^Not on its own, no.  The closest you will get is a Double Feature DVD with Mothra II.  Its lame and only has the dubs, so get the Blu-ray that came out yesterday!

Wait... did you mean the original 1961 Mothra?  If thats the case, then you're still out of luck.  Its on DVD from Sony only with Battle in Outer Space and The H-Man in the same package.  That is definitely the version to get, as it has the best quality and the other movies are great, as well! :) The only other DVD version out there is the recent MIll Creek set with The Giant Claw, 20 Million Miles to Earth, and It Came From Benieth the Sea also included.  Stay clear of that one, as I have heard that the video and audio quality sucks from all the compression on the disk, something Mill Creek is notorious for.

I think the only time the original Mothra was released on its own was on VHS through Sony. I can't recall if that version was released on DVD, but if it was it's long since out-of-print.

I highly recommend the Toho Triple feature with Mothra, Battle in Outer Space and The H-Man. It's a really incredible set of movies and pretty dirt cheap.

^Seconded.  The other two movies are classics and really awesome to add to your collection, and you can get that set for super super cheap.

Is on Amason for $10.34...

Love that Icons of Toho 3DVD set too! The only let down is the packaging. We will need separate cases for the other two discs, to avoid scratches.
All legends are involved there... Ishiro Honda, Eiji Tsuburaya, Akira Ifukube, Kenji Sahara, Akira Takarada, Hiroshi Koizumi, etc. Too bad that these films are only available as blu ray in Japan only, for now. I don't mind buying them again if Sony ever released these films on blu ray in US.

^That may be coming sooner than we think!  Those three fims are the only (I believe) three films Sony has not upgraded yet, and they just gave Rebirth of Mothra III, which they have had the rights to reliese since 1998 but never did, a Blu-ray release alongside its two prequels!  I bet we seen The H-Man, Battle in Outer Space, and Mothra get Blu-rays next year! :) I'll do some digging to see what other films Sony may have the rights to!

Here's a little somethin'...

This is an excerpt from a Toho Kingdom interview conducted by Anthony Romero with Barrett Evens of Mill Creek Entertainment, who partnered with Sony recently, resulting in their recent Mothra release...

Romero: Mothra was previously released by Mill Creek Entertainment as part of the Sci-Fi Creatures Classics set. Any chance there might be a Blu-ray release of the 1961 film down the road?

Evans: We are exploring the possibility, but no definitive plans yet.

Intriguing!

Here's the full interview, if anyone is interested:

Danzilla,

Fantastic find! I remember hearing about that, but never knew the source. Fans need to let Sony know there's a market for these films on Bluray. It's the only way we'll get them.

Thanks Gman! :)

And Amen to that!  If we want it, we need to let the people with the power know that there are consumers ready to shell out the money for these things.  When it comes to niche genres, thats really the only way things like this happen these days.

On a side not for those who didn't read the whole interview, here is another interesting tidbit:

Romero: The current Toho property releases from Mill Creek Entertainment were done through Sony's library of titles, but is there any chance that a future agreement direct with the Japanese film company might happen in a similar fashion to the one with Kadokawa for the Gamera and Daimajin titles? While many of the company's properties for the kaiju titles have already seen a DVD release in the states, there are still a couple that have been skimmed over, such as the 1973 Zone Fighter TV series that featured Godzilla.

Evans: Great ideas and are all under consideration.

Could be BS, but we can pray, right? :)

I'm calling BS on it, but we can hope. I'd love for Zone Fighter to be released here. However, it seems most Toku television gets the snub in the States. Much of the Ultraman series has still yet to hit North America. (Of course much of that is due to the insane liscense war between Tsuburaya and Sompote-- One I doubt will ever be resolved...) There's literally no need for Super Sentai due to Power Rangers, so I'm in utter shock Zyuranger is being released soon. Surely, that's being made available to test the waters for other Sentai.

Spectreman, Megaloman, Spider-Man, Kikaider...etc... It's a shame so many have still yet to hit North America. Officially anyway.

Thanks to all who answered my Mothra question. I was asking about the original 60's Mothra. I found and ordered the one you guys recomended. I have a freakin sweet bootleg of it. I dispise the idea of buying bootlegs but sadly it's sometimes the only option. I got a awsome boot of The Return Of Godzilla that rivals a sony dvd in quality that came with the Japanese AND US version. Funny story, When my niece was just 4 years old, I got her hooked on Godzilla and my brother hated him. One night he put the Matthew Broderick POS in (At the time a new release) and about half way through she tells him to stop it. "I like the guy in the suit ones" she tells him. SCHOOLED!!! LMAO

^ HAHA, I ilterally just saw that on Scifi Japan!  That was epic!  The movies do look darn good in hi def!  I'm especially pumped about Mothra III... all I've had up till now was a Japanese VHS of that movie.  It was subtitled acurately, but the picture quality wasn't great.  I love the Mothra Trilogy so much, so this release really hits home for me.  And Godzilla 2000... that was my first Godzilla film, and its one of the few movies that I can say I love the Japanese cut and the American cut equally!  I love both, and I can't wait to se how both look in hi def! :D

It's been awhile since I've watched the Japanese version of Godzilla 2000, so I'm looking forward to it. Aside of the deleted scenes in the American cut, I miss the blue tinted color correction of the Japanese version. Made it feel more cinematic.

