MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 5:53 PMWell I have to appologize for my latest post I did like what, last week or two weeks ago, idk I forgot, but no time to say why I really did that, I'll tell you all next time why I was being such a d!ck.
But for now, lets talk about the marketing; we all assume that marketing will maybe be starting now since there's a new fantastic poster released, but we also been complaining that they're marketing too late. I do kind of have to agree with that, but this is my opinion ok? Take a look at these;
So I pull out my favorite snack, Cheez-Its out of my grocery bag that my mom just got, and I see this -.- so im not hating on this movie, more like looking forward to it, but please tell me, why is the Amazing Spiderman 2 being aded onto my favorite snack??
Warner Bros u gotta be kidding me, and we all know Spiderman 2 has probably even started a few marketing in the past months already. But wait, thats not all, look what I found on the back side of the box:
Yes, a game, but if u didnt know, my problem is clearly that putting ads of a movie on snacks actually do make people to be more noticed of the movie. So why isnt Godzilla on a snack yet? Shouldnt Legendary want Godzilla to be more noticed to America? Im not done with the Cheez-Its yet, look what I found inside:
And sorry if im making it look too much like a spiderman discussion lol im not, but when I saw this, I wasnt amazed, I was disapointed to see another movie that is releasing close to Godzilla to be an ad on my favorite snack.
Ik all of you wont agree with me on this, but my point is that Warner Bros kinda does have to start marketing now, and you know, do something like this, put an ad of Godzilla onto this snack or another or others.
So do u guys agree? That Warner Bros need to start marketing VERY soon? And that they should do something like this?

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 6:53 PMI'd rather have an awesome poster and scary trailers, than Godzilla Gummy snacks.

AdminGodzillaFeb-20-2014 7:05 PMWe get the best, most detailed poster of the film yet and people are still complaining on the same day? Seriously?
"Oh, no! Godzilla doesn't have his own crackers! The sky is falling!"

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 7:15 PMi agree with tevin. even if we did get a poster this is a good way to market the film even further. not saying im ungrateful im just saying it could help the movie even more

AdminGodzillaFeb-20-2014 7:21 PMHas it occured to any of you that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might be pushing its marketing so hard because Sony thinks they have a dud on their hands?
GINO in 1998 had another $10 million added to its marketing in the final weeks because Sony knew word of mouth would hurt it. Warner Brothers threw $30 million in marketing for Green Lantern because they knew they had a dud on their hands and wanted to try and beat the early reviews. There's a thing called panic marketing and it still happens today.
What I see out of Godzilla is confidence. Collect and cool. Doesn't mean we get a lot immediately, but boo-hoo. Some of this complaining is just an excuse that we haven't seen more of the movie and the rest is needless worry. Let Spider-Man do it's thing. Godzilla comes two weeks after it. The hype for Spidey will have died by the time it comes out.
You know what WB and Legendary need to do for the Godzilla marketing? Ignore fans. Ignore what they say and ignore their whining. All the majority is doing is whining anyway, but why should they cater to us right now? We're going to see the movie regardless. They'll reach who they need to reach when the time is right.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 7:23 PMMost of you seem to be missing the point, though to be fair it's not very clearly stated. The fact of the matter is, Marvel need only put its NAME on a movie, and you can be guaranteed that that movie will at least make its money back on Marvel's fanbase alone. This is because most of western culture has fallen in love with the superhero movie. ESPECIALLY with the advent of Marvel's very successful and well done movie franchises. Hell, both Spiderman and X-men could go WITHOUT advertising, and be guaranteed sellers.
Godzilla, however, is not so ingrained in the popular mindset. To be sure, most people know the name, but most people also think of it as childish, cheesy, or just plain b-movie schlock. This isn't what it is, and in my opinion something that is has never been, but it's the viewpoint held by most people here in the west. As I've said before, Godzilla is known, but he is not respected.
If Legendary wants to make their money back AND some profit, then they're going to have to either A: Make ONE HELL OF A GODDAMN OBJECTIVELY GOOD MOVIE. (which I am hoping for, by the way) Or, B: Increase the advertising and tone-setting throughout the country so that everyone knows this isn't anything even remotely like the showa-era fun-times. They would know that this is the King's return to serious storytelling, and that it's going to be one hell of a return.

