I really should've justified my reasons for liking 2019's Godzilla: King of The Monsters a long time ago.  But anyways, this is belated.  So anyways, I should give a short consensus first:

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this movie a solid 7.

Now, for my consensus:

Godzilla: King of the Monsters doesn't match the greatness of Kong: Skull Island, but that doesn't mean it's bad.  The story (while mediocre) is ambitious, the family drama element is a great touch, the visual effects and cinematography are stunning, and the cast gives mostly solid performances in badly written characters, with Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes) standing out as probably the only star to get an actually good human character in the film.  Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah get great designs, and some good (but reptitive) fights.

But now, I need to go deeper into this movie.  So here we go....

First, I should point out what drags this movie down.  What exactly drags the movie down is too.  many.  human.  characters.  If they chopped half of the supporting cast off, then it would work.  But a lot of the supporting characters say basically only a few things and they aren't needed.  Most of the main characters and main supporting characters either stand gawking at the titular monsters or pulling off really stupid decisions.  The only human character that amounts to anything is Millie Bobby Brown's Madison Russell but we'll get to her.  Another thing is that even though the fights are cool, but are repetitive as it's the same thing.  Over and over and over again.  And the third act drags.  I'm not kidding.  And Mothra x Godzilla is weird.  Also, Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) is the worst human character in a Godzilla movie.  Ever.

Next, the good things.  So Madison Russell is the only good human character in this movie and actually makes better decisions than everyone else because of course.  Then the CGI and cinematography is captial A-Amazing and the titan noises (besides Ghidorah) are well-crafted.  Even though the third act drags, it's a cool battle and it shows the power of visual effects.  And the story while mediocre is ambitious and the family drama element is solid.  And it also does a great job of setting up Godzilla Vs. Kong.

But anyways, this movie gets a lot of things right.  and a lot of things wrong.  But hopefully Godzilla Vs. Kong is the massive hit WB needs and this cinematic universe will continue.

But yeah overall, I think Godzilla: KotM is a good movie.

And now I'm never going to watch it ever again because it got worse the 2nd time I watched it.

That's all folks! Upvote and comment below...

Emma could have been a great villain. Instead, they ruined her character with a single move: redemption. Her redemption scene was completely unnecessary, and she should have remained the crazed person she was. Set in her ways until the very end. The soundtrack and monster designs are the only 2 good aspects of this film, but even that doesn't make the film worth watching as you can go on YouTube and listen to the tracks or support the composer by purchasing them. The execution of action sequences was poor. Even if we didnt cut away to the humans each time, the way the monsters actually fought was so boring. Every time we cut back to the action, they would do a basic swipe or tackle then move away again. Is that really worth it??

Redemption is often a good character arc, admittedly t could have been better.

Gvk, in my opinion, would've been a perfect redemption opportunity for emma as she realizes apex has gone too far with Mecha g(realizing that apex never truly cared for the environment) and helps her daughter to stop it. It would've also been a good opportunity to expand on the relationship between the mother and daughter as they spend the last half of the movie trying to deactivate or hamper mechagodzilla together.. But.....:(

Gman you misunderstand me, I'm all for opinions but you constantly hound on why the Monstervese is inferior, I get it, I used to be like you and constantly hound how terrible AVP (2004) was compared to the rest of the Alien series. You can find my posts on this very website for that example

your welcome sonictiger, the old godzilla movies will take sometime to get used with people running around fighting in monster suits it gets better in the Heisei series onwards since the suits get better looking (in my opinion anyways).

Yeah, I've started out as a huge Jurassic Park fan back in the early 90's. My first exposure to Godzilla was a cartoon called Godzilla Power Hour. Then my first live action Godzilla movie was Godzilla vs Monster Zero aka Godzilla vs The Astro Monster, only have seen Power Hour I was confused on the storyline but had fun watching it because it was a monster movie.

My second Godzilla movie was Godzilla1998, then some odd years later my uncle sent my the entire godzilla series he tapped. I finally decided to watch them to build up hype for Godzilla 2014 from Godzilla 1954 (well the King of the Monsters! verison) all the way to Godzilla vs Destoroyah (1995) I havent got to finish the rest of the series since my VHS player died after playing the first couple minutes of Godzilla 2000.

When/if you do go on a Toho Godzilla marathon some of the latter Showa movies can be a drag to watch with all the stock footage you'll be seeing, mostly the reuse of Godzilla and Pals fighting King Ghidorah but its worth it because after the Terror of Mechagodzilla is the first Heisei Godzilla, I liked most of the Heisei series except for Godzilla vs King Ghidorah.

I would also try out Mothra (1961) and Rodan (1958) to get some backstory on those two monsters and maybe Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster but that one is optional

Xenotaris,
Once again, you continue to misconstrue things you don't fully understand. For example, you're only looking for me hounding the Monsterverse at this point. If you've been paying attention, I've only been responding when asked about it and when I'm called into question (like in this thread). I'm even tired of talking about the Monsterverse as I feel I've explained why it's inferior in spades. No need to be a broken record unless asked--But we all are.

