Let's not be too pessimistic. Or optimistic, depending on how you view this movie. Who knows? Maybe things'll have improved by the time November rolls around.
We just can't catch a break, can we?
I would say 2021 would probably be a good idea at this point, even if it still has no chance of outcompeting whatever it goes up against then at least it will have some breathing room.
I'm dying laughing, because you have to appreciate the irony. China, once the Monsterverse's glowing ray of hope, is now a pain in the ass due to the coronavirus forcing studios to shuffle release schedules.
It would be best for the movie to just be released in 2021 now, but Legendary/WB would have to get that okayed by Toho based off what Shinji Higuchi said about their deal.
The release schedule was already pretty tight, but now there's no likelihood GvK could do well in November. WB will probably move it again, I'm sure, but the question is where.
Moldovan0731 I mean, the MonsterVerse didn't really have a singular set tone between the first two movies, so there's that.
Offhand, I'd like for the MonsterVerse to continue, because I feel like there's a lot of room for stories to tell in it. But if GvK goes the way I think it will, then I can see it as a good end-point from a narrative angle.
Well, this could pose pretty godd competition if most people didn't notice the wokeness in the trailer... I'm okay with the Monsterverse ending with Godzilla vs Kong though. I think the Monsterverse kinda fell apart/became inconsistent with KOTM/Michael Dougherty.

It almost deffinately won't, considering the title is Godzilla vs Kong. If it were along the lines of Final Wars, such as inclusions of several classic monsters, the film would be cheating the audience, and it would probably make little profit as a result. Also, fitting in an end battle between Godzilla and Kong with a definate winner amongst all that would be way too scattered, especially in a less-than 2 hour movie, so I don't think that will be the case.
Please don't let this be Final Wars
Due to the spoiler-filled toys that were leaked recently (from Playmates I believe?), it would appear that GvK has the potential of being very scattered, with too many subplots and and forced character inclusions (no spoilers). However, the makers of the film could have deffinately found a way to make it work. So in a ~110 minute runtime, the movie can go two ways: it could be a well paced, gripping, focused blockbuster, or a chaotic, scatterbrained, crammed disaster with too much on its plate... who knows ¯_('-')_/¯
Most Godzilla movies have a similar run time... but for the Monsterverse, I'm not sure. It probably will be a similar pacing to KOTM, which worries me a bit, but it's probably not going to be god awful like Final Wars.
Here's what I think: the Monsterverse Mechagodzilla is built around the bones of the skeleton seen in the opening of Godzilla (2016). The red-spined "Mega Godzilla" is what happens after they manage to trigger the cloning/regen of that Godzilla, and Mechagodzilla becomes more of a Cyborg-Godzilla, kind of like the Cybergodzilla from Godzilla: The Series. That big red, metal structure of spines is the artificial reactor and energy weapon system for the beast. This would let Kong "beat" a full, flesh-and-blood Godzilla without killing off the Big H himself, and could lead to the movie having this structure:
Kong v Godzilla: no winner
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla: Mechagodzilla wins
Godzilla and Kong v Mechagodzilla: G and K win
Godzilla and Kong v Mega-Godzilla: Mega-Godzilla beats Godzilla seemingly to death but is killed by Kong
Godzilla absorbs Mega-Godzilla's radiation, but doesn't finish off the injured Kong
Movie ends with Godzilla as the defacto Alpha, but both know Kong is strong enough to hold the position. Mothra will probably be involved, too, as will Rodan. Hopefully in more than appearing just to killed roles.
EDIT: Alternatively, "Mega-Godzilla" is what kicks the plot off. Bad guys manage to control/direct Godzilla using the red metal rig and Kong is either the first target as a rival Alpha they can't control, or as an attempt by Monarch to stop evil Godzilla. Kong wins, so Plan B, Mechagodzilla, is activated. Kong proves unable to beat the metal monstrosity, but then a "reports of my death were greatly exaggerated" Godzilla arrives and beats Mechagodzilla into scrap, maybe with an assist from Kong. This would also allow a loophole for Kong to "beat" Godzilla, but not kill him permanently.
