MemberMothra LarvaeMar-03-2014 2:12 PMLike the title says, I'm new to these discussions/threads. I've been lurking for the past few months, and just wanted to give my thoughts on the new Godzilla movie.
I'm loving it. The cast seems phenomenal. I love the darker tone that's more reminiscent of the original '54 Godzilla, as well as the nods to that movie. And I'm really liking the updated design for the King of Monsters. Well, except the...
Gills. It's nice that they aren't too noticeable unless you are really looking for them, but when you do see them, they seem so out of place, especially on a gigantic reptile. I don't think it was really necessary to explain how he can breathe underwater. In fact, I don't see why he even has to breathe underwater. It would have been a much better explanation, in my opinion, if it was explained that he could hold his breath for hours, like a whale. His name does come partly from the Japanese word for whale, after all.
The designs for the MUTOs also disappoint me. Don't get me wrong, they aren't God awful or anything. It's just that with all the great designs of monsters from the Godzilla series, why go with a slightly altered copy of the Cloverfield monster? When I watched the trailer and saw this...
...I seriously thought it was going to be an updated version of this...
Unfortunately, it seems to just be this guy's arm...
...is Rodan. Then, all is forgiven. :-D IGN did say that something they guessed in their Trailer Rewind was correct, so I'm hoping that this is what they were talking about. I know some have suggested that this creature is the same as the toy MUTO, but I just don't see it. The one above has shorter legs than the toy. Some have said the toy MUTO could have wings that fold into/against his arms, which I agree could be the case, but judging by the toy, they don't seem to run the whole length of his arms. The wings in the picture above are also missing an arm to be attached to, which you would see given how long the MUTOs arms are, as well as the claw at the end of the MUTO's arm. To me, the above pictures just scream...
Anyway, minor flaws aside, I am very much looking forward to this movie. It's nice to see Godzilla back in all his glory.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-03-2014 2:14 PMAlso, quick question. I kept trying to post with the actual images in the OP. Anybody have a clue why it wouldn't let me post it like that?

There's a button located beneath "format" that's the "Insert/edit image" option. Once you click it a small window will pop up where you can paste the image link in and hit ok. The image will appear in your post.

Thanks for the welcome.
And, I did try that, but when I hit start discussion, it just said I needed to log in, again, even though I already was. Then, when I logged in again, it just said "error:you are already logged in." Anyway, I'll try and edit it, now, and see if it works.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-03-2014 2:47 PMHi, and welcome to the forums!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the flying muto isn't Rodan. Godzilla has been confirmed as the only Toho-IP monster in this movie. I wouldn't be surprised if elements of it were an homage to Rodan, though!

I have heard this over and over, but is there an actual link you can post where this is confirmed to not be true?

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-03-2014 3:33 PMGareth Edwards confirmed in the new Empire Magazine that Mutos are NOT classic Toho monsters.
We can also use our common sense. Why would they change Rodan's color? You can clearly see in one scene that the flying Muto is white.

I reread the scans from that magazine, and it seems to me he was talking specifically about the monster that was attacking Godzilla in the scene Empire was watching be filmed. Also, the flying monster doesn't look white to me, especially in that top pic. Not that color matters, seeing as Godzilla isn't the same exact color, either, and now (according to the toys) has a much lighter colored underbelly. Not saying it is definite he is in the movie, just that what you said doesn't completely refute it. Besides, a man can dream, can't he. :-D
