Why advertisements can be a bad thing...

I'm no means a professional movie critic or nor am I a person who is into marketing, but from what I've seen over the years with my movie experiences is that a lot of advertising can be a really bad thing.
Almost 90% of movies that had HUGE advertising and constant TV spots and merchandizing turned out to be bad or "so-so" movies. Take for example the Hulk movie in 2003, you couldn't go anywhere with something that had to do with the Hulk, even green chocolate syrup! Even Godzilla 1998 (Zilla) had one the largest marketing programs for a movie ever, the movie ended up being total crap. The Star Wars prequels were even boomers for advertising and let's be honest they're no where near on par with the original trilogy.
Not saying that G2014 is gonna to be a bad film, but even the constant different variations of TV spots keeps appearing after ever commercial break for a show is not looking good, at least on my experience. BUT I still have faith that this film will be great, just hope I'm wrong. Thoughts?
