster in the heisei era came any closer without a human mind and plan behind their actions. Ghidorah was winning when humans were controlling him. Biollante fought him after the anti nuclear bacteria was injected into him, and mechaG was piloted by humans with lots of planning and data to back up their plan. Destoyah was just a monster. No1 helped him do better, made Godzilla weaker, or showed any indication that he was aware of any weaknesses. In fact Godzilla is at his strongest, and he's the 1 that gets help from the military. So could the fight have been done better? Of course as all heisei fights could have but from what you see and the things you know you can determine roughly how strong the monster is in comparison with others. Thus a lot of people see Destroyah as the strongest Godzilla foe.

thing is godzilla maybe more powerful but he still has the same durability as his previous form, so destoryahs weapons should have distintergrated his skin right off, however that energy beam was pretty effective but why does he even have that, how does that have to do with him being a living oxygen destoryer, and if he is born from a weapon that can remove oxygen in water and air then shouldn't he have the ability to strip the air of oxygen making people and godzilla sufficate. really as gman has said, they way destoryah is represented, he is no different to fighting spacegodzilla. if anything that laser sword was the only weapon that was pretty effective and caused scared damage to godzilla.

I think Monsters can give us some clues on how the mutos may look and behave. It will be interesting to see how Edwards handles the movement of Godzilla, who will obviously have some constraints since there's only so much latitude Edwards has with that character design, and the mutos, who can be designed from scratch.

duckychillGodzilla ForumHow can anyone like the Millennium Series?

I completely disagree with the first three films, G2K had its problems but I think it had some of the most likeable characters in any film and a refreshing new design which is my personal favorite. The Godzilla Prediction Network was a great original idea, I liked the fact that the military was a real military, no fancy fake weapons.  Easily up there with anything done in the 90s.

GxMegaguirus had some great action sequences, the opening scene is probably my favorite from any G-film and I especially loved the ending with the Dimension Tide falling out of orbit and having to lock onto the Gryphon. The smaller larva version could have used some work but was a great idea, favorite scene being the one killing the teen in the alley. The characters are a bit weaker but the action makes up for it IMO.

I honestly don't know how anyone can't like GMK, the action sequences are amazing, the suit is amazing, the characters are extremely likeable. Just an all around great movie, the only thing I would have changed is the ending. I thought it would have been a stronger ending with Tachibana sacraficing his life to kill Godzilla.

This is where the Millenium series goes downhill for me, the MechaGozilla movies have a great concept with the bones of Godzilla and some flashy action sequences but I can't stand the characters. The including of old Toho films into its universe seemed odd and out of place as well, while we try to develope a story to go around this monster battle here's a random clip from War of the Gargantuas. While the new MechaG design is probably my favorite I just hate that they went in this direction when the first three films in the series were far superior. There were some very good ideas in the two films, they just could have been done so much better.

Final Wars... ugh. The design was the worst used in the series, I think the fast paced story could have worked better if they didn't make the aliens so obnoxious. "We are Xilians, we are here to harvest and eat you... and be hip and cool too!". While I loved seing so many Kaiju brought back from the dead: Gigan, Angilas, Manda and Gimantis most noteably as well as Godzilla fighting Zilla, the cons WAY out weighed the pros, I mean Minya? Really? King Caesar? He should have been left back in the 70s with Jet Jaguar. He worked in 1974, not so much in 2004. But what really rubbed me the wrong way was Hedorah!! My favorite! Lets give Hedorah two seconds on camera and give King Caesar a whole battle where he kicks Angilas like a soccer ball. WTF. And last but not least, you have all these kaiju in the film and what do you do? Give them all small roles and put (surprise, surprise) Ghidrah and Mothra in the final battle... cause that's never been done before. Atleast they put Gigan in at the end too

I was expecting just monsters in this movie - which there is but not a lot - but after giving it a second watch, I actually began to like this story with these two characters, instead of waiting for the actual monsters. Then you can see how some people thought it was very very good.

Also if anyone who hasnt seen it yet, I recommend you watch the special features. After watching them it gave me a whole better look at this movie, the way it was filmed was like... taking advantage of every surrounding, which was good I thought. Some of the people who you see the characters talk to where locals who volunteered to be in the movie, and Gareth even said that a lot of the people they crossed were all positive about it. I dont know about you but this made me like the movie a lot more.

Pretty much everything has been established about this movie now. I imagine Gareth will do just as well with the characters in Godzilla than in Monsters.
