Does someone know just how much Legendary is getting in terms of % of the box office from China (or whatever other metrics they use).
As much as I'd love them to, I don't think they'll bring up mechas right now... can't think of a way they can do it without being just '????'
I think your points are very good, tho I doubt kotm will end up as a success... Still, hoping GvK does better, and is enough to show there are still people who love Godzilla/Kaiju

If I were to give an official warning to everyone who didn't contribute something we wouldn't have anyone here without official warnings--Including myself and Chris.
It does occur to Legendary may be able to keep more of the Chinese revenue since it's owned by Wanda, but I've not seen any source or confirmation of that so far.
This movie could have legs and break even, or even make a profit. if that is the case this movie wouldn't be a flop, and then you have GvK which is more of a gurunteed success than KOTM was. I think the monstervers has a descent chance of going on after GvK, but maybe like a movie every twoish years like they have been doing. I don't think kaiju films are big enough to put out one a year. they wont make enough return on an annual basis i think. IDK, that is a whole other topic though lol.

As for dvd/blu-ray sales, I know that. It may not contribute officially to the budget, but heck, it is revenue to the studio, they would be happy to receive money as a business. If there is great sales, the studio is not going to just ignore that.
As for box office, China is a getting to keep a little less than usual this time, compared to other movies, athough I need to check where the source came from, but that's what I read.

Whether or not he's happy about the movie failing at the box office is not grounds for a warning. So he won't be.
Also the industry doesn't normally factor Blu-ray/DVD sales into budgets this big. For some reason they see receipts from those sales as a cherry on top. I think they're crazy, but it's how it has always been and that line of thinking hasn't really changed.
I think it's a little early to say whether or not the movie is a flop, but it isn't looking great. Among the theater takes, distribution costs, overseas theater/distribution costs, massive marketing campaign and two-thirds that China gets to keep in their territory--It's going to be a tough battle. It actually opened as high as Shin Godzilla in Japan, but we can't really factor the money it makes there. Per the agreement with Legendary, Toho gets to keep all the money it makes in Japan. (Which makes sense.)
Hopefully it has Skull Island legs. Regardless, I've braced myself for the extreme likelihood GvK will be the final Monsterverse entry. I've expected that for the last couple of years--Best to embrace what we're given while we can.
Speaking of break-even, let's not forget DVD/Blu-ray sales as well.
macumbalove: You are forgetting whether the movie will have a long leg or not. The thing is, you are taking positive glee in the failure of KOTM. No Godzilla fan, even if they dislike the movie, will want a Godzilla movie to fail. That means you a troll.

Sure, it's perfectly legitimate to critique the Godzilla fanbase, I mean, honestly, certain corners of the G fandom needs a good reality check. That being said, this fella seems to say nothing but negative things about Godzilla, his fans and wishing for the failure of KOTM. I really don't see what point there is for him (or her) being on a Godzilla forum...except to be a troll and rile people up.

Batman v Superman heavily teased that "one will fall" as well, and they wound up teaming up in the end. It would be a poor buisiness decision to kill one off. i think that one of them will be very close to besting the other, and then a powerful foe, like mecha king ghidorah, or something else created with ghidorah's DNA, will emerge and they have to fight, that way there is a clear winner, but both are still alive so that nobody is too upset. If one does kill off the other though, as much as i love kong, i hope it is godzilla, he would be a better lead for future monsterverse movies because he is a bigger name.
This leak was debunked, the guy who did it gave a false leak for another movie.
I am going to stay with team Godzilla, to me, Kong is another false king.
I have major doubts. I bet the deal Legendary has with TOHO prevents them from just killing off their kaiju without any real reason. Also, Legendary would not ever name a kaiju world destroyer lmao. Also, This ending would cripple the monsterverse and prevent them from making any more movies. This ending would really make the godzilla fans angry, and im sure TOHO wont let them kill Godzilla that fast, Legendary would try to make it emotional and long.
Also, the plot synopsis for GvK is as follows
"As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever," the official synopsis teased.
This plot "leak" we are reading has nothing about monarch in it, but in this synopsis, it appears a large part of the movie will focus on them.
all in all, It would be a horrid buisiness decision to kill off kong or godzilla, you would upset too many people and the movie and monsterverse would suffer, and the official plot synopsis sounds nothing like this "plot leak"

I love King Ghidorah but Godzilla needs the Dragon Force now! I gave King Ghidorah my vote to save him and we lost that war. I join Godzilla now in blessings for revenge on every T-Rex Kong killed. OK, I'm new here so forgive me if this theory has been discussed before but, there has been a disturbing lack of "King" preceding Kong's name in the Monsterverse films and KotM put clear emphasis on how important a "King" figure is for the Titans. I think it's pretty obvious that Kong is going to earn his "King" in GVK.
I do like the idea of a Batman V Superman style "battle turned team up" against a greater evil and I think there are going to be some other key players we're not going to know about until closer to the time, but the confirmation that there's going to be a clear victor means some people are going to get pissed off no matter what they do.
Hmmm. This does not look amazing. 180 mil is descent, but it is still not even close to being a real success. These numbers may be a little low as they are just an estimate, Avengers endgame was set at 346 mil opening estimate but actually had a 357 mil opening weekend in the U.S. so maybe this is the same with KOTM? we can only hope, otherwise this movie has to have some strong legs to carry it on since the future of the monsterverse is hanging on how well KOTM and GvK do. luckily this movie has no real competition for a bit, aside from maybe Dark pheonix, which has low box office tracking and looks bad. a lot of kids are also out of school now, giving the cinemas bigger audiences on the weekdays as well.

I think it would be way too soon to bring back Ghidorah in any shape or form, I think the end credits scene was a more long term hint as it would be a little ridiculous to have such a wealth of interesting monsters and just bring back one that was in the last film, except as a robot.
Plus, Monarch is building the mechanised titan, Jonah has the head and, many times throughout the film, Jonah's organisation is credited as primarily dealing with DNA, I think if anything is going to come from the Ghidorah head, it'll be to do with its DNA and in a few films from now.
If they do go with an original new monster to be the mechanised design, I do hope they manage to design something interesting because all the Legendary original monsters so far have been pretty tame and uninspired.
I'm putting bets down on Gigan but, let's be real, we all want it to be Jet Jaguar ;)
