MemberMothra LarvaeAug-09-2013 7:58 AMThere's lots of aspects of the classic Godzilla that we agree should be in the new movie. But what plot points, character types, story tropes and elements from the older Showa/Heisei/Millenial Godzilla movies should NOT be used in the new film?
I have a few opinions:
1. No psychic phenomena or supernatural stuff.
There's a a lot of this in the older Godzilla films. The psychic powers of the Shobijin (Mothra Fairy Twins), the Venusian ESP memories in Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, Miki Saegusa's ESP abilities throughout the Heisei series, the talk of the ghosts of the war dead in GMK, etc. But the 2014 Godzilla should be straight-up science fiction. Let's take a break from the paranormal business for a while.
2. No aliens or extraterrestrial influences.
The original plan for the earlier drafts of the Tristar Godzilla film involving the Gryphon monster had Godzilla and the Gryphon being created by ancient aliens, sort of similar to the ancient civilizations that created Gamera in the 1990s movies. While this is an easy way to explain away Godzilla's unearthly powers, it isn't necessary in the new movie. Unless King Ghidorah is making an appearance, which I really don't see happening, forget about aliens for now.
3. No overly outlandish futuristic weaponry.
This is another big part of Godzilla tradition. While the Maser Cannons are OK, as they are more believable now than in the 1960s, there's a lot of overly advanced stuff that won't work as well in a more realistic modern film. Things like the amazingly tough Super X III (G vs Destroyah), the black hole generator (G vs Megagiras), and of course MechaGodzilla don't belong in a Godzilla origin film set in modern times. Leave the super-futuristic tech to Pacific Rim.
Any other thoughts on what older Godzilla concepts don't belong in the new film?

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-09-2013 3:17 PM@Kaijukiller, seeing that most likely this will be an origin of Godzilla movie, humans wouldn't really have the need to develop that type of technology for GDF or even a Mechagodzilla.

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-09-2013 4:09 PMPlease keep every one of the important characters over the age of 18. No children allowed! We do not need any cute little kids making decisions for the stupid adults like in a few of the past films.

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-09-2013 4:10 PMNO MAIN FOCUS ON LITTLE LITTLE KIDS (that includes little kids in short shorts humping cars).

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-09-2013 4:17 PM@ Dalek8 so basically nothing from godzilla's revenge and not really anything geared towards little kids.

2. No goofy jumping win poses.
3. No flying with atomic breath.

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-09-2013 10:34 PMThere's been a boatload of things people keep mentioning about the new Godzilla flick his look, the breath, as a musician I really hope they keep his theme music the same!

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-10-2013 9:27 PMGodzilla needs to be slow and lumbering. I love how Pacific Rim got that right. Godzilla should not be jumping around like a pro wrestler!

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-16-2013 8:50 PM1. I agree. Supernatural and psychic stuff should be left to the wayside.
2. I'm more willing to buy aliens if kaiju exist anyway so I wouldn't be so strict about this one, myself.
3. I don't think they'd do it anyway, but in agreement again. Super techie weaponry wouldn't make sense at least until the second movie and if there were a giant mecha created it just wouldn't make sense (despite most of tokusatsu shows saying otherwise, having a giant robot fight a kaiju is not very practical financially or even in terms of effectiveness -- see Pacific Rim [loved the movie but those jaegers got ripped to shreds]). I think using current weaponry and having it prove simply ineffective is a great way to drum up the dramatic tension.
Also in agreement with others. I would prefer no child actors taking a main role in the overall scheme of the movie. Although I can see it maybe happening a little bit if for nothing other than toy sales for kids.
