Title will be changed when Official title is released

Yes! This is the official Toho Godzilla 2016 discussion thread, to stop clutter, here you will discuss everything you have to say about the Revival of the Japanese Godzilla! It can be anything from, his design, to the plot of the film.

Here is what i have to say on certain questions: "What will the plot be about?" I think it will be a solo Godzilla film, maybe even a remake of 1954 since they have never done that before.

"What will Godzilla look like?"I think he will be broad and intimidating like Heisei, yet lean and Muscular like Final wars.

So thats my questions, you discuss anything you want about the film now! Power to the King!

Good grief.

^I think that project is long dead.

One can only hope, but judging by the fact Banno seems obsessed with his Hedorah sequel with his original venture with the movie that was supposed to be Godzilla 3d to the MAX and the fact he brought it up not long before the release of G2014 of his idea of a hedorah sequel. I doubt he'll ever drop his idea of making that movie in some way. Hopefully toho doesn't let him though, he seems like the type of director who looks at his past work and finds it to be amazing(as is apparent by him continuously trying to follow it up with movies that seem similar in plot or possibly even more goofy) so I doubt he'd change anything to what he did with his original Godzilla movie.

Last I heard he was trying to develop his idea through Gamera this time. But the sites in which he was trying to promote the project seems to have gone down:

Good to know everyone realizes all you'll get with Banno is a Godzilla vs Hedorah 2.0

Ok, Banno ruined Godzilla. Technacially i wouldn't mind seeing hedorah again, however, if he some how works with Gamera, he will find a way to ruin him as well.

I never felt that Banno ruined Godzilla, but I know Godzilla vs. Hedorah is a polarizing movie so maybe arguing the point is moot.

I often wondered if Hedorah's quick demise in Final Wars was due to some left over sentiment from Toho. I doubt it, but he really did have a cameo compared to other monsters in that film.

@BigBadBen:

Yes! The Atomic Breath. It should be destructive, and broad. I like the one from GMK. It need not be 'scientifically plausible'. The atomic breath, like the monster itself, just needs to be fantastic and impressively portrayed. The 1954 and 1984 roars are, to me, the best. I, too, hope that the film is dark and atmospheric. It will have been well made if it takes us back to, or places us in, whatever period it takes place. I would love to see a sequence that takes place in 1954, and have those scenes make you feel that you're actually there.

And now, it's 2015. It's time to start making this film. I'm looking forward to any and all news from Japan about Godzilla, the King of the Monsters.

I hope that the design is classic, a kind of homage to the original film, but updated in a way that lends it an undeniable believability and makes it convincing to the point that it's real to the viewers. I would love to see other references to Gojira, nuanced, but lovingly placed.

I'm going to look into plastering these words under every single post on the forum.

It will be interesting indeed if this new Toho Godzilla movie will be better than the legendary sequel, what will happen then I wonder?

^ Trust me it wont. No matter how fans see it in there eye's, nostalgia, homages. Legendary is a 160 million dollar full CGI rendered film, compared to Japanese Tokusatsu.

Basically what i am trying to say is, the film may be better in terms of story and nostalgia but it can never be the, "Better film."

Good grief.

^I think that's a pretty narrow minded statement for a laundry list of reasons. Especially since Toho already has plenty of movies under their belt that are "better films" regardless of nostalgia and Legendary has yet to make a truly standout movie in the series.

The day that budget and CGI = better movie is the day we all resign ourselves to Transformers films being the best movies in the world alongside Avatar and Green Lantern.

I have to agree I don't think better = more money thrown into it. Storywise the pacing of legendary wasn't great, and character wise it was pretty weak. Having these big factors be under par is not something a "better movie" would have.

@Gman2887,

You may not know it but, i am patting you on the back and internet shaking your damn hand right now. I 100% agree with what you just said. Toho doesn't have to worry about making better films than G14, they already have at least 20 movies made that are far better.

Jamaal i whole heartedly agree with this statement. I think all of us want that suit that will make us stick our tongues in checks and slaps us in the face with "Wow! That suit is amazing" vibe. I will be praying for the best results for this film.

Let us not forget about hearing those massive footsteps guys. The original 54, 84, and 91 films we heard those footsteps every time Godzilla took a step.

@GG,

This would be the results of Toho's Godzilla and Legendary's Godzilla fighting each other.

