So a while ago we found out that what we thought was Titanosaurus was being called “Godzilla Aquatilis” despite it’s design being based on the former monster.

Now it seems that Toho has officially rebranded the other classic monsters...

Gabara is now known as “Salunga”.

Hedorah is now known as “Hanega”.

Its seems that Kumonga and Kamacarus have been merged into one monster known as “Kamanga”.

And Megalon has also been fused with Kumonga and is now known as “Sarunga”.

But at least Anguirus is still the same…

What do you think of the rebrands. Honestly, I’m not sure what to think, I’m glad to see these older monsters returning, but at the same time I’m not a fan of them being rebranded.

From what I’ve heard, Officially it IS meant to be Gabara, however they renamed him Salunga for some reason.

It's probably just for the anime. I wouldn't get too worried. Also, source?

SarcasticGoji,
The source comes from the episode description on Japan's Netflix, so it would be hard to link directly. I'm curious to see how the story approaches this. Nicknames perhaps?

It's definitely a weird choice, although this could explain why their calling Godzilla, "Goshira".

Maybe every classic monster fuses together into a completely different one. That would explain the design changes.

SasquaDash,
I'll have to go back listen to it again, but I'm pretty sure the "Goshira" was a mispronunciation on the character's part.

I heard that the kanji for "Goshira" is used to mean an ancient depiction of Godzilla. Basically it means he's an ancient monster.

I doubt this is a permanent name change. This is Godzilla after all. Most likely a nickname specific to the anime.

I've recently heard some fan theories and rumors that the design and name changes could have something to do with Toho continuing it's contract with Legendary (possibly as a way of differentiating the two series?)

Although this is just speculation, so we should probably take it with a grain of salt...

Many of these kaiju appear to be hybrids with other characters which is probably why they have different names.

And now they've rebranded Varan as Godzilla Amphivia...

I really don't get why Toho's doing this...

THATS NOT VARAN. Rebranding is such a weird term for this. These are new kaiju! Just because they look like old ones doesn’t mean they are. And I see it somewhat, but that’s not Varan, thats Godzilla Amphivia

I heard rumors that Godzilla evolves throughout Singular Point, like Shin Godzilla did. If this is true, then Aqualitis and Amphivia are just stages in Ultima's evolution.

Honestly, they should've just done a design like this:

But that's what I think. We all have our preferences.

Godzilla Ultima is good for the show, Monsterverse design doesn’t work for everything.

I'm not saying that Godzilla Ultima is bad either, he has a pretty cool design.

If they're meant to be new original kaiju, then what's the point of making them look (and in some cases sound) nearly identical to the older kaiju? Why not create a new design, instead of copying an older design? If these are meant to be new kaiju, they could've made them look unique, but instead they look like uninspired (and potentially lazy) knock-offs of more famous kaiju.

Literally the only normal looking one is Anguirus.

homages, and that’s a weird question. They wouldn’t just rebrand OG Kaiju that have already bet established. An the “Kumacaras and Kumonga” just have the coloration. I can’t say much for Salunga, but but most of the kaiju on have resemblance.

correction: most of the kaiju only share certain traits not a whole design for example the varan one

SasquaDash,
Orange and Bones. Not Toho.

KaijuFan_6754,
Why? They're Legendary's designs.

SarcasticGoji,
It's an interesting thing Orange and Bones are doing with this series--Using aspects of other monster designs for something else entirely as an homage to past monsters. The main thing is only the hardcore fans will notice it and anyone new will likely miss it.

I don't think I can recall another franchise that has done something like this. If nothing else, it's a roundabout form of fan service that doesn't stop the story in its tracks, so I'm appreciative of that aspect. Oddly, the Titanosaurus >>> Varan >>> Godzilla evolution is something interesting to think about and not entirely off base. It also adds to the commonality between all these monsters the story may or may not be alluding to. (I don't really want to give anything away.)

I'm fascinated by this approach. It also reminds me I need to watch episode 7.

Yes, but Toho is still involved with overseeing the project, so these choices were made with their approval.

I'm just wondering why they made these "new" kaiju so similar to the old ones if their meant to be something different...

SasquaDash,
Yes, but the deal is no different than the one Toho has with Legendary. If we wonder why Toho is allowing this in Singular Point, we should also lay blame (or praise) at their feet for Legendary's films too. They may have approved aspects for all three studios, but they're not the creative studio behind the Monsterverse or the anime.

And I think it's becoming more obvious why Bones and Orange have done this. Monster designer Eiji Yamamori and the animators are clearly very much fans of the series, but whereas Titanosaurus and Varan wouldn't fit the story (or rather, they have the self-control not to shove them into the story needlessly) they're using design attributes as an homage for something else entirely.

Normally, I'd pin this as "lazy" but, quite frankly... well look at it. It's not exactly a carbon copy of the Titanosaurus or Varan we've seen before.

I never thought the first one looked like Titano other than the coloration.

SarcasticGoji,
I think there were some attributes taken from Titanosaurus--The colors, as you pointed out, and the orange fins around the head and snout. It's almost like Eiji Yamamori really wanted Titanosaurus and Varan to be in the show, so he made Godzilla's forms out to be variations on those designs.

Fuyuki Shinada did something similar when he designed King Ghidorah for GMK. He was so disappointed his Varan design wasn't going to make it in the movie, that he used Varan's face for each of King Ghidorah's heads.

Granted, Yamamori is clearly doing something more explicit that he wants to be noticed.

I think the "Kamacuras-Kumonga hybrid” looks more like an hybrid of Megalon and Gigan. But I have seen leaks that say something very different...
