SPARKZILLA14 - What an interesting topic! Hmm, for me, I'd have to say that the Godzilla which is most accurate to the '54 mythology (unadulterated destruction) is either the one from The Return of Godzilla or Godzilla 2000. Both of those iterations struck me as being extremely frightening and uncompromising in their efforts to punish mankind! This is a very fun notion to consider! Thank you ever so much for presenting it! :)
BBB, the official plot synopsis says that the spirits of WWII soldiers possessed and reanimated the remains of the previous Godzilla from 1954. So, though not "fully" the original, he still isn't an entirely unique Godzilla separate from the original.
^Ah, i forgot about that part. Haha! Thanks for the reminder.
Either way though, godzilla in Gmk was almost unstoppable like 54. Which is a good thing.

@GorillaGodzilla - Ah yeah, OK. If you say so...
You can have your Godzilla. I'll have mine. Thank you.
The more I think on this topic the harder it is to depict which could be alternate #1.
I'm down to three when it comes to this, this is why I started the topic because it is hard to just pick one.
The three I have are:
G84
G vs Biollante
And
G2000
I don't know if "ulitimate" Godzilla movie is the best wording on my part. But other than the original I'm going to have to side with both Koldwarkid and Durp. Mothra vs. Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante are two of the most well-rounded, beautifully made and straight forward Godzilla adventures in the series. They both have interesting ideas and themes without going overboard on other elements (mysticism, Black hole guns, time travel) while also providing audiences with some of the most iconic and effective portrayls of Godzilla himself.
I don't necessarily think this makes them exactly the #2 and #3 best movies of the series, but they tend to represent some of the most well made textbook qualities of a Godzilla film.
Going by greatness and not favoritism, I consider Mothra vs. Godzilla, GMK, and Godzilla vs. Biollante to be the best films aside from the original.
"When man falls into conflict with nature, monsters are born." - Professor Hayashida, The Return of Godzilla
Well I just watched Mothra vs Godzilla a few days ago and looking at it objectively it's a very well paced and overall good movie. Outside of a few things I think it's one of the best movies in the series but unfortunately I find it has just too many to be the next best one. For instance in the fight against Mothra some of the extreme shaky close ups are almost on the same level as when Godzilla fights the giant condor, and you have no idea what's going on. Then there's the school children stranded that just comes out of nowhere because it seems they ran out of things for the main characters to do so they just pulled something out. Besides those few things though, and maybe other smaller things I think the movie is very good, it also have one of the fan favorite godzilla suits and many iconic shots from showa.
^I tend to agree that plotting wise Mothra vs. Godzilla's final arc with the school children seems to be fairly tacked on. It's a fairly slow third act and one of those things that truly hold it back from being perfect. That being said, I find an equal amount of little things holding back Godzilla vs. Biollante. It plays the typical Heisei sin of having too many underdeveloped characters (a couple who were supposed to be lead characters and end up being the most bland of the lot. Sounds familiar...) and some truly out of place music. It borderline ruins some scenes. I'll never understand why Sugiyama flip-flops from sweeping John Williams-esque cues to hair band rock music...
And for others who mention GMK and perhaps Monster Zero, (Not sure if anyone has mentioned the latter) I want to at least confirm that I consider these two movies some of the series' best not because they're standard and straight forward Godzilla films that might better define a tried-and-true "ultimate" Godzilla flick, but because they took risks. Both GMK and Monster Zero are standout movies that twist the franchise and ultimately work. They're not your typical Godzilla fare.
I would consider other movies as textbook "Ultimate Godzilla" films, before I added the fusion of, "Godzilla film crossed with toku invasion story" or "Godzilla crossed with feudal Japanese mythology". Or with Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, "Godzilla crossed with time travel".
I guess that's just a taste difference since I found the score of Godzilla vs Biollante to be one of my favorite. I can agree that it does goes through the typical heisei route of having too many characters, but at the same time I find a lot of it's characters to be some of the best and most interesting, and since there's so many even if Asuka and Kazuhito are boring at times there are just as many scenes that include either Gondo, Miki, or Shiragami who all bring enough to the table in their scenes to counteract the other two.
And there-in lies the problem, although Shiragami, Miki and Gondo are interesting, Asuka and Kazuhito were top billing characters we were to presumably follow. Personally, I think the arc's main character is Shiragami, but he doesn't do a whole lot after Biollante's birth... The lack of a true main character throws the movie off balance and suffers the who's-the-lead? syndrome that Star Wars Episode 1 carries. There's plenty to make up for it, but it's quite a muddled affair. I'm not entirely sure whose journey it truly is.
G84 was a rip off in a small way with G54. Let me explain, as so many fans and audience members have said that G54 is the best of all and toho wanted to try to some what remake G54 but with the enviroments that happened with the cold war, which of course did not work.

By the way, even though it really isn't a fan favorite it still has a serious tone to it, that being godzilla raids again 1955. This is the one godzilla film that doesn't get that much attention.

G84 has a fantastic concept. Godzilla in the cold war is a spectacular marriage and the nuclear element was very strong in the film. But the characters are as flat as it gets. Unlike most Heisei characters they're right in the thick of the action, but they don't really become anything out of it. They pedal through the motions to get to the end.
One of the most compelling things about Godzilla, daikaiju eiga in general, is the effect monsters have on characters and vice-versa. If they can't nail that down either I can't really consider it a top tier movie.
^Which is why monster zero is so dang good. I completly agree there my friend. Yeah G84 has the right concept, but with characters not doing what would be a good job in acting.....*facepalm*
