Godzilla vs Gigan is one of my personal favourites, it has one of the better human stories of the showa era and some great monster stuff as well as some...not so great stuff...but that stuff is very minor and outweighed by how great the rest of the movie is, it also has one of my favourite visual effects of the entire showa era that I don't want to spoil if you haven't seen the movie but it involves a certain characters shadow (for those who have seen the movie so they know which scene I'm referencing)
I'm not sure I'd give anything with three heads and flight that has trouble hitting a hummer a 10.
Godzilla should be tied with Ghidorah. They were on an even playing field in terms of might during all of their fights--with Ghidorah's only advantage being his flight. In their second showdown Godzilla was going to win in the water, and Ghidorah needed to juice up on an electrical plant in their final bout and stun Godzilla. With no advantages, no flight for Ghidorah, and no water for Godzilla--they're dead even and a fight can go either way.
I just hope it will be good.
I dunno which ones you should buy
Since we're cutting the numbers down I'll just list bare necessities for 1 reason or another.
Gojira
Ghidorah The Three-Headed Monster
Godzilla vs Destoroyah
There are a lot of other ones that I like more or close to the ones I listed but those are huge event films that matter to the series as a whole for me so going with them first as recommendations.
I agree with all except Scylla and Mothra.
I think Mothra and Rodan should be around the same, especially since she technically won their fight. so they should both be 8 in my opinion.
and Scylla seems like a stronger and bigger MUTO, I see him/her being a 7.
There isn't only one or two great things here in this movie, but many. The action was unbelievable and Mike Dougherty did not disappoint. The nuclear pulse ability from Godzilla was so awesome. I had some moments that almost made me jump, especially when Godzilla was doing the "light show." The look of all the monsters was top notch. I loved Ghidorah's heads personalities. That was funny. Bottom line, this movie would have done much better if it weren't for the lame critics trashing it. Anyway, two of my favorite scenes were when Godzilla came back up out of his lair and spit fire into the sky, then the end where the other kaiju bowed to him. CLASSIC!!!!
It's the best score for a Godzilla film since 2003--And I actually quite enjoy all of the scores released since 2014.
McCreary's themes are fantastic and the way he uses Ifukube's pieces is the most creative I've ever heard them woven into a score.
To be fair, a great many of them are pricey since so many are out-of-print. Some you really have to pounce on before they skyrocket in price.
Also, in terms of the Heisei films, Blu-ray is the only way to go. The DVD versions are particularly awful as they only include the dub and two of the movies aren't even in widescreen.
I loved it, but I really don’t like the new version of the Blue Oyster Cult song. Chanting is great, just don’t like the lead singer’s voice
I think that his score is, by a VERY wide margin, the absolute best OST ever produced for the Monsterverse.
Heck, it's just a great OST by itself.
My favorite part was when Mothra stabbed Rodan. So cool, and the buildup leading to that scene is excellent as well. If I had a second it would be Ghidorah’s head growing back. I did not see that coming.
Favorite Titan is Mothra. Favorite Mothra design yet, as she has so many powers like her silk ability. Her sacrifice was beautiful as well
I'm looking to get all of them including the mothra movies, rodan, space ameoba, war of the gargantuas, frankenstien conquers the world, basically any movie that has any amount of cross over into the godzilla franchise, I also want to get the gamera movies just incase all our dreams come true and we get that vs movie that has been argued about by fans for decades (shhh let me dream)
@Gomi: Ninja Monster
I 100% agree, it should be brains vs brawn, I would never want Kong to have lightning powers that would make him powerful enough to just beat and zap Godzilla to death, I would still expect him to be weaker than Godzilla, it would just give him another weapon that he can use to his advantage when needed or he could utilise strategically, I wouldn't want it to be enough to defeat godzilla alone
as for the gravity beams, no they were never really shown to do anything gravity related in the showa films but being that they were called Gravity beams I drew the conclusion that the implication of them is that they are beams of intense super high gravity that did impact damage rather than true electrical damage, you see his beams crush buildings which lighting wouldn't do so I assumed they were literally beams of focused gravity, whether that was really the intent or not, I am not sure but I was surprised they didn't do something like that in the new movie since they continue to call his beams Gravity beams
Has anyone read this fully? I own it and started it, but so far it's pretty much a shot for shot copy of the movie. Granted I'm only on page 30 or so, but I'm wondering if it gets much better, I don't really enjoy novelizations that stay exact course with the movie since in which case I would usually go see the movie. A little sad because I really liked the NJO books I've read from Greg Keyes.
