I far and away prefer the original. And while I like the new soundtrack with Desplat, I wouldn't rank it a 10/10. While I'm happy it goes against the grain of most Zimmer-esque movie scores these days there's a little too much symphonic noise and too little theme variation. It works fantastic for the movie, but there's not a lot there for standalone listens-- unlike many of the other soundtracks.

I prefer many of Ifukube's other scores, particularly Mothra vs. Godzilla, Monster Zero, Terror of MechaGodzilla and his 1990s material. Outside of that Oshima, Otani and some of Sato's work really nailed it. Desplat's a fantastic composer, he just doesn't have the same theme build or repetition that these others had/have.

"'Nostalgic' does not equal 'good,' and 'standards' does not equal 'elitism.'" "Being offended is inevitable. Living offended is your choice."
