What Made You a Godzilla Fan?

AdminSpaceGodzillaMar-05-2013 3:21 PMThink back, way back to when you saw your first Godzilla movie. What made you a fan of Godzilla initially? Was it the look of Godzilla himself? Was it the story? What made you a fan? Let us know by replying below!

MemberMothra LarvaeJun-25-2019 12:53 AMWhat made me a Godzilla fan? I guess lame answer would be the whole giant monsters are cool to m thing but in reality Godzilla got me through a rough time. it got me through the fact that I feel hated. maybe that's the reason why I'm addicted to kaiju in general. There cool and well known for being misunderstood and hated maybe that's what makes me like them so much but yea just love the Gman he was and still is my hero.

MemberMothra LarvaeJun-25-2019 7:29 PMWell, it took me a while to join fandub, but I needed something that would make me sure, and what made me realize that I wanted to be in this fandub, was the story, the characters (Mothra as I want it xD)
(By the way I actually speak Spanish xD)

MemberMothra LarvaeJun-25-2019 7:34 PMWell, I had been wanting to belong to the fandub for a while, but recently I became a fan of this beautiful saga, and what made me definitely belong to the fandub was both the story and the characters (Mothra is my favorite Kaiju :3)
(by the way I speak Spanish xd)

MemberMothra LarvaeJun-26-2019 6:46 PMI was raised in Akron, Ohio. In Akron, we had this place called Quaker Square. It was this former train station that was owned by Quaker Oats. It was turned into a shopping center. There was a restaurant there where you could sit in old train cars. But, in the entrance to that restaurant was this big mechanical display of King Kong. At the push of a button, Kong would roar as planes flew past his head. Trains and cars would flee in terror. I loved pushing that big red button. I was amazed every time it came alive and I was transfixed to the large beast causing all this destruction. This was the seed that fueled my lifelong obsession with monsters.
I’d catch the odd MST3k of a Godzilla film, but it wasn’t until 1998 that I saw a giant monster film from start to finish. I remember loving it. I was just a kid with very little knowledge of Godzilla so I had not much of an idea about how unfaithful and disrespectful of the source material it was. But, it was good fun for a young child just being exposed to giant monsters, and I still contend to this day that while it’s not much of a Godzilla film per-say, it’s entertaining. I had limited access to actual Godzilla films growing up. Every once in a while I would check one out from the library if I found one. The first I remember seeing from start to finish was 1992’s Godzilla vs. Mothra. After seeing it I was inspired to write a short adaptation of it that I started but never finished, and it’s been long since lost.
Over time as I got older, I began collecting films of my favorite movie monsters: Kong and Godzilla. It’s easy to own all the Kongs. There are only 8 and the distribution rights are owned by big distributors like Universal, Warner Bros., and Paramount. Godzilla, on the other hand, was a tad more difficult, distribution split up between many companies. I began with some box sets and some individual DVD’s but many films in the series were out of print by the time I started collecting them. So, I took to eBay and second-hand shops. Some were more expensive than others. As luck would have it there have been some fairly recent Blu-ray releases of the harder to find films. With the release of Shin Godzilla in 2016, I was finally able to say that I have seen and owned every live-action Toho film to date. Everything on Blu-ray where available. It’s one of my favorite collections that I have. All 29 Toho Godzilla films, plus Rodan and Mothra and the Mothra trilogy, plus the 2 American films. Right next to my Kong collection.
I have watched all the Godzilla films many times, often marathoning them. There is not one that I do not like. It’s a good time to be a Gfan these days. I might not really like the latest American outing all that much, but I am deliriously excited for Godzilla vs. Kong. My two favorite monsters duking it out on the big screen in front of my eyes will be a transcendent experience. I’ll probably cry.

MemberMothra LarvaeJun-28-2019 8:29 PMWhat made me a Godzilla fan? well, I guess it would be the giant monster action. But really just think all the monster action and multiple Monsters around the world in deep slumber but when Godzilla king of the monsters had been realized in the cinemas. It's now on full out Monster action in with Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan and most of all our main monster Godzilla. And now most of all the main thing I really like about Godzilla is the size, looks, abilities, and most of all his role of being the king of the monster or maybe the god of the monsters while Mothra being the queen. And that what makes me a fan of Godzilla his iconic looks, size, abilities and his role of being the king of the monsters. And I would respect the Gman for that. And he will always be one of my heroes.

MemberMothra LarvaeJun-30-2019 1:29 PMI was a little kid, about 4 y.o at home often because I was sick much of the time. They showed a bunch of old monster movies in the afternoons and Godzilla was on a lot. I have to admit that Mothra and Son of Godzilla were my favourites until I got a bit older (Godzilla kind of scared me at that age). But when I did, I began to appreciate and eventually fell in monster-love with Godzilla. 40 something years later and he's still my favourite movie star.

