MemberMothra LarvaeMar-23-2014 8:12 AMI feel a sense of regret that this design never saw the light of day. Given the anticipation for the upcoming Godzilla film would it not be rather cool if S.H Monsterarts ( or somebody else) make high detail figures of America's previous "Godzillas", even this spectacular design that was never seen on film?

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-23-2014 9:18 AMA nice design. Shame that they used the "Zilla" design instead and didn't include the "Gryphon" enemy. The history of the Godzilla franchise might've been very different otherwise....

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-23-2014 9:21 AMI think if zilla never happened this movie never might have been happening

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-23-2014 9:44 AMI thought it was great design before the Legendarygoji was even made but after looking back at this one. There are some things I nitpick. His colour should be darker, his feet now look wierd to me but that might be because I love the Legendarygoji design but the rest looks great. I would rather use this design in Godzilla 1998

MemberBaragonMar-23-2014 9:58 AMWithout a doubt, this new film would never be happening the way it is (or at all) if it were not for the 1998 Godzilla. The pressure and desire to do it right is what has been driving this movie forward, and its more than likely that drive would not exist if Zilla never happened.
That said, this maquette is simply stunning! Stan Winston can always be counted on to create something amazing, and respectful. It would have been cool if this design had been used, but, as Free5 and Treveasy pointed out, we probably wouldnt be getting this film if it had been.
Does anybody else notice how similar this design is to Legendary's in a lot of ways? The chest is very similar, and the arms are almost identical! You have to wonder if they referenced this design and what it did right while designing the 2014 Godzilla! :)

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-23-2014 10:27 AMIndeed. In a way, we should be grateful for the 1998 film. As an individual monster, I have much affection for Zilla's design.

1. There was a vote awhile back on which monsters would the fans like to see next in the S.H. Monsterarts line. Zilla made 3rd place, but nothing is set in stone. heres link:

2. Where did this Godzilla design come from exactly? I don't remember seeing it.

AdminGodzillaMar-23-2014 11:04 AMSeeing as the S.H. Monsterarts did release the unused Godzilla 2000 maquette as a figure, I don't see why making one out of this design is outside the realm of possibility.

It is a design for the scrapped 1994 American film made by Stan Winston.

MemberTitanosaurusMar-23-2014 12:19 PMOh, okay...Wait! There was going to be a 1994 American film. I don't see how they could have pulled that off. Godzilla was fighting Spacegodzilla that same year.

Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II was originally supposed to be the last Heisei Godzilla film. But Sony/Tristar scrapped their 1994 film. So Toho went ahead and made two more Godzilla movies while Sony/Tristar went back to the drawing board and created GINO.
The 1994 film was to feature Stan Winston effects, was going to be directed by Jan de Bont (Speed, Twister) and feature a monster called the Gryphon which Godzilla would do battle with.
Sony decided the movie would cost too much so they scrapped the idea. Much of the storyline, however, seems to have inspired parts of Gamera: Guardian of the Universe. So you can get the gist in that film.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-23-2014 10:16 PMThat is sad. Can't believe they turned that design down. But the again, if they didn't use the Zilla design then this new Godzilla movie probably wouldn't exist.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-24-2014 4:41 AMSad that movie never got made, I often wonder how different things would have been if it had.
I could see the film havin' stop motion, suitmation and animatronics. It would have at least been a nice looking film.
Plus Godzilla being the good guy gets a thumbup from me.
Either way, I love the proportions of this Godzilla-- if you look at the concept art, this Godzilla was going to have the same cat-like reflexes as GINO, but with an actual atomic breath.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-24-2014 4:53 AMI would buy it, just to get a closer look at this design. To hold it in my hands. And ask the heavens why we didnt get this thing.
