The scene is, in my opinion, one of the best of the entire Godzilla series.  The significance is understandable, yet somehow beyond us.  Its a truly owerful moment in the franchise, as it brings the journey of two very different beings to a close.  Shindo and his dinosaur savior have met again as changed individuals, and both seem to aknowledge this change in their moment together.  The irony of the scene is another key element to its emotional resonance: the dinosaur saved Shindo's life 48 years earlier, allowing Shindo to build his own sucessful business and help to rebuild Japan's economy after world War II.  Now Shindo watches as all the prosperity he helped create is destroyed by the very being that allowed him to do so.  He knows that he will not live, and fully accepts the ironic nature of his fate.  By killing Shindo, Godzilla eliminates any ties to a more innocent past.  But does Godzilla even recognize or remember Shindo, or even care that he has taken his life?  Only Godzilla and Shindo know for sure, and their moment together is as mysterious as the King of the Monsters himself.  Its a scene that nearly makes me cry everytime I see it, even after watching the movie countless times over the last 14 years.  I just watched the film recently and had the same reaction during the scene.  It is tuly a special moment in Godzilla's history.

yes and yes, shindo feels guilty for leaving godzilla to die, and godzilla feels that him leaving him to die is what got him into becoming a monster. but godzilla still finds him the best human and he doesn't really want to kill however he has to, to punish humanity as a whole for turning him to a freak of nature and shindo wanted and would've prefered that as it would restore his honour.

yeah i also agree it was almost similiar to the original gojira 1954 film. It had a dark atmosphere feel to it and like gman2887 said it was more like a disaster film and the score was perfect for it. This is my 3rd favorite film of the series my 2nd of course was godzilla vs. destroyah and the 1st is without a doubt GOJIRA 1954

Yeah Gman , I was just about to mention the score. It was AMZING. I think most G fans are so hung up on Ifukube that they don't tend to give other composers credit but truth betold Akira reuses so many themes in every film that it's pretty much why even hire him and instead pay him royalties for stock scores?

As for 1985 goes I'm torn between it and Biollante as my favorite G film. If you get the actual Japanese version it's even better, much more in depth about themes and politics. My favorites three films are 54, 85, and Biollante because they take a completely unrealistic situation and look at it from every realistic angle.

It's a great scene and the best element is the ambiguity of it all. Does Godzilla remember? Is Shindo asking for death?

look i know some people say that it suked i think its better than all the other series cuz he had alot of anger in him he is the 3rd most op godzilla 04,54 and heisei. 04 is the son cuz the intro of FW ends in that scene with Jr in the dust and it made him the king and 2000 did not have a attiude he has like ha that tickeld and godzilla 1990s was hit and then he got mad because he almost died vs Mecha G its the same with Jr ozaki is like Rodan in FW cuz godzilla almost died and he could not make Kaizer blow up with his blue atomic breath and his hyper spiral ray could blow every thing up. the Heisei has a sequel FW and that is why it good because hesei has 8 movies FW is like a back up plan so you dont feel bad about Jr so hesei is a really good series because he had attiude and millinum did not exept FW and brings alot of new wepons,new monsters and old monsters upgraded and stronger than ever i bet 2000 would not stand a chance vs Space Godzilla,king ghidorha,destroyha i bet he would die 90s put up a fight so hesei is better

also this one scene gives godzilla more characterisation than most of the heisei except the moments leading up to his death like jr's death

can we not have posts like this, even if this is fake, i don't want the movie having a risk of spoilers that also includes pictures or disscusion on the muto monsters.

If it's not the best Heisei movie, it's really quite close. I love how different this movie feels in comparison to most Godzilla movies. It feels more like a disaster movie than a kaiju film. The score is wonderful and very fitting of the mood.

