Is it just me or does it kinda look like earlier concept art more than the final look from the film?

In my opinion, It’s not the best designed. The face is disproportionate and blues into itself

Godzilla Raids Again and Invasion of Astro-Monster were released in the UK last November via Criterion's set. You can find it here.

Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante are not available in the UK. You'll have to import The Return of Godzilla here, but unfortunately Godzilla vs. Biollante is out of print in North America. Furthermore, The Return of Godzilla is region locked and will not play on European players unless you have a region free Blu-ray player.

Godzilla 1985 is in a legal blackhole and will likely never be officially released again. There is no official release of the film other than the VHS release.

I don’t know, they might be out of country. You might need to order after quarantine.

I like subtle details and coloring. It’s like their fight is the end of the world, the colors seem like every thing is on fire. It’s also more reliant on dark green rather than blue like the poster. Sorry I just got into my artists side

For the record, Godzilla has MUCH more screen time than in 2014. I never said it better than 1954. I said it was the closest. The characters are hard to remember and thrown at you quickly because there is no time too, it works because it’s the government. Godzilla wasn’t originally supposed to have a personality. He was a walking Atom Bomb. As for my opinion on it being a master price, I don’t want to bore you, but I will say, it is one Godzilla film that Toho was able to be proud of in a long time. It had a US theatrical release, more than what some other millennium Godzilla movies can say. The reason it would be different would be what would they be reacting too? Maybe another disaster. Shin Godzilla’s stages represent different disasters. Kamata kun is a flood. Shinigawa kun is kindof the aftermath, plus the water returning to sea. Kamakura San is anything, from tornadoes to Atom Bombs. Yes 1954 is better, but please remember 1954 isn’t a Godzilla film really, it’s more like a film with Godzilla in it. It’s serious not focusing too much on Godzilla but these politically active characters. Many of the discussions during rampages are brief. Shin Godzilla opens up a world of new story possibilities now that we see different views on Godzilla in the government.

I honestly don’t think that this film is a masterpiece as everyone says because I found the characters to be really boring and uninteresting also I don’t like that their is way too much scenes with people in rooms having discussions and barely any focus on the destruction Godzilla is causing and the impact it has on the people who are caught up in it like the original 1954 film also I think that Godzilla has no personality cause in the first half of the film all he does is walk and that’s it like what is his motivations I feel like if you take Godzilla out of the film and I believe that it would be no different about the whole Japanese bureaucracy thing and I honestly believe that the original 1954 is a masterpiece and is still a better film than shin

Also not just mocking the Japanese government, but there is a balanced theme of patriotism in Japan. I view the movie as an allegory of Japan’s and America’s relationship. And Godzilla’s in it too.

@Tiamatzilla

Thank you for you’re decidedly strong opinion, I am not to offended. I see where you are coming from. I used to feel this way until I realized Godzilla has NEVER had scales, (except 2014 and GINO) The texture of the skin of Shodaigoji was designed after keloid scars from burns from the lucky dragon incident. I could go on and on about why Shin Godzilla is one of the best Godzilla movies, but that would be redundant. I appreciate shin Godzilla so much, because it is the closest Godzilla film to 1954 ( in my opinion), I was actually watching it a few minutes before I wrote this. I praise the design, because it reminds you of the effects of radiation and looks eerily like Shodaigoji. Plus the eyes just stare at you as it destroys the city.

I find it amusing, that somehow there is a conflict in a lot of the discussions. It’s nice that we can share opinions freely. I agree, I wouldn’t call these experimental, just when the show Golden Age was ending. Golden not meaning good, just Profitable.

I respect everyone's opinions, whether I agree with them or not. However, in defense of SG, the makers of that film were really doing exactly what the makers of the original 1954 version did, or almost any other G movie for that matter. When you look at the Godzilla franchise as a whole, you'll notice that Godzilla always represents one thing; whether he's a metaphor for the nuclear holocaust, or nature's response to imbalance, Godzilla is always there to point out mankind's blunders. They took the same approach in SG, but a little differently. That films mocks the flaws of the political government, and they use Godzilla in metaphorical ways to point that out. They may seem weird or different, but it's really quite brilliant if your willing to look at it from a new perspective. Godzilla doesn't have to be the exact same thing in every movie, as long as the creators honor the Japanese roots (which, in my humble opinion, I think they pulled off perfectly). I really respect the makers of SG for doing something very different from what the average Godzilla audience is always expecting from a G movie, and I wish more G fans were able to look at this film in the perspective of it's own context, instead of the context from your typical Godzilla film (if that makes sense).

