What about darth vader? Or Alien?

Plus Godzilla only gets around the same amount of screen time of screen time consistently across the MV films.

I dont get this complaint bc even in the original it still takes a while for Goji to show up and when he does he doesnt stay, and we get short scenes with goji.

Plus Goji gets less screen time in the OG than 2014!!!

It is very rare that Godzilla gets over 20 minutes in any of his movies released so far.  Most lf the movies range from 9-15 minutes of gojis total screentime.

G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumShin Ultraman [Japanese] Box Office Watch (03/11/2023)

UPDATE 05/16/2022:
Kogyotsushin, via World of KJ, confirms Shin Ultraman's numbers from the original post are accurate! The movie has opened with a staggering $7.7 Million three day opening. ($5.5 Million Sat/Sun opening weekend.) It currently sits at an attendance of 641,802 and should hit 1 million next weekend.

Shin Ultraman is Japan's biggest May opening in 11 years. It has beaten out The Superior 8 Ultra Brothers as the top grossing/attended Ultraman film of all time. And it is the 3rd biggest opening for a kaiju/giant monster film in the last 10 years behind Shin Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Additionally, Shin Ultraman is the 5th biggest opening of the year and at its opening sits as the 17th highest grossing 2022 film in Japan.

Box office pundits and specialists think it might hit the $40 Million mark, which would make it the biggest May release in 10 years. We'll see how the movie holds next weekend.

Also, trying to repeat the success of the MCU already brought back horrendous results when it comes to stuff like the DCEU, Sony's Spider-Verse, and The Dark Universe.

We need to get back to serious on the MonsterVerse.  And the sillier tone is wasting frankly spectacular actors and actresses who are somehow brought in (like Millie Bobby Brown, Ken Watanabe, etc.)

Hands down my least favorite.  Can't call it Godzilla when the title character shows up A FULL HOUR INTO THE MOVIE.

2014's tone worked for setting up the series, but I feel that there's only so much they could do with the realistic/grounded tone in a series like this. I feel like they would've needed to bring in the the more out there sci-fi/fantasy tone eventually, especially when you bring in characters like Mothra, Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla. I do hope that the upcoming Apple TV series brings back a somewhat more serious like 2014 though.

@SasquaDash:

Definitely. Because of how different the tone of the MonsterVerse is right now, I also think that people shouldn’t get their hopes up about seeing Gareth Edwards come back to direct another movie. The tone he established in the first movie wouldn’t work at this point in the MonsterVerse.

But even KSI has a darker tone, granted that may be just due to more human violence and death in that move than other MV movies, but it feels like now MV is trying to replicate the MCUs tone

Yeah, for the most part the general audiences and some critics thought that Godzilla 2014 took itself "too seriously" (even though the original was extremely serious), which probably had to do with the fact that the genre isn't as respected as it should be and the fact that Pacific Rim kind of set a standard for big Hollywood Kaiju movies. The general audience responded better to the more crazy action movie tone that Kong: Skull Island had, which resulted in the rest of the MonsterVerse having that tone.

I think you have really nailed it. While I do miss the more serious tone, lightening was definitely the logical decision.

7 for me. Was extremely fun and had some of the best visuals I've ever seen. If it had KotM music score it would be close to an 8. I just like Ghidorah as a better villain than the subpar vengeance plot idea.

The monster nesting idea definitely worked better with the MUTOs.

I feel like 98 had a pretty strong opening, the scenes where Zilla attacks the fishing boats and his arrival in New York are actually pretty well done, the movie starts to fall apart when he's fully revealed and you realize that it's not really Godzilla.

SasquaDash,
It fits Alien more. Not that it couldn't be transplanted into the Godzilla series. Godzilla '14 sorta brushed on it a bit.

Narratively though, the 1998 movie had a good thing going for the first act as it replayed a lot of the same, paranoid beats as the 1954 film--fishing boats being lost and the terrifying mystery of what's attacking seaworthy vessels. The movie just falls apart once the setting shifts to New York, then the 1990s blockbuster cliches take over.

G. H. (Gman)

I think the 1998 film has some interesting concepts. The idea of a giant monster using a city to nest and the threat that its offspring could proliferate out of control to the point where they could replace humanity as the dominant species is a pretty cool concept, it just didn't really fit Godzilla.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla is the only movie I think the 98 flick has a leg up on.

Others that flirt with the same kind of resilience against critical thinking include Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla x Megaguirus, Godzilla Final Wars, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong--But despite the poor quality of those titles, I can't say they're necessarily void of the irreverence and lackluster, creative output of Emmerich's movie.

As far as Godzilla movies go, I would say that All Monsters Attack, City on the Edge of Battle, and The Planet Eater are the worst (in my opinion).

All Monsters Attack has a really irritating main character (Ichiro is pretty much the definition of an annoying kid character) and the movie comes off as kind of lazy due to the fact that 95% of the monster scenes are made up of stock footage from previous (and in some cases, better) Godzilla films, the most notable thing in it was the fight with Gabara, but even then it's one of the weaker monster battles in the series.

City on the Edge of Battle had one of the worst cases of false advertisement, the film was heavily marketed as a Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla movie, which never happened. Instead, the movie ended up having a really ridiculous plot point of Mechgodzilla turning itself into a city (because that makes sense). As dumb as the whole "Mechagodzilla City" idea was though, they could've done something unique and creative with it, but they didn't. Most of the final battle pretty much being a rehash of the one from Planet of the Monsters and for the most part the movie was just really boring in my opinion.

The Planet Eater managed to do something I didn't think was possible, it made a fight between Godzilla and King Ghidorah boring, if you could even call it a fight (I've never seen a monster fight try that hard to be boring). Most of the film's plot comes off as borderline pretentious, with it trying to act as if it's the most profound thing ever, while also saying some insanely stupid things (there's seriously a moment where they try to get existential about soup), the characters were either bland or annoying and it also rehashed plot points from City on the Edge of Battle (the "aliens turn out to be evil and betray the humans" plot could have been mildly shocking if they hadn't already used it in the previous movie). Honestly, this was one of the only times that I was genuinely annoyed after watching a Godzilla movie...

I wouldnt say any goji films are worse purely for the reason i wouldnt consider 98' a goji film.

I think they could potentially show a brief moment where Monarch is tracking him as a way of updating the audience of his whereabouts and giving a summary of what he's been doing since the events of GvK.

I dont see any reason for Goji to show up at all. Maybe like stock footage like the ones used in KoTM

Reply
SasquaDashGodzilla ForumThe Confusing Reports Regarding The Next MonsterVerse Movie

The movie might primarily focus on Kong, however Godzilla could make a small appearance for potential world building. If it's focused on Kong and takes place after GvK, then I assume that Kong's battle with Godzilla would be brought up in some way.

I know...but Team Kong just needs to stay put.  Also if it turns out to be a team-up, Wingard being included does not have me hopeful about GVK's success being repeated.

I honestly think its just set after GvK and is a Kong film. I mean ive never heard anything saying godzilla is for sure in it.

Also dont worry about the cast, this is completely normal for upcoming movies. We dont learn the whole cast as one.