It's a shame this movie is in such a black hole as far as rights issues go. I'd love to have both versions on Bluray...

well it's sort of shindo's fault from 'a certain point of veiw' well to shindo anyway, he feels responsible because he thought he had turned the dinosaur into godzilla when his sub got destoryed, he thought it was a good thing untill after godzilla defeated ghidorah, also godzilla may have blamed shindo because 1. he left him 2. shindo had a nuclear sub and would've turned him to what he is, which is what godzilla doesn't want. 

to help with my point i recomend you watch the review of this movie by youtube channel Zazubaar, he makes great discriptions on the story and any parts that he thinks are very powerful moments

also when i watch that shindo and godzilla seen, i actually have a fear tears, that is how powerful that seen is.

Characterization is great, but if you don't have a strong story to go with it you're splitting hairs. And how was Shindo directly responsible for the Godzillasaurus becoming Godzilla? It was the Futarians that transported him into the ocean where he became Godzilla.

The scene between Godzilla and Shindo is one of the absolute best moments in the Heisei series though. The meaning of the scene can be disected by fans until the end of time, but regardless of its intentions its an emotionally strong moment and one of Kazuki Omori's best directorial efforts in these movies.

Yea I agree it was one of the best of the heisei and I love the tone of the whole movie of how serious it was and how they made him a force of nature that nothing could of stop him or killed him not even goin into a volcano. It was defiantly one of the best of the heisei series  and they should of kept the whole heisei series more of a serious tone the way they did with return of godzilla and vs biollante. But I hope the new one keep that same tone as the return of godzilla and show how powerful he is the same way they did.

you know the more i grow up the more i start appreciating how good the showa series is, the millenium series is just ok. the showa had more original monsters and the mojority were/still are popular.

i think really the reason why the heiesi was so good is because the way godzilla was treated, he was a force of nature twisted by humanity and no is a freak of nature, but he remember who he has met (shindo) and regretfully 'has' to kill him, not because he's godzilla, it's because it's his job, shindo is pretty much the reason the godzillasaurus became godzilla, that is what both godzilla and shindo think and so shindo LETS himself be killed. and godzilla's death are the reasons why the heisei is good, not because of the plots of the humans or the monster, it's because of godzilla as a character.

Best film is Hensei series. Without a doubt

What's great about the original series is how much Americans were involved as well, what I mean is that the films were so good that Hollywood wanted to be involved with the films. Even American actors were found in these films "uh hum Monster Zero"

i kind of agree, the first 2 movies were the best of the heisei, gvskg was good and is one ofmy favourites but it did have 'some' lazy writing and confusing plot holes, battle for earth was bad because 1. godzilla was just there for no story reason 2. the sound effects for the atomic breath sound like a laser beam, mg was good in my opinion cause it shows that godzilla has emotions and baby shows that as well, spacegodzilla was boring, and the only reason why i even like g vs d is because of the emotional ending and the plot surroudning godzilla's death and juniors arrival, destroyah himseldf wasn't that impresive onscreen, to me godzilla looked like he was more powerful even the humans state that destoryah is not match against godzilla.

I think the Millennium series generally has as many problems as the Heisei series, but they're just different problems. Whereas the Heisei series falls flat with the execution of great ideas, the Millennium series tends to have great execution, albiet with ideas that have already been used in the series. I generally put Heisei and Millennium on the same pedistal.

Another thing that torpedoed the Heisei series was the strict continuity. It really had no impact on the overarcing stories, caused plotholes and made it really hard for Toho to sell the movies to overseas distributors. I can understand why the Millennium movies were so disconnected after the experimenting with tight continuity.

The reason the Showa series is so much better than the other two isn't because of the number of movies that are better. Or even because it started everything. It's better because the quality of the good movies outweigh the weak films in its own series and the best films in the other two series.

i love the godzilla 200 design.

i want it to be on consules dont get me wrong i think it is a good idea i just wish there would be like anouther godzilla unleashed game or something for the next gen consules. 

That's pretty close to opening day. I imagine they'll have some interesting new footage or images to entice ppl by then, specifically for this ComiCon. The buzz for the film will be in full swing by then as well, and their aim to keep details under wraps will be much more laxed. It should be very interesting. Plus Dubai is the epitome of 'GO BIG OR GO HOME', so there might be a big spectacle for this film there. Something grand! Lets hope. The previous ComiCon presence for this film has been imaginitive and impressive so far, so I hope that continues.