BigBadBen:

This is what I'm hoping for. I think Toho is up to it. There are  several things that can be 'proved' by the next Toho-produced Godzilla film. Some of them relate to the ongoing (apparently) practical vs. digital debate. I believe that there is a place for digital effects. But, they are not the end all and be all of visual/special effects. No matter how well done, and touched up, CGI, by itself, has a coldness, a distance to it that cannot be done away with. It must be this way, because of it's very nature. I recently watched Mosua tai Gojira (Mothra vs. Godzilla), perhaps the best of the Godzilla series sequels. And it is better than the Legendary film, to me. It's fifty years old. The VFX and SPFX are accomplished, mainly, through suits and miniatures. And, it is, simply, beautiful. There is a warmth to it, a stylistic beauty that cannot be replicated digitally. And I'm not against the use of digital effects. Like I said, they have a place. But, the tokusatsu effects have an element, an innate quality that people can relate to and experience that is natural and immediate at the same time. It'd like watching kabuki or bunraku. What Toho must do is integrate this art form with digital effects in a way that speaks to contemporary tastes so that an adequate level of realism is achieved, while at the same time retaining the charm and artistry of the traditional, practical effects.

^Amazingly said Jamaal!

Also, another key factor is that Eiji Tsuburaya didn't need CGI to make the first Godzilla film seem real, his special effects made it happen. Kids these days just don't accept black and white movies nor even have anything to say about special effects unless it is CGI. Because of Tsuburaya's special effects and Harou Nakajima's suit acting made the movie come to life and it felt very real. The thing that gets me when it comes to this franchise is the simple fact that people can't look behind the suits, minatures, acting, etc. They can not look the monster in the eye and extinguish the fire in the pandora's box that opened up on August 6, 1945. Godzilla is a message to all to extinguish that fire. If we the fans or even the non fans can't look this creature in the eye and stop the usage of H-bombs, then like what the magnificent Ishiro Honda said. "We are all naive."

I get that its your opinion but I think (Repeat I!) think legendary Godzilla will win because of his sheer size and strength.

BigBadBen,
I don't know about an exact number of movies that are better than Godzilla '14-- Since I put the 2014 film somewhere in the middle of the pack I'd give Toho the benefit of the doubt with 12-15 films of superior craft, writing and creativity.

That being said, I've long grown bored of trying to list the series from greatest to least. They all start running together in specific blocks of quality somewhere and they become different enough that it's hard to compare. I like to think of Godzilla '14 as a movie hanging somewhere with the Kiryu films and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. The Kiryu Saga, Destroyah and Godzilla '14 are all well loved for reasons people see on the surface, but they also have extremely damaging issues that yank them from being great movies.

Very good point, BigBadBen:

The message of the early films was a major aspect of their greatness, and what made them so moving. The narrative in the early Toho Godzilla series, indeed, in their other scifi films as well, was integral to their beauty, like in the Mysterians.

Speaking of atomic heat rays: the one from Godzilla 1984 (Return of Godzilla) gets at least an honorable mention. I felt that the one in the Legendary film could have been more powerful. The one in Toho Godzilla 2016 should be to blast through things. I would like to see the dorsals light up, and then stay lit, like in Godzilla 2000 Millennium. And then: Boom! And, as BigBadBen said, the footsteps should thunder. That effect should be even more imposing given today's sound equipment. The theater should shake when Godzilla walks. Speaking of walking, Godzilla should move with purpose, like he's after something. At times, he seemed a little aimless in G'84. And he shouldn't be following birds. Godzilla should be obsessed with what he's angry at, and it should be reflected in his gait. After any initial confusion which may result from exposure to The Bomb, he should be a vehicle of destruction after that, unstoppable and relentless.

One more thing: the illuminated dorsals, like the ray, should be bluish-white when lit up, with that crackling, electrical sound like in GMK. And the illumination should be so bright, that it nearly turns night into day in the area it occurs. I feel the film could benefit, horror and danger-wise, from a way to measure or demonstrate the radiation caused by Godzilla's presence. I mean, Tsujimori should not have lived very long after riding Godzilla in Godzilla X Megaguirus. Hopefully with more production time, Toho can be more careful about things like this.

BigBadBen- Thats not entirely true, you see we haven't even seen Godzilla's true power yet your basing Toho's winning when 2014 hasn't even gotten a chance to show off his skills and from what we have seen so far he already is an incredible adversary. See your basing Toho winning off of a personal Bias, i have done the same but it has to be equally fair it cant just be that 94 owns 2014. I respect your opinion but 2014 has a very fair chance of winning against any Godzilla incarnation except burning..

Good grief.

I guess I'm what you'd call a 'hardcore OG,' but, I liked the Legendary Godzilla, a lot. The filmmakers showed a lot of love and respect for the genre and the subject.

It's just that a lot of fans would like to see a new, traditional tokusatsu Godzilla made in Japan. That Toho is making a Godzilla film just seems so right.

So, I'm looking forward to both films. I will interesting to see what Legendary and Gareth Edwards do with King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan.
