MUTO Monsters are Inspired by some TOHO Monsters

This is a really good interview and Gareth Edwards gets little deep in the interview about what GODZILLA really represents. 

The Interview claims that Gareth Edwards did get inspiration from TOHO monsters but the designs are pretty much orginal.
