Gman, the plot synopsis for the movie mentions the word "eons", which means "a really long time". and it's referring to how long Godzilla has been "asleep" or something. I'm too lazy to pull up the synopsis.

ReplyKyeroGodzilla 2014 ForumGodzilla 2, DAM remake? Do you like that idea, and why?Oct 30, 2013
It was never a Destroy All Monsters sequel!
Why do people always misinterpret this?!
Gareth Edwards said he wanted to explore the concept of Monster Island, not remake Destroy All Monsters. There is a difference!
Paying attention to detail is a wonderful skill, and a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
DAM is Edwards' favorite Godzilla movie aside from the original, but he never at any time said he wanted to do a sequel based on that film. He wants to explore the concept of Monster Island.
Don't start a thread based on misinterpreted information please. It's a waste of time for everyone.
ReplyKyeroGodzilla 2014 ForumAnother theory: Why the REAL trailer is going to appear on Nov 3 and why the teaser was leaked intentionallyOct 30, 2013
The real problem with this theory is the fact that the quote comes from Robert Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer, the man who made the speech and who is being quoted in the "proof of concept trailer" from which this whole topic is based on, was not thinking about Godzilla's 59th theatrical anniversary when he made the speech.
The phrase "Vishnu takes on his multi-armed form and says...
...Now I am become death. The destroyer of worlds." was entirely coincidental.
What is happening here with this theory is what has happened since the announcement of a new Godzilla movie in 2010.
Fans are reading too much into it.
There is no secret message in the proof of concept trailer that Gareth Edwards released in 2012 at SDCC. It's just a short teaser he made to prove he was on the right track and that his vision of Godzilla was true to fan expectations.
Nothing more.
ReplyKyeroGodzilla 2014 ForumGodzilla will no longer be king Oct 30, 2013
Godzilla's title as "King of the Monsters" was first born during the 1956 Americanized version of the original Gojira film when the title was changed from Gojira to Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
The title stuck, and Godzilla was referred to as "King of the Monsters" not because it was a real title, but because it was the original Gojira film which gave birth to the giant Kaiju genre. The monster movies which inspired Godzilla were fun and just as campy as most of Godzilla's Showa films, but they were hardly on the scale that Godzilla himself represented.
As the monster which inspired so many other giant monster films, Godzilla was referred to as the "King of the Monsters."
It's not, nor has it ever been, a real title that Godzilla has worn of necessity. It's a term of endearment, nothing more.
Godzilla is simply Godzilla, but regardless he always has been and always will be the undisputed King of the Monsters in the minds and hearts of true G-fans.

@YOURFACE
It's not that hard to understand, but I'll try and spell this out slowly for you.
The information provided about the growths in the silkworms tells us that the direction Legendary Pictures is taking with the film does in fact have merit and is scientifically sound. They are going to exaggerate the growth and mutation of the monsters for the sake of the story, but it is never the less very much based on what is actually taking place in the world today.
The "different contemporary issue" of the movie will likely still be nuclear accidents, as contemporary can be taken to mean simply "occurring in the present time". It's not about the 1954 nuclear bombs dropped on Japan, but about something much more recent and just as real as Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Godzilla and the other Mutos are going to be a product not of 1950's nuclear tech, but modern day nuclear tech which would further explain and give credibility to LP Godzilla's increased size versus his earlier Toho counterpart. The same goes for the Mutos.
Was that simple enough for you to understand?

@INSTINCTIVEGIGAN - "Images" does not automatically translate to trailers. Someone else touched on it a bit, but images mean images.
Anyway, I'm skeptical about this leading to a Godzilla trailer anytime soon. I still don't believe a single word about the November 3rd date, as I already destroyed the Godzilla-Movies.com facebook post about the subject by breaking down their "evidence" piece by piece as nothing more than fan speculation and wishful thinking, and I don't expect a trailer anytime soon at all. I do hope Legendary puts out a trailer sometime soon, but don't hold your breath.
If it does in fact arrive on November 3rd for the Big-G's 59th anniversary of his theatrical debut, then hallelujah. But again, don't hold your breath.

@ESNKD - "the original godzilla movie didnt really show the full monster,"
Have you even watched the original Godzilla? Because the answer to that statement of yours is : "Yes it did."
The original Godzilla showed the full creature several times over extended segments as a matter of fact. Many shots were only the torso or feet, but the whole suit was in fact on screen quite a lot in the original film.
Another fun fact is that the original film showed the monster's face at about the 22 minute mark complete with a roar and everything as he looked over the hill at Dr. Yamane, Emiko, and the other villagers as they fled in terror.
For this newer film to work, what with the advances in technology and CGI and effects and the sophistication of audiences, Legendary would be wise not to show the monster's face (let alone his full form) until at least the 40-45 minute mark. Showing a foot, a claw, a few spines or perhaps even the mouth would be alright within the first chunk of the film, but if they want Godzilla's first major appearance to really have the impact that it needs and deserves, they'd be wise not to show his face as early as the original film did.
Watching Godzilla (1954) today, seeing the monster so early actually takes away some of the fear factor of seeing him in his entirety later on in the movie when we already knew what to expect. It's still one of the greatest films of all time and definitely the best Kaiju movie to date, but I still believe the monster was shown too early.
For Legendary to get it right, Godzilla's full form should not come in for a good chunk of the early part of the film. Only his roar and perhaps one or two other small snippets of his claws or feet for a while.

