I imagine that he will show up once it gets close to a media event again.

I was wondering when he'd submerge again. There's not going to be a lot in the way of news for a few months. Productions for next year typically go quiet until late in the year after a big Comic Con showing.

You can purchase a digital copy of Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla and Son Godzilla on Vudu for $9.99 a pop. I use Vudu a lot so I'm contemplating it.

My list goes like this:

1950s: Gojira (1954)

The only other competitor in this decade is Godzilla Raids Again.

1960s: Monster Zero (1965)

Great plot with visiting another planet plus Kumi Mizuno in her prime.

1970s: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

First introduction of Mechagodzilla, even if it's not a flawless one.

1980s: Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)

Had a hard time with this one. I really like The Return of Godzilla for its tone, but Godzilla vs. Biollante is more engaging in terms of plot and human characters.

1990s: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)

My all-time favourite: time travel, bubble economy, evil futurians, android, and Mecha-King Ghidorah.

2000's: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)

This movie grew on me over the years. The human story is a mixed bag, but I loved Kiryu and the fights. Michiru Oshima also provided awesome music score. Close second is Tokyo SOS.

2010s: Godzilla (2014) (so far)

I have re-watched it recently, because of the King of the Monsters trailer, and still found it as enjoyable as when I first checked it out in the theatre. I respect Shin Gojira for the risks it took, but it's not that entertaining to me.

I became a fan when I accidentally saw Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah on TV when I was 10. Then came other movies either on TV or VHS. With the advent of DVDs and internet, I started checking more and more out of Big G's rich filmography. I live in Poland, so no-Toho-on-the-big-screen, but I really liked seeing Gareth Edward's Godzilla in cinema and I'm impatiently waiting for the sequel. I'm very happy that I found your forum.

Deep bra. I think more simply it is the mark they leave on society and the lessons they teach . These movies were so well done that people just can't get enough of it , and they keep trying to portray these characters better. They are so different than anything we had seen before , that we are never to forget them.

That’s a great question. I think it’s a combination of factors as well. It can come down to timing, story, characters, and even more importantly, the actors playing those characters, and the main antagonist creature and how it’s portrayed/conceptualized.

In the case of Alien, first and foremost you have a great movie/story. The characters are great and you really like and care for them. As for the alien itself, nothing like it had ever been seen before. It was and is an incredibly unique design and it was scary as all hell. The combination of those factors make that one special movie.

With Predator, first and foremost, you have Arnold. He was a huge box office draw during that time. His name alone was going to guarantee butts in the seats. Then you had a charismatic cast of testosterone charged characters who each brought something different to this ensemble. They were the Expendables before the Expendables! Now, you put this super team up against a very original and superior alien enemy, throw in some humor and awesome actions sequences, and you have the start of a franchise.

With Godzilla, although he’s been many things to many fans over the years, he too has always been a very original and unique creation. I compare Godzilla to the starship Enterprise from Star Trek (specifically the original). Each was an amalgamation of different things (Godzilla – dinosaur, dragon, sea serpent. Enterprise – flying saucer, rocket, airplane/jet) that came together to form something that was greater than the sum of its parts; again, something not seen before. Godzilla’s never been cookie cutter, from his unique roar, to the shape of his spines, and the fact that he not only breathes fire, but concentrated radiation! The first Godzilla is a cautionary tale, and something obviously that resonates with the Japanese in a vastly different way than the rest of the world. That first movie is so subdued and in stark contrast with most that came after it; for me it’s a very special movie and my favorite.

With these characters, there have been sequels of varying quality and in most cases, diminished returns, but they have had staying power and popularity I think because of their uniqueness. Long live the B monster movie!

A lot of it has to do with timing - the obsession with sexual disease in the 1970s with Alien - the rise of testosterone heaving action stars/pictures for Predator - the nuclear-phobia with Godzilla. Some things just strike such a chord with cultures at the time that their impact is everlasting.

Now obviously a lot of these messages have been lost on many later audiences. Each of these franchises have either struggled to stay relevant with current events or have become watered down. Either way I'd say it's the initial reaction to their relevance that skyrocketed their popularity.

@G. H. (Gman) Something I forgot to mention. I did see Ebirah, Horror of the Deep 4 years ago, but I don't remember much of it. I might need to rewatch it again. Plus I have a VHS of King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), so I might see that. Other than that, yeah, I need a lot of catching up to do.

Honestly, I went on a Hulu binge last year when they had the Halloween marathon and they started to blend together. The ones that really stood out to me were the one(s?) with Mecha Godzilla and anything with Mothra.

I cannot recall the actual names of the movies or years since the history is so long. I am sort of waiting for KOTM as I am for The Predator- not getting too excited but waiting to buy them since I am feeling they will be really good.

Great human plot an the introduction of my all time favorite Godzilla enemie.

1970’s: Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)

Overall one of my favorite Godzilla battles in the franchise, introduces Mechagodzilla and still has an interesting plot.

1980’s: Godzilla vs Biollante (1989)

One of the best and most unique kaiju in the franchise, biollante just steals the show for me in this movie.

