MemberMothra LarvaeMay-22-2014 1:45 PMGodzilla was very much a success. It blew every estimate out of the water (remember, original estimates put it at 60 million). It put out super-hero movie numbers on 80% of a super-hero budget. thats before we even get to future blu-Ray/DVD sales. Not to mention toys and other merchandise. Trust me, Legendary is loving the Big Guy right now.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-22-2014 2:19 PMConsidering Legendary has announced a sequel and the film has yet to even reach the Asian market says enough. This film is successful and isn't even halfway finished yet.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-22-2014 2:26 PMPointless. A sequel is already in the works. True G fans raved at the theaters. My own expectations were blown away even though the movie is far from perfect. Numbers. The box office got stomped, everyone claiming the film would flop got stomped, and anyone thinking the second film won't stomp like this one did gets stomped. Basic math. Gareth wins, so he wins...

MemberBaragonMay-22-2014 2:27 PMIt made over $200 million in a week, and still hasn't come out in two markets that I expect it to hit huge in. Yeah to say unsuccessful is kind of a joke.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-22-2014 2:29 PMActually we gotta wait 2 more months cuz it comes out in July for Japan, which means this movie will be a humongous hit by the time it stops playing in theaters with all the overall money it made

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-22-2014 2:53 PMSo a film earning almost ALL OF IT'S BUDGET is unsuccessful. The film costs 160 Million$ and it made 93.2 million$ on IT'S OPENING WEEKEND.

Movies must recoup their budget, plus the marketing and distribution cost. And remember the theatre gets a good percentage, too. So a movie like Godzilla, with a budget of about $160 million, needs to make about $450 million before it breaks even.
The reason why they have already announced a sequel is because the studios have already calculated that Godzilla will bring in about $650-$700 million dollars. Thats' a profit for Legendary and Warner Bros of around $150 million once the theatres take their cut.
So even though it still hasn't made its production cost, it most surely will, and then a lot more.

AdminGodzillaMay-22-2014 6:14 PMThomas Tull already confirmed the movie must make $380 million (worldwide) to break even.

I read where Thomas Tull said that the movie needed to make $450 million to break even. Here is the article: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/legendarys-thomas-tull-talks-godzilla-700348