Titan of Water,
No, I wasn't insinuating you were calling them bad. I just think that, while there is a shift in the series here, it wasn't particularly an experimental one--At least not in the more overt way that, say, Godzilla vs. Hedorah was.

Experimental doesn’t mean bad I just meant that they started changing genre, tone, and the like. The three of them are very different between each other and the previous six Showa Films. Sea Monster seems to be an action adventure movie with a splash of comedy. Son of Godzilla acts like a childrens/Disney movie, and that’s not necessarily bad depending on who you ask. Destroy All Monsters seems to go back to the themes of the first six. That’s why I call it the experimental age.

"they should have used the original Gojira (1954)"

Man, could you imagine if they did bring the original 1954 film back for a special theatrical run? I'd totally pay to see that.

Interesting name since I don't find any of these particularly experimental--I find the 1970s to be more experimental by virtue of the cut budgets. The filmmakers had to get creative and weird to do something new/fresh--Or hell even finish the story.

These films, by and large, are fairly well made. Son of Godzilla is an underrated gem and I'd call Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster one of the best in the series. Easy.

Destroy All Monsters, by virtue of it being the first Godzilla film I ever saw.

Because it's a great movie, it won countless awards and was a massive box office success in Japan.

Won't let fix the comments so I look like a chode but any Godzilla was better than broken jaw statue shin. Wasn't even Reptillian with a face on its tail shitting walking dead. Like did these dudes even know who Godzilla is or did they just get forced into using his shadow to blow Destroyah?

Why? That movie was the worst and it makes me puke.  I made a way better Godzilla than that.

G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumMothra Trilogy

The second film has a myriad of problems, from the design work to the slow pacing, the abysmal special effects work - the fact it has only one primary and relatively cheap miniature set - the horrid acting (though none of them had a lot to work with, granted) - the painfully hamfisted environmental message - There's a difference between the children's films of the mid-70s and absolute kiddie-fodder. This is the latter.

My main problem is the weird furby thing in the second film. It’s... I can’t find the right words

Reply
G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumMothra Trilogy

I consider them among the worst movies of the kaiju genre. The second film in particular is almost unwatchable.

Now, based on that curve, I find the third film the most enjoyable. Koichi Kawakita did the effects for the first two movies and they were quite bland. Kenji Suzuki took over by the third movie and his effects had a new feel to it. I don't think they were particularly great effects by any means, but his techniques breathed some much needed fresh air into the trilogy's visuals. (Especially after watching 10 years of Kawakita's work.)

And no, the Mothra trilogy has nothing to do with the Heisei Godzilla series or the original 1961 Mothra. The monsters are much smaller in the Mothra films and the trilogy stands alone in its own continuity.

Shin G.Godzilla ForumLet's Talk Megalon - Honest Monster Opinions

Comparing him to Gigan seems... Odd. Apt, but off. What else could really be asked for? The best bug design imo, Gamera's Legion, wouldn't come out for another 23 years.

Looking at Megalon as its own thing, not comparable to Gigan (remember Godzilla vs Megalon didn't initially include Godzilal), I like the design. It manages to feel familiar without rehashing elements. Drill hands create enough difference from Gigan, plus Megalon actually has ranged abilities in the movies beyond posters. It's solid, stands up better than many, many Ultra Kaiju anyway.

im a bit torn on this debacle, on one side, you got two franchises with a long track record (altho Bond would be longer due to Fleming stories being from the 40s), but on the other, there is a posibility of GvK being overshadowed

Altho Spectre wasn't exactly as warmly received as something like say Skyfall or Goldeneye (mostly due to the giant plot holes and retcons regarding Retcon Boi AKA Blofeld, that affect Casino, Quantum and Skyfall plots )

Both can end up overshadowing the other, either because of the internet making another Birds of Prey VS Sonic thing with these two (Making GvK big while attacking NTTD using the controversies it had even before the first trailer released)
