Also, if Godzilla vs. Kong is 5 years after King of the Monsters, Madison sure does age slowly...
KaijuBuildz,
Yes, but even Director's Cuts need not be so self-indulgent. remember James Cameron filmed an entirely different ending for Terminator 2. The scene was completed, but James Cameron felt it was, "too neat" and didn't fit the movie. When he was allowed to do his Director's Cut of Terminator 2, he still left that scene out because he had the wherewithal and self-control to do away with unnecessary fluff and scenes that didn't work.
The Snyder Cut wasn't even entirely what Snyder envisioned--He added that awful, unnecessary epilogue scene, and Martian Manhunter (who was originally supposed to be Green Lantern), in reshoots.
Director's Cuts don't have to be that self-indulgent. Directors can think objectively about their work as well.
Issues with GvK aside, I respect Wingard sticking to his guns for a tighter piece.
@G. H. (Gman) About GvK, I definitely agree with you. About the Snyder Cut, not as much. This probable not the best Forum site to discuss this, but the intent of the Snyder Cut wasn't to make an actual movie like it would be released in cinemas. The point of the Snyder Cut was to show Zack's complete (and with some extra's) vision of a movie which he was tragically forced to leave and which was turned into a Frankensteins monster 4 years ago.
Realistically, If Snyder finished his version of the movie 4 years ago, a lot of the run time would have been reduced to the length of other movies because like you said, that's how movies are made. It helped that it was on a streaming service instead of in cinemas, the movie itself was even divided in chapters to make it easer to either take breaks or to even watch it like a show. I'm sure somebody will either calculate or even edit the Snyder Cut down to a tighter movie with a shorter run time.
Team Godzilla, particularly Madison, played the parts of sleuths. They were the mystery solvers, the characters we follow to figure out what APEX is doing.
Did their actions actually have much impact on the story as a whole. Well, no... But at least the film followed a procedure to show us what APEX was doing through those characters instead of explain it to us through dialog.
It's still hilarious that a "sinister" company had the time and money to sculpt out a Godzilla head for their big creation and make other adjustments so it looks like Godzilla.
At least Kiryu was built as an armor over Godzilla's bones, so they had no choice but to make it look like Godzilla. This skews closer to the pointlessness of the Heisei MechaGodzilla.
I mean, this is filmmaking 101. Most movies start with what's called "assembly cuts" that are just a bunch of scenes put in order with no ryhme or reason to the editing process. Almost every movie ever made clocks at 4-6 hours with these initial cuts. But once you're working on it in the editing room, you have to make tough choices to see what works, what doesn't work and, most of all, tighten the movie.
One of the reasons I loath the Snyder Cut of Justice League is because the director was so self-indulgent in his own footage and the length of the movie. He had no sense of cutting what was unnecessary.
Tighter movies are usually better and while I admit Godzilla vs. Kong is especially tight, sometimes directors simply realize a movie works better when you tweak plot points in post-production. Suddenly the movie becomes something completely different than planned, but still works.
Ah, I see. I did not know that, my bad. My points do still stand for me at least as I don't think they should have brought in MG this early on the Monsterverse.
Then again, I personally don't think MG was originally ment to be in this movie. Many of the scenes and characters felt forced and unnecessary to the overall plot of the movie, making me believe it wasn't part of the original story (maybe these could have been part of the reshoots way back?). The reason why I think they included him was because this could likely be the last Monsterverse movie and they wanted to complete the Toho Big 5 (Also, they already had the license because of RP1). This might also be why the time jump was added, to make MG a bit more believable in this universe, but at the end of the day these are all just speculations.
THEM!'s pretty cool
@KaijuBuilds
isnt GVK five years after KoTm? And Apex already said they were more advanced than Monarch
If they made post credit scene for Godzilla vs. Kong, it would go like this:
Monarch finds a gigantic egg in the ice, only to be interrupted by Godzilla, the Titan king stares at the egg and it begins to hatch. It hatches into a newborn specimen of Titanus Gojira. Godzilla roars at the Monarch helicopters and swims off along with his newly adopted son.
