Unlike 1998, Serenity, and all those other franchises you mentioned above, we are guaranteed a sequel with GvK already filmed. This franchise has one more chance to live with arguably its best shot with general audiences. If GvK underperforms then its over. The monsterverse really lives and dies with that film, not KOTM.

Godzillatheking123,
The topic raised isn't about whether or not it's a failure, but rather if it will cause division. I've been with the online fan community, and conventions, since 1996. After watching the production, release and reactions for 13 productions since then, I believe my suggestion to be fairly realistic--Especially since it's largely happened, to varying degrees, each time.

G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumKOTM not a flop?

The Realist,
Fans liking the movie does not ensure anything at all. The general audience is divided and the fan base at large is still very niche. Respective fans of Serenity, Power Rangers '17, Scott Pilgram vs. The World, Speed Racer, etc, generally loved those films. But they either flopped, divided general audiences or both. It's great that the fanbase loves it, but historically that's not enough.

Godzillatheking123,
I'm not sure what to tell you if you're not going to listen to facts and what's been historically true. The fact is studios rarely, if ever, come out and admit if something is or is not a flop. It then lays at the feet of media outlets and audiences to determine if it was or was not successful based on numbers and reception. We could just as easily say Godzilla '14 was not confirmed to be successful, because the studio never said it was.

We can also cherry pick that "Transformers was different," but the fact is both it and Godzilla got weak critical reviews. So did Godzilla '98. Fans may like King of the Monsters more, but as I explained to The Realist, that doesn't guarantee anything.

And finally no one in this specific thread has said, "the Monsterverse is over," so I don't understand why you're trying to persuade otherwise. But since you broached the topic, I will say that given the numbers we're looking at, the odds aren't necessarily in its favor either.

Godzillatheking123Godzilla ForumKOTM not a flop?

Godzillatheking123: No, I still l don't buy your argument. What is ultimately the thing that really matters for the studio is whether they can turn a profit in a movie, not whether the perception of it being a flop or not.

The last transformers movie was different, because the audience grew tired of it as well, whereas before, the series teflon-like in resisting bad critical reviews. But here, Godzilla KOTM received good audience reviews.

And it seems premature we are saying the monsterverse is over. We don't know that yet.

The big difference here is that the fans like KOTM. Fans hated 1998 and the last two Michael Bay Transformers. So while KOTM might not be a huge financial success, it has not pissed off the fandom at large and the fans want more.

I'm giving it more time before I state my opinion. Right now I find it interesting to watch how it all pans out in terms of reception and box office.

Its also possible that the opposite will happen and KOTM becomes a "cult classic" for lack of a better term. I am curious tho, where do you stand on KOTM? I personally enjoyed it more upon my second viewing, so I am optimistic that it will age well.

I like that it has a different feel than 2014 and I enjoy both movies for different reasons.

I suppose we'll see more later. To step back a bit, a lot of the division regarding 2014 didn't become really vocal until months after the release. I think we'll see something similar with KotM. Right now the fandom is on the defensive, trying to surmise critics are wrong and the movie is great. I don't think everyone will remember it as well as its being pushed by the fandom right now. Everyone's still on their honeymoon period with the movie. Once it's over, that will eventually cause some division.

@G. H. (Gman)

I think KOTM is much less divisive than 2014 within the G fandom. I don't care nor am I referring to general audiences.

That being said, my point wasn't to say KOTM is not divisive, but I feel an Edwards sequel would have been for sure. In other words, Edwards returning would not have been a cure all.

My favorite moment was just seeing all the monsters back up on the big screen again. A scene in particular was when Godzilla appeared to fight Ghidorah in the Antarctic. Of course the OG Godzilla is my fave, always has been especially the Legendary one with his amazing design and roar and everything about it I just love.

It would have been a more serious film, which is why I really enjoyed the 2014 film. He really approached the monsters as horrific giant beasts, wreaking havoc on our world that could slowly lead us to extinction- unlike the latest 2019 film that morely is just a huge kaiju brawl that isn't very serious at all. I also know for a fact that Gareth would also provide us more ground-shots, really emphasizing the size and scale of the kaiju. The kaiju would have slower movements which would also help emphasize their size.

Not a good matchup. Godzilla wins, he can use the Atomic breath to kill Final Wars Hedorah easily, as it doesn't have the same resistance to it as Showa does. Plus, Millennium Hedorah doesn't have any feats.

RR44Godzilla vs. Kong (2020) ForumGodzilla vs. Kong 2020 supposed plot leak April 2019

Ahhh... the plot leaks... well... as for big G falling into a lava filled sinkhole and "dying"... right... sure... yup... un huh... he get blasted by a thermonuclear bomb in his face no less... and goes almost thermonuclear while fighting Ghidorah and survives... and falling into a lava filled sinkhole is going to kill him... more likely it will set him up for the next movie... and Kong survives minus an eye.

That is if this plot leak has ANY truth to it.

Either way... I don't care... I'm gonna see it regardless.

I'm cool with a March release... but they better not show too much footage prior to the movie... like they did with KOM. I think some folks just thought of KOM as another Pacific Rim type movie. This is why WB should have invested more in the 2014 G film and not put the Pacific Rim film in front of it.

I also think keeping the March date will help to keep the film within relevancy.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is still fresh in terms of overall cinema scope, and having a sequel less than a year away will hopefully ensure that the Monsterverse is kept within the public eye.

"The studio has confidence in the film," is also what was said about Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

I think keeping the March date is smart too, but I'm going to knock on wood and hope we're not shooting ourselves in the foot with confidence ourselves.

By not moving the release it also shows studio confidence with the film. All good signs imo.

The March release date is actually looking to be one of the more promising options right now.

While Mulan releases 2 weeks later and Onward is 1 week before, that's 2 whole weeks to itself as the primary action movie. It's going up against a Pixar film, sure, but it also has the advantage of landing during Spring Break.

I think Endgame drained moviegoing audiences a bit for all films that came after it. But this release date has no real major competition in the months preceding it; G.I. Joe has also been moved back to November it seems, which is good since that means the action genre will be exclusively for Godzilla vs. Kong for a good while.

And with the frontloading of box office takes, we really only need to be worried about Onward.
