Godzilla 1998, despite all it's bad reviews, managed to make almost 400 million dollars (not sure what the converts to today with inflation).

If this film is a success in the eyes of the general audience, and reviews come out good, I believe Godzilla should make at least 500 million worldwide. Don't forget that Pacific Rim was a completly new Kaiju film with no fanbase before it and it pulled in over 400 mil.

Godzilla will certainly make more than Vampire Academy lol That is a for sure thing.

@JOSHUAHOPKINS

I certainly hope you meant 500 to 600 million...not 5 to 6 million.

If the Godzilla movie was to take in that low of a gross, it would be a disaster.

I personallly see around 100-120 million domestic and 300-375 million international.

He's Godzilla, THE KING OF ALL THE MONSTERS! He's had more movies than any other movie character and has been one of the most well-known and influential pop culture characters of all time. He is going to make way more than 6 million. Perhaps he'll make 1954 million. See what I did there. But seriously, this movie will be successful.

@ dannyblazor: that would be amazing, but I think you mau be overreaching a bit. I think 500-550 is more realistic. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see this movie blowing the lid off the box office. 200-250 domestic + 250-300 million over-seas.

Well, I've a feeling this film will do quite nicely. Ergo, I suspect it will gross a very nice cash take - perhaps somewhere between $350 million to $500 million. Then again, I very well could be less than spot-on.

A few months ago, I was nervous that this movie would be hovering around the $300-400 million mark, which wouldn't really justify a sequel. Regardless of marketing, I just didn't think non-Godzilla fans would really want to see the movie.

However, after seeing the trailer views, reading comments on non-Godzilla related websites, and hearing about audience reaction to the pre-screened footage (especially when compared to the lukewarm/slightly above average reactions for footage screened for other films, like Spiderman), I think something in the $500-600 million ballpark is more possible than I originally estimated.

As a side note: Vampire Academy wasn't profitable. But it's hardly "biggest flop of all time" kinda stuff. It's production budget was likely less than $20 million if you compare it to other films in the genre/cast/production quality (I can't actually find any budget numbers so I'm not 100% on that). And I've read the movie made closer to $12 million than $8 million. With marketing costs and everything, the movie definitely still LOST money. But just a few million. Which is more of a slight disappointment, than a huge flop.

@Madison: Yeah, things like "biggest flop of all times" gets you in John Carter territory. Only making 73 million on a 250 million budget, or Lone Ranger with 89 million on a budger of 210 million. These moves lost well over 100 million each. THAT's a catastrophy!

What on earth is Vampire Academy? I've never encountered a filmn by that name. John Carter and the Lone Ranger I've at least heard of in referrence.

Wow, people even make LeBron jokes here on the Godzilla forums too? Wow. Anyway I started a discussion on this not long but anyway...my prediction is around $180, 000, 000. If Pacific Rim made $100, 000, 000 then I'm sure Godzilla would do better. If Godzilla made $5, 000, 000 then that would be a big fail for such a big-budget film. But yeah, I would say $180 mil.

I agree with most of the general numbers posted, but just remember one thing: critical reviews do not necessarily make or break a film. There have been movies that were roundly panned by film critics that did big box office with the public. Way back in the day, the original version of the Poseidon Adventure (not the Kurt Russel remake, which sucked) was universally trashed by most critics. It went on to be one of the highest-grossing films of that year, and spawned the 'disaster flick' genre, which went on for years afterward.

Also, as some members pointed out, the 1998 Zilla movie, which was slammed by most of the general movie-going public, did very good at the box office.

I'm leaning towards a box office success for this film, just going by the tack and tone that Gareth Edwards is taking on it, and the fact that it's about an iconic movie character that has instant name recognition.

Like everything else, we'll just have to wait and see...