Absolutely one of the high points of the film. Every music que and ost score was something I enjoyed thoroughly. Regardless of your feelings on KOTM I think McCreary inarguably made a great score.
That would maybe be Methuselah
this sounds so cool!
The Realist
I could surely see that happening! it would be good for the franchise I think.
i already own 2014 and kong. I definitely will look into Mothra and the original though! the original is a little pricey on amzon, it may have to wait. Thanks for the response!
I actually have less time to think about it seeing as how they are Web exclusive meaning less will be made and they are from King of the Monsters so more people are aware of the movie
It does look like Anguirus. Maybe it is. *Gasp*
Is it possible for Toho and Legendary to cooperate without WB being involved? If Toho is in LA, I see this as a very viable possibility. Similar to how Paramount was cut out of the MCU.
This means Kong is also an alpha
I think King Kong and Godzilla for sure. I guess there is really two ways they could do this. They could make teams or they could just have Godzilla and Kong fight by them selves. Although from the last one I think it will be pretty hard to do that because Godzilla is now king of monsters and it is hard for the other monsters not to fight back. I really don't know how it will end either. The only thing I really don't want to happen is they both to work it out by saying my moms name was Martha too. Otherwise I cannot wait to see the ending to this film. Also I think if this film does good the monsterverse will continue. If they don't I think the Japanese will keep making Shin Godzilla. So I really hope Godzilla vs Kong does good and bring in new fans to the monster verse.
I love this movie. I know there wasn't as much fighting as the new one but there were many great scenes explaining Godzilla. Also I thought the end was a great finish to the whole movie. The famous line "let them fight" really was a great finisher. Also the scenes were they are just trying to find Godzilla were a key part to the film. Also it was just starting the series off. Most of the time the first movies in the series are just saying what will happen for the rest of the time. Like Captain America: The First Avenger or Star Wars A New Hope. Both of those films did a great job of starting off the series for a new more exciting sequel.
I would get the 2014 one easily. Also the original if you can find it. Also the original Mothra from 1961. Also if you just like the monster verse check out the first King Kong ever made.
My point was not to criticize Shin, or imply it wasn't a huge success. What I meant is taking on all the cost with no guarantee of success is not nearly as enticing as sitting back and collecting free money. If I remember correctly, Final Wars was a massive financial disappointment for Toho.
Burning Godzilla in KOTM was more powerful than in 1995 when he fought destroyah. But sad we didn't get to see the hiper spiral atomic breath that would've been so awsom

Sorry autocorrect its mothra not Morgan.
Sadly mother died. She sacrificed herself for Godzilla but wait remember Morgan is immortal and she had an egg so her life is in that her memory and everything and they said she might come back the the 3rd godzilla which means she might comeback in Godzilla VS Kong. Hopefully.
But yeah it seems like after shin Gojira he started to take over but I think their could be a Godzilla movie after Godzilla vs kong in maybe 2 or 3 years or just no.
Dark Phoenix was trashed by critics, and so was The Secret Life of Pets 2, and those movies were the biggest competition KOTM had heading into the weekend. This might give the film legs, and help it make more this weekend than it would have (since it is clear RT scores matter to the general audience).
This film made less than any other Monsterverse movie so far because WB decided to release it in a very packed time (I have no idea why, it was stupid of them). This movie had major competition from movies like Aladdin, Rocket Man, Ma, and John Wick 3 in it's opening. And this weekend it is being put against Dark Phoenix and The Secret Life Of Pets 2. I believe if this film was put up against smaller films, or released earier in the year, it would have done a significant number higher at the Box Office than it did.
I read an article that stated Legendary and WB were not sweating after the low-ish opening of KOTM, because the international numbers are what's really important, (especially China, which is started to have a larger market for movies than the U.S.) and it has still not even been a week yet the film has already made its budget back.
Godzilla vs Kong is sure to bring many newcomers in, and its release around no other big movies yet, and the name GvK, is all setting it up to be the biggest film in the Monsterverse.
I believe it is still surely possible for there to be more movies after GvK in the Monsterverse.
and, like G. H. Gman said, TOHO just invested in an L.A. studio, so they are either going to be co-producing with Legendary, or they are trying to get into more markets to show there films to a larger audience.