Thus, I will not refrain from stating opinions when asked and when the conversation is open to it. If someone asks, "Should the Monsterverse Continue after Godzilla vs. Kong," then that opens it up to those who don't think it should as well. If someone tells me, "Admit it's ambitious," and I disagree, I'm going to.

If you can't accept negative backlash, maybe don't ask the questions.

I'm not attacking your opinion. Its okay if the MonsterVerse isn't your cup of tea but don't overkill your disdain for the cinematic universe. It feels like no matter what hollywood does it can never please certain members of this fandom and a lot of new comers are driven away by like minded hardcore fans for liking the Legendary's Series instead of Toho's Series. Its deja vu of 1998 all over again.

It's like saying, "don't overkill your love for something" as well though. Some people get tired of hearing it.

"Its deja vu of 1998 all over again."

It's really not.

I'm just saying from experience when you get excessive with your passions people get turned off to the things you like, especially when you put down the spin-off or adaptation they like of what you like.

Like I said I tend to be an elitist when it comes to the Alien series when regards to that awful AVP movie directed by Paul W S Anderson or the Disney run of Star Wars or how the Terminator movies haven't been good since Terminator 2 or how people keep comparing Camp Cretaceous as being on the same serious level as the Live Action Jurassic Park movies, I personally find Camp Cretaceous to be very childish and flanderize many aspects of the franchise but that is a topic for another discussion.

Honestly gman, it’s really annoying every time you decide to pound the MonsterVerse for being bad or “inferior to the other movies besides ‘98”

Any positive thoughts about these movies?

I'm just quickly going to throw my own 2 cents into this discussion. Something I'll always say and will say again is that there is a difference between a GOOD movie and a movie you LIKE with this movie being a prime example of this.

Do I think this is a structurally and objectively good movie? No, far from it. The characters are a bit bland with motivations which don't make a lot of sense and which are for the most part pretty forgettable. You are supposed to care when the Mother (spoilers) dies, but you just don't care. There are likely other problems, but I'm just naming the big one right now.

But having said this you would probably think I either hate/dislike this movie or I think it's alright, but I love this movie. One of the main reasons being that this movie was clearly made by people who respects, understand and love this franchise and its characters. My mom who has never seen a Godzilla movie in her life can name the 4 main Kaiju and their individual personalities. When you watch the behind the scenes where they talk about the designs, you see how much thought went into every little aspact, making for some of my favorite/definitive designs.

I have so many fond memories from this movie. From the action with Rodan's awakening and the final battle to the beauty of Mothra's hatching with her original theme. I know it's fan service and there's a lot of it, but I've always loved that. This is the same reason why Ready Player One is one of my favorite movies from the last few years. Some my call it a cheap thrill, but little things like that make me feel like a kid again watching these movies for the first time.

To quickly conclude this, I love the Monsterverse and KotM specifically, but that doesn't mean they are "good" movies. Everyone will have their own experience and opinions and that's oké. For every terrible movie there will always be a person who likes it, it's discussing why they think that way which makes fanbases like ours. At the end of the day, if everyone had the same opinion, what would be the point of discussing anything?

Long live the king...

sonictiger,
I do. And I've made them known in other threads. I think Kong: Skull Island is a solid movie, probably the best of the Monsterverse. And the best thing about King of the Monsters was it made Godzilla '14 look a lot better. Also have to give props to Bear McCreary's score--Which is probably the best score for a Godzilla film since 2003.

And I was going to praise it for getting other people to watch the other films, but if it's not doing that then I won't.

@SonicPanthera tigris

I don’t understand why you say that you like the film, but won’t watch it again because it keeps getting worse. I rewatch films I enjoy multiple times. If it is a consequence of other peoples opinions, I’d rather you rewatch again with a clean slate and find out what you like and don’t like. Then again, I don’t know if I’m just trying to enforce my experiences on you, so ultimately it’s up to you.

@Gman

Please understand I am not trying to offend you. You don’t have to bash SonicTiger for not wanting to watch older films. Maybe this is not your intention and I’m misreading this, “And I was going to praise it for getting other people to watch the other films, but if it's not doing that then I won't.” If I misread this please tell me. But doing that just incites more anger.

Like I said (maybe, I can’t remeber if I said it yet.) saying things online is tricky. You can’t really convey emotion.

I am not trying to be rude... I’m just tired of the fighting, and  when I first found this website , there wasn’t bickering that was obvious to me. I barely know anyone who is a Godzilla fan in real life. I’m just getting sad that this is happening.
I am not trying to blame you. It’s just frustrating to me.

can’t online communication be kinder? Why can’t I voice my words, In the way I mean them? It’s just I wish that this forum would stay on talking about cool things, not dividing the community.

I mean no I’ll feeling.