Though, personally I hope for a version where Godzilla wins. I think it would be appropriate to have Godzilla win in the US film where Kong won in the Japanese film. A gentlemanly tip of the hat to the other culture's greatest monster, and all. I guess we'll see.
I put those randomly at any time, place, and position for reasons beyond your understanding.
Gmkgoji Isn't this kinda the wrong place to put this?
so if its less than 2 hours it must be 1:59:59
Just a little joke
But for real less than 2 hours, they might go straight into the final battle quick.
Q : Titanus Qetzalcoatl.
Y'all know that old movie at least needs a "Q2".
Ooh, one more, Titanus Tetanus. Ouch!
~Rift Rat.
Sick toy!
Wait, Kong destroys Godzilla's dorsals to neutralize his Atomfire blasts? Excuse me.
YaAahghkt. Mnum-mih. Milmpf. Plerval.
Splork.
Looks pretty good, but best design ever? Including the movies? I still prefer the movie designs better, but this IS an awesome design. The head's a bit weird though.
That'd be fucking amazing!
I have to agree with lazy.It would be an interesting setup.
Monster X/Keizer Ghidorah was going to be my first answer but Gigan would be great if they introduce advanced alien civilizations. Essentially being a more advanced rendition of Mechagodzilla, being complete cybernetic with both synthetic and organic parts harmoniously blended together
TheLazyFish Or how about a war between different species of Ghidorahs?
Gigan would be awesome... so would Destoroyah... and Biollante... They'd all fit really well. But I have to go with
Keizer Ghidorah
... or Desghidorah
Imagine what having other Ghidorahs could mean! It'd mean there could be a whole planet of them! A whole herarchy! It could mean a whole war between the Earth Titans and the Ghidorahs, or against a single, extremely powerful version of Ghidorah!
^
I would go for Mokele-mbembe
And how exactly would Gigan fit into the story?
I'm with Xenotaris. g i g a n
Looks cool
Looking at the runtimes of past Godzilla movies, I noticed that a lot of them actually seem to run under two hours. So this isn't really anything new, I don't think.
If we're going by MonsterVerse creatures, then Titanus Leviathan or Kraken. But if I could manage it, I'd probably slip Anguirus or Baragon or Varan in there somehow.
I was expecting this movie to be 2 hours so this caught me by surprise hopefully the pacing isnt effected though
I don't like the head. But other than that, it looks good.
Yea I really love the dorsal fins
JurassicKaiju14
Villain, antagonist, instigator; they're synonyms (of sorts) within the context of the film, but with certain differences that I guess I didn't pay much attention to. If you you were talking about something different than a villain (to say that Godzilla is only the cause of the conflict, not the bad guy), I just misinterpreted what you said. I also believe that Godzilla's attempted domain over Skull Island will be the cause of the conflict, but like I said, I don't think he'll be made out to be the villain / antoganist, as he's been the "hero" to mankind in all the Monsterverse films so far.
KingSalomonMMIV I don't think Godzilla is going to be a villain. I think he's going to be an instigator in the conflict. I think anybody who's seen the Playmates leaks can tell you who the real villain will be. And that's all I'm going to say about that.
JurassicKaiju14
I can't help but wonder if Godzilla is going to be treated as the antagonist here, seeing as how he's the one initially coming to Skull Island and intruding on Kong's domain.
I too think that that is what will begin the feud between Godzilla and Kong, but we can't really know for sure, at least not until the marketing for the movie starts happening. But if so, it would seem Godzilla could be the "villain" of the film (although I think the producers and makers of the movie won't make that the case). Who knows... this movie could go so many different ways.
Not too thrilled about the eyes, other than that I like it
YeOldFossil But see, we do know that there's gonna be a "bad guy" monster in this movie. Playmates let that slip a while back. So there's definitely going to be another threat outside of Godzilla and Kong's feud.
I'm pretty sure that Kong's motivation is going to stem from the other Titans beginning to converge on Skull Island, if the end credits of KOTM are any indication.
Also, a Titan civil war sounds like an awesome idea. :)
As long as the pacing is good, 105 minutes should be ok.