And I like how seems to almost laugh at Godzilla when he comes out of the building. Although, that might just be me.
yeah Ren Serizawa was just like:
Ren Serizawa: hey I pilot Mecha-Godzilla
King Ghidorah's Brain: Nope, I pilot Mecha-Godzilla mortal!
zaps
Ren Serizawa: dead...
MechaGodzilla: laughs in mechanized Ghidorah cackles
I have a feeling they'll expand Kong's d... I mean lore in later films
I liked how Mecha-Godzilla brought his arms and hands up like they were his extra heads (Ghidorah was definitely in control of this guy)
i am very excited for godzilla vs kong. We have top 5 wordpress hosting in the world.
#Releasethewingardcut?
1. Godzilla: King of the Monsters
2. Kong: Skull island
3. Godzilla 2014
4. Godzilla vs Kong
But I feel like they could have made literally anything else though? I mean you have some of the most advanced Technology and you choose to replicate Godzilla and not something like a Yeager or a Metal Gear? I know these are animals but surely they could spot the difference between the real Goji and a robot slightly resembling him. If anything it would have actually made more sense to base it of Ghidorah as it was also briefly an Alpha and seeing as it's head is used for the controls.
Also personally, my main problem isn't that MG looks like Godzilla, it's that they made the step from highly advanced aircraft in the previous film to a giant ass fighting robot in the span of about a year, let alone it being constructed in that time in secret.
And Kong got to fight more monsters, but you do have a good point. Maybe Kingdom Kong will do him justice.
Actually
1) KoTm
2) G 14’
3) GVK and Kong Skull Island
I love all these movies but I can’t decide if I like GvK or Skull island more
The arcs are incomplete. I say this because I do recognize the beginning and endings of arcs in GvK. I say beginnings and ending because theRe was no middle. Which should be the most interesting parts of the human story.
One example is the Guy on Team Kong. He wanted to use Kong to get in the hollow earth. Why he developed compassion to save Kong is beyond me. Maybe he was grateful or something but it’s never explained.
GVK had worse human characters than KOtm in my opinion. They could have done scenes between Madison and Mark having a strained relationship and him juggling his job and raising his daughter by himself and they become alienated and there’s a resolution to the film. But it’s left to the imagination. Josh felt like a useless character the entire film. The pouring a drink on the panel to stop MechaGodzilla was just bad writing and shows the movie wasn’t taking itself seriously. One critic describes the Movie as, “In a patchwork production full of bad ideas poorly executed, Jia also embodies the story’s only good idea.” I agree and disagree with this. While the ideas were poorly executed I don’t think they were bad.
Back to the Characters.... It’s just Ren Serizawa is a mess. I get the Dad and Daughter working together but why does Ren Exist? No backstory, just exists.
The movie had interesting ideas and implications for human stories that could have been done well but weren’t bothered with.
Ranking
I can’t I literally can’t.
To be fair tho GvK was more of a Kong film.
@GTheoryman
Its on the website Gman Posted. I tend not to trust websites like that... so I wait for it to arrive on Netflix
I see its scheduled to be on Netflix but I'm not able to watch it? How were you able to Gman? Are the specific channels open to the general public?
I mean, i guess Godzilla's usual mood is very pissed.
Finally my ranking
Godzilla 2014
Godzilla vs Kong
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Kong: Skull Island
My favorite humans in the MonsterVerse are Madison, Josh Brody, and Ishiro Serizawa
Godzilla laughed when he set Kong's ass on fire and was emotive (read: very pissed) when he kicked Kong's ass on the ships
When I said he I meant Gman. But I enjoyed GVK
So I mean, No Shin Goji best
when you comment on a topic thats last comment was two years ago
wait, did you just say gvk was better than shin?
I would like to see as a climax to the monsterverse a destroy all monsters film were all the titans (Aside from godzilla and kong) get mind controlled by spacegodzilla and attack major citys leading to a final battle where godzilla and kong (who is wearing a set of armor worn by his ancestors he found in the hollow earth) and a upgraded mechagodzilla made by monarch to destroy hostile titans fight spacegodzilla and his army of titans where they destroy his shoulder crystals andthe titans become free from space,gs control and gang up on him but they all get wrecked but then godzilla turns into burning godzilla and destroys spacegodzilla with a blast of atomic breath that drains godzillas power causing him to die and leaving a single skullcrawler as the last remaining titan.
