^ That's another strength of WotG: just how horrific and frightening Gaira is. He's like a colossal boogeyman, and something that is sure to stick with younger viewers. What's remarkable is how the film introduces such a horrifying creature, then even humanizes him to an extent through his interactions with Sanda. For a villainous monster whose primary purpose is to be scary and mean, he sure gets quite a bit of character exploration.
From a purely entertainment standpoint, it's WOTG for me. FCTW dragged in parts. And something else that few people seem to mention; it's scary as all hell. In fact, one of the few truly scary kaiju movies. Gaila doesn't ignore you if he sees you! He's hunting you.
It took me a long time to see Frankenstein vs. Baragon, so I was always sort of predisposed to War of the Gargantuas, since I first saw that film when I was fairly young. Nowadays I kind of view the films equally, I think the Cain and Abel dynamic between Sanda and Gaira, as well as the fantastic portrayal of the two beasts, are the greatest strengths of WotG, while FvB has in my opinion a better human element and doesn't really feel like a retread of anything done beforehand.
Honestly, I think it's kind of a shame that while WotG is often regarded as a masterpiece, FvB gets dismissed as simply a bizarre off-the-wall campy monster film deserving of ridicule. Yes the premise sounds quite strange on paper, but Ishiro Honda crafts it into a very strong entry in Toho's canon of mid-1960's kaiju eiga.
Neat story! Your knowledge of Godzilla is quite expansive ;)
Keep writing!
That moment when no one has read your new story and you're the only one replying to the thread
Well Chapter Two is probably one of the longest chapters in the entire series.
I like War of the Gargantuas and I can sort of see why it has stuck with people, but I can't give it the edge over Frankenstein. I agree with Honda that it just doesn't have a whole lot there outside of Tsuburaya's stuff. It's a great Tsuburaya movie, but not a very good Honda film. Whereas I think Frankenstein is a great effort from both.
Having recently re-watched these two pretty much back to back, nothing has really changed in my opinion of them. Both a quasi-sequel, quasi-remake, WOTG is still the better movie of the two. For me the only thing I'd give to FCTW is it's far superior male lead. Other than that, WOTG any day of the week.
Dupr004- I didn't think about that until now.
@Durp004 Very likley
^DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNN
There's a throwaway line in Kong Skull Island where there's a line similar to "Monarch is the biggest waste of money since the search for alien life."
Could be totally throwaway, but speaking of alien life.....Ghidorah?
I love your ideas that you got going here! I love the idea of cults "worshipping" these monsters. I love the idea of them being "Gods".
Rodan was worshipped as the God of Rain, Mothra was viewed as the God of Peace, Godzilla was the powerful deity that became the God of Power, and Ghidorah caused nothing but death, and is prophesized to be the God of Destruction.
It would be awesome for Monarch to discuss how each of these 4 creatures have their own cult which worships them, including them predicting when Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan will rise again.
My theory is that King Ghidorah arrived on Earth millions of years ago to end life on the planet, but was narrowly halted by Godzilla with help from other kaiju. Godzilla thought he had killed Ghidorah, but he survived and went into hibernation. In the present day, Mothra, just like Rodan and Godzilla is the last of her kind and hasn't come out of her cocoon yet, but will later on in the movie. Rodan came from the era as Godzilla and has been hibernating ever since. He is awoken by a massive earthquake near the area he was hibernating. King Ghidorah having recovered from his previous battle with Godzilla, wakes up seeks out Godzilla in revenge.
I would agree her material largely depends on the script--But I do think she has the talent to carry a film on her own, based on both Stranger Things and other smaller projects I've seen her in.
However, in order for her to take a central role the script needs to be fairly strong. So far the Monsterverse's biggest issues reside in an iron clad screenplay. I hope Dougherty is able to fix this problem and if he does I'm confident Brown could be a powerhouse. If he doesn't... well... Then I guess we continue the trend of a cinematic Monsterverse that's entertaining, but largely uneven.
I don't know that I have the confidence in Millie Bobby Brown to be a main centerpoint and carry the film. Her only notable work is Stranger Things, and I think there's a different dynamic to playing a part in an episode based show with multiple characters where she isn't always expected to be the focal piece as opposed to roughly 2 hours of following her. This is also assuming the script is good. Is she an actor that can make bad lines work and just make you like the character because of subtle nuance things? To Stranger Things credit it's a well written clever show so it's easy to like a lot of the child characters because while being good to ok actors they get good material. I don't look at Aaron Taylor Johnson for instance and think just bad actor, but he didn't really get anything to work with in G14, and the people in Kong didn't get much better, though for the most part I would say there were improvements.