Luca Comic show is one of the oldest and biggest comic/sci fi/fantasy cons in the world. You may not of heard of it, but that's by-the-by, it's big enough to merrit (sic) a premier of the trailer. ReplyG. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumMost misunderstood Godzilla movie??Oct 30, 2013
Not saying good or bad, but depth wise there's really no difference. Once again the characters weren't all that likable or memorable, but neither are most characters from Godzilla movies.
Granted many characters in the Godzilla series aren't memorable, but they typically stand for something culturally important. Emiko and Ogata stood for a change in Japanese tradition at the time-- women refusing betrothed men and pursuing their own lovers. Junko stood for Japanese women standing up and having a voice in their country, as she begged the Shobijin to for Mothra's help. General Tachibana stood for war veterans and an era becoming forgotten by his country's people. The list goes on. Even when the characters were thin, they at least had cultural depth.
Regardless, with GINO, depth isn't the problem. Likability is. And regardless of what Godzilla movie you're watching the characters typically have an enjoyable trait that passes the charm and quirks that the series is known for. GINO didn't have any of that. (With the exception of Jean Reno, who was fairly good.)
The movie wasn't supposed to be Godzilla that we've seen. It was meant to be a new 1.
But it was supposed to be Godzilla. That was the title of the movie. I'm all for progressing the series, but when you alter the character and its traits to the point of being unrecognizable you've already failed.
True it would have been better if the atomic breath was included, or maybe the invulnerability, but once again to be fair that all may have been included had toho not made them change the script, or pay for copyrights to Ghidorah or Mothra.
I'm not entirely sure where this idea that Toho made them change the script came from. If you're referring to the Jan de Bont script, it was largely because it was considered too expensive and, at the time, too impossible to film. The inclusion of the Griffon and the battles they'd have were too big for special effects technology at the time. And this was even after Sony declined to make the film a sequel to vs. MechaGodzilla II.
The mythology around godzilla can't really be included as it changes depending on the movie and series, and he stood for nuclear energy the same as every other incarnation it just wasn't done as well.
Edwards is currently proving you wrong there. He's used the original film's mythology as a basis for the new film, but that's a creative choice. Godzilla has been used for an array of social issues from nuclear deterrence to the supposed wrath of nature. He could've picked any era of the series and current social issues to link to them. The problem in GINO is that the monster wasn't used for any sort of social commentary. Just because it had nuclear origins doesn't mean it stood for anything. After the creature was created the movie didn't explore the dangers of nuclear energy or any other related issues. It was simply a catalyst for action sequences.
As I said when comparing it with the worst Godzilla movies as a critic and not a Godzilla fan, or even as a fan it holds up pretty well for the most part, on every aspect.
Not very high praise. Even if GINO is something with more cinematic merit than, say, Godzilla vs. Megalon, it still doesn't capture the same, relevant weight as that movie. Even vs. SpaceGodzilla had to ram down a forced, 'polluting space' message down our throats. Poorly done and inferior to most aspects of GINO? Yes. Is it a better example of the character and the stories he inhabits? On a thematic level, yes. And that is something even the most highly regarded critics must take into account.
A lot of hate it is receiving is just unfair for the most part. When I first saw it I hated it too, as a fan but as I've rewatched it later I realized by no means is it the worst Godzilla movie, it just went for something different some may consider that a bad thing but personally I didn't have a problem with it, and to be honest this all comes down to preference. Sure you may hate it, but apparently judging by the comments there are plenty of Godzilla fans who also believe this movie gets a bad rep when it doesn't necessarily deserve it.
Indeed, preference is what it all comes down to. But it's also important to know why it's accepted as a terrible film. There are expectations when you put a franchise title on any movie and this one did not meet them on any level. It makes a better non-Godzilla movie, granted, but on no grounds does it make a decent film.

It depends on what each studio wants.
Of course, first, the movie has to be successful. But if it is Warner Brothers will want a piece of that pie and not budge with the contract.
Legendary just seems content having creative control of the thing, so whatever is the easiest route to make the movie would probably be their choice.
As for Toho, who knows what they'd want. I'm sure they would understand the situation between WB and Legendary. Still, even if they preferred Universal to take control that doesn't mean WB would be down for it.
It's hard to say. It also made me wonder what other possible franchises WB and Legendary are permanently tied to.

I hate to say it, but this movie isn't going to show a trailer any time soon. @MiketheG7453
Actually, that that may not true. Everyone seems to be forgetting Toho here...
Keith Aiken, one of the contributors to Sci-Fi Japan and a current storyboard artist in LA, explained that the agreement with Toho, was that Legendary and WB would be partners for the American Godzilla franchise. That agreement still holds.
Kind of like how Legendary and Warner Brothers still had a DC agreement (although the difference is WB owns DC). The two companies still had it in their contract to do a Man of Steel 2 together. Legendary is out of it now, but had they not gotten out of the contract Legendary would have been making the next Man of Steel (or Batman vs. Superman rather) with Warner Brothers despite being partnered with Universal.
The issue is more complicated with Godzilla. As of right now if a sequel were greenlit, both Legendary and Warner Brothers would have to re-team for Godzilla 2-- because that's the partnership Toho agreed to, not one with Universal. WB would still be shooting themselves in the foot, unless they wanted to renegotiate their stake in the future of the franchise.
That said, while I don't expect a teaser on November 3rd, I don't think The Hobbit is out of the realm of possibility. A lot of trailers are coming out at once right now and most studios don't like doing that so close to each other because they don't want the hype of each movie to cannibalize one another.
I'd actually rather Godzilla be one of the last trailers we get this year so it's pretty fresh in people's minds once the New Year starts.