1990’s: Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1993)

One of the best human stories in the franchise whilst still including some great kaiju action and a great new take on King Ghidorah.

2000's: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)

I have never had so much fun watching a Godzilla movie like this one. The effects are incredibly in this movie, the fights are Great and the human story (though not as good as the ”Godzilla against Mechagodzilla”) is still fun to watch.

2010’s: Godzilla (2014) (though ”king of the monsters” is looking even better from what we have seen already)

Even though the buildup for the ending was at some points frustrating, the end fight makes up for that. A great american reimagining of the king of the monsters.

My list is fairly similar to yours Gman. (Side note, how do we tag things the site, I still haven't figured it out)

1950's: Godzilla (1954)

1960's: Monster Zero, I wonder if this makes a clear distinction to the Japanese version, Invasion of Astro-Monster. Nick Adams helps make this movie legendary.

1970's: Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (I still haven't seen the Japanese version of Terror of MechaGodzilla since its expensive as holy hell, so this is subject to change.)

1980's: I'll just say The Return of Godzilla to be definitive, but it's definitely a toss up with Biollante. 

1990's: Godzilla 2000

2000's: GMK

2010's: Shin Godzilla, though King of the Monsters has me very hopeful. If it brings me back to that special place in my childhood it will take this spot, the movie doesn't even have to be that good or deep. I say this only because I want a modern "easy watch" Godzilla movie. I have to be in certain states of mind to watch 2014, Shin, or the anime movies.

I haven't seen any of the movies from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s, but I did see the ones from the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s (When they were still on Hulu. Remember that?). So here's mine by each decade:

1990s: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (Because the Back to the Future trilogy helped me understand the time travel plot of this film.)

2000s: For this, it's between Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (Because I have both versions of the Neca figure for this Godzilla. I got them from Toys R Us as Christmas gifts.) or Godzilla: Final Wars

2010s: For this, it's either Godzilla (2014) [Because I have the 6-inch version of the Neca figure for this Godzilla. I also got this from Toys R Us as a Christmas gift.] or Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

And that's about it for me. Sorry if it is short.

Actually in the original draft of Godzilla he was supposed to eat the M.U.T.O.'s but they scrapped it yet we got to see kong eat the mire squid in Kong skull island my guess is that it was because the M.U.T.O.'s had enough character that it wouldn't have been pleasant to have the be eaten on screen but who knows maybe when Godzilla went back into the water he might have taken the female M.U.T.O.'s body to with him to eat later.

It's all fan conjecture, so I'm not worrying about Cloudorah.

I'm more concerned about these amulets that the Exif keep communicating/predicting the future with. What if King Ghidorah isn't a physical entity at all and some sort metaphysical horror they've been in touch with the whole time. The only way they perceive it in their minds is a three headed terror.

Like MechaGodzilla City, it would be an interesting concept, but unfortunate after all the promotion Toho is doing for the monster we're used to seeing. The backlash would be relentless.

I'm still dreaming of hearing a rendition of "Get Rodan!" from the original film playing during Rodan's confrontation with the fighter jets we see in the trailer.

I thought the sequel was far better than Planet of the Monsters, but I do agree. I loved the world building, but when that doesn't contribute to how the story plays out, it does end up feeling like pointless fluff. The nanometal concept was actually one of the few things I wanted to see a film tackle with MechaGodzilla, but the execution was boring since all it amounted to was an expanded version of the original plan. Here's to hoping Ghidorah gets a proper appearance.

Thought's on the possibility of space cloud Ghidorah Gman? 

Considering how aggressively mediocre they've been it's not surprising. I actually enjoyed the sequel more and felt it juggled a lot of interesting topics that are too cerebral for the Monsterverse. But the execution of these ideas, and the over-reliance on world building, really leaves a lot to be desired.

I wonder... Will he use Rodan's 1956 theme or the 1964-1993 theme converted from Varan. I like the latter more, but it might be kinda cool to hear Rodan's original theme again.

Well, let's just hope Legendary doesn't disappoint.

How do we know that the title King of the Monsters is not referencing Ghidorah as the King... I mean after all... he is know as King Ghidorah in movies past. 

Godzilla is a God for all intents and purposes as referenced by Sally Hawkings character. So this title "King" may be referring to Ghidorah. Mind you... that's just speculative thinking on my part.

And I am still not convinced that TOHO isn't planning a monsterverse with Legendary after KK vs G. This rendering of Godzilla could be the one that TOHO has waited for.  I think that money talks and because of the plot surrounding Rodan and Mothra and Ghidorah… TOHO will want a  continuation of the franchise with a collaboration between them and Hollywood. I think success for this next film will dictate future films... much like what TOHO wanted with the 98 Godzilla... but did not get. Hence Godzilla 2000... which was a direct response to the failure of the 98 oddzilla.

One of the best things about a Godzilla movie is the soundtrack. I'm confident we'll get a great one with Bear McCreary. I can't wait to hear the classics and the new stuff.

Man this trilogy has really lost all it's gas in the fan base with King of the Monsters coming out soon