AdminGodzillaFeb-20-2014 7:27 PM^Oh yes. Nothing screams "serious storytelling" like slapping Godzilla's name on a cracker box.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 7:30 PMGuys, no matter how much you complain, the marketing is not going to change.
We have a Godzilla movie, we're getting a trailer soon, and we are also getting awesome figures. Let's be grateful for what we have. :)

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 7:31 PMThat's not the point I'm making, nor the point I think the OP is trying to make. It's not about putting his name on cracker boxes, or cereal boxes, or any other moronic item you may think to place it on.
It's about spreading the word and getting the public's attention. I have confidence that the movie will be good enough to do that on its own. However, given a good amount of marketing, it could go far and beyond that and become an absolute monster of a movie, breaking records in sales. This would likely guarantee sequels, something which I'm sure we all would love.
Further, it might even wash the bad taste of 98' from the public's mouths, and bring a whole new wave of Godzilla love here in the states.
EDIT: @Daikaiju_Danielle: That's very true, and I can't wait to buy the large figure when it comes out. I'm just saying there is a valid point to be made about the marketing.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 8:26 PMI've explained some of these things in another thread, so I won't rehash them in huge detail here, but basically, HazzardKitsune, the very reason you talk about (Godzilla not being well known or respected in the U.S.) is the very reason WB/Legendary CANNOT afford to do a lot of marketing.
There is panic marketing true, like GMAN2887 talks about, but that's more the exception than the rule. Usually, if a movie studio is cautious about how well a movie is going to do, they DO NOT want to spend tens upon millions marketing the movie because it's risky.
Spiderman is a guaranteed sell. X-Men is a guaranteed sell. So they can afford to market heavy because they KNOW they will get that money back. WB/Legendary really don't know how much Godzilla will return in for them, so they can't afford to market heavily/indiscrimantly.
This is not to say that Godzilla shouldn't be marketed....because it should be. But the marketing needs to be surgical, not a full court press. They shouldn't be paying to shove Godzilla into every household, it's too risky. Rather put strong marketing into your more 'sure-fire' bets, and really focus on those (like Comic-Con).
Last but not least....possible pessimistic downer theory....but potentially sad truth: WB/Legendary may have sacrificed Godzilla to leverage some of their other films. A lot of behind the scenes negotiations goes on between studios as they collaborate over precise release dates for their films. They each want their best money makers to have as little competition as possible. They obviously want all of their films to make money, but some films are simply more important than others for the studios.
So as a hypothetical example, WB might agree NOT to compete heavily against Sony's Spiderman, in exchange for Sony not giving much competition in/around The Hobbit release date, or some other type of similar arrangement.
I'm not saying I have any sources, or know for 100% certain that this is going on. But it might be possible that WB/Legendary are pulling their punches on Godzilla in exchange for similar favors for another movie.
Lol, who knows, maybe Legendary could go all Playstation, like how they backed out of DRM policies, making XBoxOne peeps look like fools after they MOST LIKELY agreed to cooperate on that issue........and market the hell out of Godzilla anyway even after they agreed not to :-)
I dunno, just thoughts.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 9:24 PMThey should've release godzilla trailer during the super bowl, it was biggest viewers in the super bowl history with 115 million people watching. I'm surprise theye didn't. the movie will be out in 2 months, so far one trailler and one movie poster. they says it cost them to make a new godzilla film, $160 million dollars. I hope they will earn more than $160 million dollars. Look at John Carter, they did awful job at marketing and they didn't earn a lot of money in the box office.

Chris
AdminSpaceGodzillaFeb-20-2014 10:36 PMI'm baffled anyone can still complain after the badass poster they released today. Honestly, have some faith and stop bitching. I'm not saying that to be rude, I'm saying that in hopes that it will force you (and anyone else complaining) to give your heads a shake. The marketing is just heating up, sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-20-2014 10:45 PMI agree with Chris, once the trailer hits no one will be complaining anymore. Plus you don't eat Godzilla crackers, Godzilla crackers eat you.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-21-2014 8:09 AM@WRSMOV: To be fair, John Carter was also not that good.
@MADISON: Hmmm, that's actually a viewpoint I hadn't thought about. I can see your point, though I certainly hope that that isn't the case.
@Chris: I can only hope so.