I'm not worried about the monsters because they've been done pretty well so far, and they have great set ups to work with those characters, but the human characters I have my doubts about. Especially since the family aspect fell hard on its face in 2014.
I don't think being psychic, which has been an overstated theory for Millie's character (based on nothing but her role in Stranger Things), isn't necessary for making her central to the story.
There have been plenty of child characters that carried stories without the need of being some fancy "biologist" or "zoologist". In fact, some of the better scripts revolve around everyday people simply engaged in extraordinary situations. I would hope this would be the route they go with her--And her parents are merely well-rounded, exposition vessels to make sense of her character's journey in the story. That would be my hope anyway.
I can't wait to see what they do with Rodan.
@G.H. (Gman)
I suppose that's true, I loved her on Stranger Things. I just don't know how she's going to carry the plot, unless she's psychic like how she is with Eleven.
@TheGman123
Most likely, I don't see why else he would of posted that. So that's a good sign, as it means that Ghidorah's origin will somehow involve space.
I covered a lot of these same story beats for my own creative writing, although Rodan wasn't included because he wasn't cool enough :P
As for how King Ghidorah is gonna be treated, what's interesting is that Mike Dougherty or one of the producers for Godzilla: King of the Monsters re-Tweeted a post by NASA about some kind of crystalline formation that's commonly found in space.
Hint? Maybe!
I hope (and in part feel) you're wrong about Brown's character. Right now she's the biggest name in the cast list thanks solely to Stranger Things and, arguably, an actress that can carry a movie on her own better than most.
I see her career being comparable to Chloe Grace Moretz in that she'll be a young face that takes on and carries more mature, action/sci-fi/fantasy roles.
^To be fair, Skull Island hasn't made Legendary any money yet.
There's been no official word from Bandai Creation about anything. Some think the line is dead and has been silently cancelled. Others think it's simply on hiatus until Godzilla 2.
Either way no one really knows, because Bandai hasn't said anything.
I would love to see them bring "The Beast from 20,000 fathoms" back. But I doubt it will happen.
I really like where this is going
Well they have writers board bouncing ideas off of each other for Godzilla vs Kong, so it's definitely happening. Whether or not it's the last movie depends on how good Godzilla: King of The Monsters and it do.
Whatever the case is, I hope it's good.
Yeah they've already said that the only returning character from the first is Ken Watanabe, which I'm fine with. I don't think they'll kill off Mothra and Rodan, but if they do and they do want Godzilla vs Kong to be last movie then I can see them being the last two kaiju duking it out. However I doubt Godzilla vs Kong is the last movie, Legendary seems very enthusiastic about the MonsterVerse and these movies have made them a good amount of money.
"Ford Brody and family need to stay far far away from any future movies."
Yup. Besides, Godzilla movies have always followed different casts from film to film. See no need to break that trend for some of the weakest characters in the 60+ series.
No disrespect meant, but Ford Brody and family need to stay far far away from any future movies. I can't honestly see them ever bringing back a character that was almost universally disliked. They've already started casting new characters/actors for G2, so I don't see the Brodys coming back anytime soon.
Honestly I do wish that they continue the MonsterVerse for at least two or three movies after GVK.
No, but Godzilla and Kong have been shown as the good guy in both their set up movies so without a real antagonist between the two it's likely a 3rd real villain shows up.
Just speculation of course based on what we have.
Of those MechaGodzilla is probably the most likely monster that will show up as the 3rd monster in Godzilla vs Kong, but I wouldn't count on it.
^I really do hope they continue, because I want to see Gigan, Kiryu, and Destoroyah at some point
That's as far ahead and they have planned, and these movies haven't exactly broke the bank to make them want to continue on.
^I'm not sure if it ends with Godzilla vs. Kong
I'd prefer if, assuming they finish after Godzilla vs Kong and don't continue, all the monsters except Godzilla die in KotM then with Godzilla and Kong being the last of the kaiju they duke it out.
Actually, the top 5 is:
5. Destoroyah
4. Gigan
3. Kiryu
2. Ghidorah
1. Godzilla
1. Godzilla
2. Rodan
3. Mechagodzilla
4. Ghidorah
5. Biollante
6. Destoroyah
7. Anguirus
8. King Caesar
9. Gigan
10. Mothra
