A question for the Gill Haters

I don't mean for this to come off as MY opinion, but rather as a summary of the objections I've read. 

I think the main FEAR is that IF he has gills, then it's going to be used as a vulnerability or a kryptonite in combat. People already have these visions in their head of some military guy going "Aim for the GILLS" and then the army goes all GMK on Godzilla's ass. Or some enemy monster hooking Godzilla by the gills and throwing him around.

I really don't think the main issue has anything to do w/ Godzilla's ability to breath in different environments. The bigger issue, is that it potentially gives Godzilla a 'weak spot' that can be attacked. 

Even if he has gills, I don't personally think they will make a plot point of it in the movie. Unfortunately there really is no way to alleviate that concern until the movie comes out. 

In terms of my actual opinion, I personally don't think Godzilla has gills just because I really haven't seen anything that looks like gills in any of the pictures or shots of him. EVERYTHING that I've seen, that people haved called a 'gill' just looks like part of his scales or armor plates to me. 

But it's not like I don't believe they are gills because I'm somehow opposed to Godzilla having them. If it turns out they are gills, I personally don't really give a damn. I don't see any problem with Godzilla having gills. It really doesn't change anything about the monster or the plot to me.....unless the movie chooses to make a big deal out of it.....which would be stupid...and that's what has people fretting...the concern about what the movie MIGHT do with it if he actually does have gills....

But I don't see Gareth Edwards being that dumb....if Godzilla has them they will probably just be mentioned once, off hand by a scientist or something to explain how Godzilla can stay under water for so long, and that will be the end of it, if there is anything at all.

I just don't think he has gills because it doesn't look like it to me. That's pretty much it.

Ok, first, It is a movie...so I don't understand why we have been so spoiled into thinking that everything in this movie has to be realistic to the point where it doesn't make sense, and second, why are people still nit-picking???? My god, he looks like Godzilla, can't we all just quit looking the gift horse in the mouth and be happy with what we have???  I really think that people are reading WAY too far into this and are ruining the movie for themselves.

I actually like the gills. They make him look really cool.

I love the gills. I think it is a great new feature to add to the big G. Everyone has their own opinion, wether someone hates the gills or someone else likes the gills. We all have to accept it. Personally, giving him gills actually makes a lot of sense since he spends most of his time underwater. People just need to stop being so picky and stop complaining and enjoy his new design.

@Gojira2K, I agree and it explains how Godzilla can survive underwater for so long.  And if people are worried about them being a weak spot, here's a point I have to make: Multiple Nuclear blasts couldn't kill him, what makes you think artillery fired at his gills could kill him?

Here's why I don't like the gills....Because Godzilla NEVER HAD THEM. Now, I know that this is a new design, and it's great. What I've seen so far, I really like. In fact, I'm bordering on being overjoyed. But Godzilla just doesn't need gills. I suppose (if they are indeed gills,) that they will be worked into the story somehow, like Godzilla has been hybernating down in the ocean's depths for some length of time or something. But whatever. It just seems unnecassary. And quite frankly, if you're going to make him look like a dinosaur, or at least clearly reptilian, then the gills just seem out of place. I've said before, I have no desire for Godzilla to be realistic per say, but the gills just don't look like they belong on such an animal. 

And to Kaijugroupie84, your heart is in the right place. But, my friend, we are intitled to nitpick if we want. We are intitled to our opinions, and it is part of the experience leading up to the movie to discuss them. It's fun. And let's face it, if you happen to not like some aspect of the design, or don't like it at all, you are not going to convince yourself that it's good just so the movie wont be ruined. It's going to dissapoint you. Believe me, I tried that bit in '98. It didn't work. I mean no disrespect to you, but if you don't like discussing the design, then don't. I, as an illustrator and a lifelong fan, enjoy it.

Okay, so at first i will be honset i was a little like(what?) when i saw gills, but ive gotten over it. GODZILLA is godzilla after all, dosent matter to me in the end...

Godzilla needs gills to breath, swim, and sleep underwater people, jeeze if u dont like that realisticness, then go back to Toho movies dude

@Dragonlord Tevin, that's what I'm saying, he needs gills to do all that, and I for one could never figure out how the Toho Godzilla survived underwater, I guess he could just hold his breath a REALLy long time haha.

