A misleading poster indeed. Looks like Legendary hasn't learnt. They really ought to stop marketing it in such a way as if Godzilla is going to terrorize mankind when this didn't even happen to begin with. It's like advertising a car telling people how great it looks and the wonderful features it comes with, only to visit the showroom and you don't even get what you see. And that's a wrong marketing tactic, which leaves a bitter aftertaste.
No wonder sales in the box office are slumping faster than expected in the US and overseas too. This chinese poster's liner says ' The King has returned' - which is rather irrelevant. As an Asian myself, I along with many others grew up watching Godzilla terrorize mankind and evoke more fear to mankind than the adversaries of Godzilla himself, and suddenly this movie turns Godzilla into a Gamera of sorts and doesn't even deliver the punch whenever the scene calls for it. Certainly not what Asian audiences are expecting. Cloverfield is more terrifying to watch in comparison. Even at home here in Singapore, in just two weeks Godzilla has dropped from #1 in the box office to #7 at present and the last weekend between 5-8th June, sales was down to just $41,000, and Godzilla has been reduced to a B-grade movie slot with only 2 time slots per day in every cinema. I'm totally shocked.
During the debut of the movie, I could see lots of negative remarks coming from my FB friends in Hong Kong, Philippines and Malaysia, and basically to sum it up - They felt cheated. Unless the Chinese are going to react much differently from the rest of the Asians, Godzilla will need to generate at least $100 million from China alone in order to breach $500 million in combined sales. If Legendary continues with this sort of marketing, they can be sure the Chinese will be more aggressive when they criticize this movie on social media.
I am disapppointed because this Godzilla 2014 had all the right ingredients and effects to become a huge-blockbuster generating over $700-800 million in sales. I so much hoped this was the case but right now we are just looking at a modest $500 - $570 million estimate in combined sales in the end. Even right now X-men Days of Future Past, despite opening one week later had already reached $618 million in sales. I blame it on the marketing and the style of direction.
If there's anything I hope Legendary would change, its the change of director for the sequel. If they are sticking to Gareth Edwards, they can be sure the next movie will not even make as much as this current movie cause audiences already know what to expect from this Director. And get rid of that misleading marketing - its harming the movie's prospects rather than helping.