^Good observation!  I love the Japanese version, and I am always struck by how comparitively quiet it is, when one takes the reworked soundtrack and sound effects of the American cut into account.  Each version has its strengths and weaknesses, and one day someone will combine them to create and "Ultimate Edition" of sorts. :)

I'm not proud of myself, but I picked up the bootleg DVD of The Return of Godzilla on Amazon. I'm tired of having to go to MetaCafe to watch the far superior Japanese cut on a computer. It doesn't seem like The Return of Godzilla will be released stateside on DVD anytime soon, and I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet so a potential future Blu-Ray release won't benefit me much.

@The King of the Monsters:

I hear ya there.  The legal web of ridiculousness  surrounding that film is mind bloating, so bootlegs, sadly, are the way to go.  I've had my copy of the Japanese version, accurately subtitled and packed with bonus features, for many years now, and it has served me well.  It wasn't what I wanted to do, but I needed to see that movie in its original version.

@Super Godzilla:

Good purchses!  I've got my Metalpak coming in a few days, and I'm waiting for my Kickstarter rewards for the Ifukube concert and Kyle Yount's upcoming Godzilla documentary, plus SHMA Godzilla 2014 and the two upcoming effects/weapons packs, and Godzilla vs Megalon on Blu-ray, which should be here today!

Yeah, I check my mailbox often...

@Nextgojiraking93:

Now that there is an AWESOME cover?  I'mpretty sure I know the answer here, but there aren't any exclusive features on that version, right?

The walmart exclusive Godzilla 2014 will be the standard edition but it won't have the bonus feature Rebirth of an Icon. Also what's weird on Bluray.com is that Godzilla 2014 has gotten a good review for it's Video and Audio Quality. here the link for the review.http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Godzilla-Blu-ray/78769/

There's definitely a difference here, and its pretty drastic.  I still cant wait to get mine tomorrow! :D

Very disappointing to hear that the darkness on the Bluray isn't just something that's being blown out proportion and resolves itself on the television.

The thing is the digital elements for the theatrical release couldn't have been altered for Bluray/DVD unless it was done so on purpose. So for whatever reason this was a conscious decision... How awful... Seems that the only way fans of the film are going to see it as it was originally released is to replay the theatrical experience in their heads.

Alright, so I just got the target exclusive Blu-Ray and took a quick peak at the battle/night scenes.

I must say, there's nothing particularly wrong with them. They are a bit darker than the Blu-Ray screencaps released a while back, but they're much brighter than the Digital release. You can definitely see the battle in full detail; that part is certain.

What I'm kind of upset about is the lack of 'flare' in the menu system (although it is a minor complaint). I mean, with most Blu-Ray releases, you get a cool menu set up with creative ways of displaying the features. Here, its just a stand alond image with the options slapped across the bottom. They didn't even name their chapters (again, though, minor complaint).

But hey, I'm pretty sure the extended release would be more appealing (if we ever get it). All in all, the current Blu-Ray release is just fine.

The Blu-ray is terrible! It' so dark you can barley make out whats happening. I had to adjust my TV settings, or else it would have been a black blob of nothing on the screen. I was really looking forward to seeing it on Blu-ray because in the theatrical 3-D screening, I felt the action was pretty hard to follow. What a let down. In what other case does Blu-ray make something look like crap!? I don't get it...It's like this movie goes out of it's way for you to not want to see anything that's happening in it. I'm going to try the DVD today. Maybe that will be better.

Thankfully when I watched Godzilla on DVD yesterday, I was able to crank up the brightness on my TV to the point that everything was properly visible. Unfortunately not everyone has the luxury of a TV with really high brightness settings.

On other DVD/Bluray issues, the dubtitles are pretty awful on the Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack / Godzilla against MechaGodzilla release. In addition to those problems, Godzilla against MechaGodzilla features the trailer from Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II.

Sony was pretty sloppy with that one...

For those who want to let Sony know here's the email to try and get them to correct these issues. Please be civil:

consumer@SPHECustomerSupport.sony.com

It's unlikely they'll do anything about it, but nothing will happen if no one does anything about it.

UPDATES: I added the Wal-Mart cover to Godzilla '14 and fixed the covers for Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Megalon. All of the recent releases are now titled as "released!"

I also fixed the current Amazon prices for each release.

Finally I added the Gamera: Showa and Heisei Collection to the list. It will be available November 11th. I don't have the Amazon link just yet. If someone wants to hunt it down for me I'll put it up there.

The Gamera release is nothing more than all of Mill Creeks Blurays in a single box set. So unless you don't have these films, the set is usless.

The Gamera set is really unnecessary. They just released them on Blu a few months back in two nice sets and a third with the newer trilogy. Also it's missing Gamera the brave. Are they going to be any different? Might be worth it if the trilogy was remastered, they looked a little grainy in the pack I got in the bargin bin at wally world.

No, the Gamera set is the exact same discs Mill Creek has put out before. Just in a new box set. If you already have the movies you don't need this set.

Otherwise, it'll be nice for those who haven't been able to pick them up to get every disc in a single release.