Toho just doesnt study well enough to know how to do things, and im sorry if its sounding like im hating on Toho, but im not really, its just that its their fault that people dont even like Godzilla and that we g fans have to love Godzilla but be bothered from negative perspectives

I'll be honest I didn't even know this was a thing.  I'm gonna have to go with Madison on this one, I see no gills, and even if he has them, who cares. I understand some people don't like it from an aesthetic perspective, but I don't know about it being a weakness.  Seems like people are jumping the gun a bit here, worrying over things that they shouldn't really be worrying about. Also seeing as there's no way to alleviate these fears until the movie comes out, I don't see a reason to get worked up (not to mention its not really clear as to whether or not he even has gills...)

lets talk about realism:

-Zombies can walk and they are dead.

-Superman absorbs his energy from the sun and he is not a plant.

-Batman can fall off from the top of a building and survive.

-Vampires can have sex and they dont have pulse.

-Godzilla is an dinosaur who survive the massive extintion and the ice age, inmune to NUCLEAR attaks, can swim in magma, fights against a butterfly goddes AND it exist.

c´mon people, we all know that this movie will be realistic, but is a MOVIE, not a documentary...

Need I remind people that whales, dolphins, and sea turtles live in the ocean and do not have gills. Lets throw crocodilians in there as well, as they spend much of their time in water. I guess someone should tell them that they are going to drown. Also, I should hope that Godzilla should not have his atomic breath, because we want "realism" and that has never and could never happen, correct? Traditionally, Godzilla is a dino. Is there any evidence that dino's had gills? Does Godzilla even closely resemble an amphibian, fish, or mollusk? Does Batman carry a gun because police do? After all, they are all crimefighters. If Batman were "realistic," he would have no doubt been shot to pieces early in his carreer. Oh wait, he knows karate. I digress.....

Godzilla never had gills, doesn't need them, and they look out of place. Perhaps they serve some other purpose, such as with his atomic breath (which we have already established, while being awesome, is completely outlandish.)  Or perhaps he uses them for hybernating in the deep oceans for years on end, which totally makes sense for such a large animal. Then fine. Whatever. Let us accept everything about a 350 foot, mutated, nuclear fire breating monster, except that he could swim to the surface of water to breath through his nostrils.

And let me add, Just beacuse it looks like the filmakers are doing alot of great things, doesn't mean they've done everything great. Valid criticisms can lead to positive change. In this case, criticisms may be premature, but as I've said, it's fun to discuss elements of the film as they trickle out. But fans should voice their opinions. That's why we are getting what looks like a potentially great Godzilla film and not bad sequels to Godzilla '98.

First off, no one is hating. They're speaking their opinions. Just like you're doing so. I don't see gills, I don't think he has gills, please present a picture of Godzilla where you can clearly see gills. Until then, he doesn't have gills.

Either way, gills or not, I also don't see him being slowed down anytime soon beyond a giant MUTO attack. As I've said earlier, you can get a creature that size without breaking the laws of physics, can give it exotic abilities without breaking the laws of physics, and even create ways for it to swim and remain not sinking into the ground all the time given its proportions and size without breaking the laws of physics, but relying on air is one problem that can't be solved by way of any real means, so just lower the importance of the substance through self-sufficiency in other bodily regards.

I'm not saying air isn't important, and is likely an important part of specific bodily processes, perhaps even the famed atomic breath's creation, but with a creature that size, you can't rely on it as urgently as a normal creature.

Therefore, I propose that if he does happen to have gills, it's simply a remnant of a past life that continued to evolve (in a nuclear fashion of course!) with Godzilla, and is a way to get some extra oxygen from water without needing to surface to breathe, but it's only a supplementary need for oxygen from any source, and not an urgent life-threatening one.

@ LegendarysGodzilla...In the original Godzilla, he is absolutley described as being a dinosaur. And in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah(Heisei series,) they show the the dinosaur that becomes Godzilla.So I'm not sure why you would say he isn't.  And many of the movies, including the original, never mention any hunger for nuclear power. This occurred in '85 and beyond.