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-03-2019 12:39 AMBack when I was really really little, I'm talking like 2-3 years old, I saw Ghidorah: The Three-headed Monster on an old tape with my dad, and I was instantly in love. The action-packed fights and charming cheesiness and fascinating (at the time for me at least.) special effects of it all just completely drew me in and made me want to see them all. This sums it up perfectly. And from then until I was around 10, I saw pretty much every Showa Era movie from Toho, the films that my dad grew up seeing when he was my age. Tapes and DVD's from my local library, Netflix's old online-delivery service, thrift stores, and the old Blockbuster and other independent video store from my home town were my supply, and I had almost as much fun hunting them down as I did seeing them. Though unfortunately, by the time I was around 11, I had mostly moved on to other interests, and didn't pay Godzilla and his pals much attention anymore. Kinda makes me sad thinking about, once I got to that age I almost felt a bit embarrassed for liking Kaiju movies, I felt like it made me nerdy and I kinda abandoned it. But that all changed back when I finally watched the 2014 Godzilla with some friends back in May. It made me remember how I felt back when I was younger, watching in awe at these massive monsters battling each other. It felt really good, and helped me fall back in love like I am now. I'm only just now getting back into the game, this summer I've made a goal to watch every Godzilla film there is, I've gotten up to All Monsters Attack, and it's really brought back some great memories, and I'm really looking forward to catching up on the newer films, even if it seems like some are better than others, (1998). It's been great, and now I've just joined this forum to help with that, so hey, it's really awesome to be here, and thanks for reading I suppose.

- I became a fan after seeing Godzilla (2014). The killer soundtrack and the sheer spectacle of seeing a giant lizard throw giant buys through skyscrapers had my jaw on the floor, combined with the experience of seeing it with my friends. I've actually lurked here from time to time, but King of the Monsters was what actually got me to sign up. I was blown away! It took almost everything I liked about the first movie and kicked it up to 11!

MemberBaragonJul-19-2019 6:47 PMWhat made me a fan were the Showa movies on tv back in the early to mid 80's. I love the hell out of them; Still do. What makes me not a fan is the modern fan base. The people here seem to be ok but the ones on TK's forums are so dumb that I question if they can wipe their ass without a tutor present.

MemberGodzillaJul-22-2019 11:26 PMIf memory serves, it was Saturday morning Creature Feature somewhere in the early 1970s and saw Godzilla for the first time. I was way into dinosaurs too, so it fit the bill. Creature Feature was a great show to get exposed to all of that stuff be it Godilla, Kong, Black Lagoon, Frankenstein etc.

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-23-2019 12:24 PMI was a kid in the 70's. Cold winters in upstate NY. Grew up on the edge of a big swamp and woods where it seemed to a kid that Rodan, Mothra, Ghidora and the King of them all Godzilla could be battling. A local UHF channel used to broadcast Universal Horror, 50's Sci-Fi and Godzilla movies and I instantly fell in love with the Big Guy. Massive, awe-inspiring, powerful, courageous, relentless and fascinating Godzilla was better than Luke Skywalker, Evel Knievel and King Kong combined. He was the mightiest being the Earth has ever produced and he never shirked from a challenge or a struggle. Once I got my hands on some vhs movies and could watch them over and over again I was happily doomed and always will be. Looking forward to hanging out with all of you. Godzilla!!!!

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-29-2019 1:50 AMHeck of a question! Waaaaay back in '71 (52 n counting....) KK v G came on and that was IT! Godzilla is implacable, unafraid, ALMOST invulnerable and you can knock him down but he is NEVER OUT. G98 FORGOT ALL OF THIS HENCE WHY IT WAS TERRIBLE. I am loving the resurgence we have had in the West since 2014 and am still blown away by the imagery in the film and artwork of GKOTM - just beautiful. That was MY Godzilla on screen and the music was a massive part of this also. I am not blind to faults in the film but frankly ALL films have flaws and compared to Endgame, it was a plot masterpiece! IMHO ;-) Hello to everyone out there!!! :-)

Gojira
MemberMothra LarvaeAug-06-2019 2:33 AMThe first ever Godzilla movie I watched was gojira (54) I didn't really get anything when I first watched it as a 2 year old I only knew I loved Godzilla for being huge and powerful, also having the capability of shooting his radioactive laser I remember going as far as pretending to be Godzilla and getting my first Godzilla figure, then now I understand him more and what he was made to be and how much he changed. For instance he was supposed to be the example toward the terrors of WWII, now he is a radioactive animal that'll restore balance in nature I went on as a huge Godzilla fan and watched every single Godzilla movie I love his atomic breath, and his iconic roar I listen to for hours, I was amazed the first time seeing his radioactive pulse I guarantee I will always be a g-fan for my whole life because if it taught me anything as a teen it would probably be "Godzilla exists in all of us" (Godzilla 2000 millenium). Plus when it feels like the world is against you stay strong, Godzilla did. I joined this fandom so I can talk more about my knowledge on my favorite kaiju, and see if someone else knows gojira as much as I do. I love how people make such unique, creative monsters. Godzilla forever skreeeonk.

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-11-2019 8:10 PMThe first Godzilla movie I can remember seeing as a kid was King Kong Vs. Godzilla back when it aired on TV a lot during the 80's. I have been hooked ever since. Not sure exactly what it was that drew me in. Before that I had loved Kong having seen the 1970's King Kong on TV, but after seeing Godzilla for the first time I knew who the true king was. I was introduced to it by my father, now I have introduced my son, so the fandom is in its third generation.

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-20-2019 3:39 AMMy passion for Godzilla started like it did for most, as a kid. I saw Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II on TV and my dad recorded it on VHS ( must have been 2001 or around that time). Not only was this my first Godzilla movie, but it's also the first movie that I consciously remember watching, so it's remained special to me ever since. Over the next few years I watched most of the other Heisei movies and a good chunk of the Showa series. And after I kind of lost track of Godzilla during my early teens, the 2014 movie completely reinvigorated my passion and I've been an active fan ever since.

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-23-2019 10:37 AMHmmmmmm I remember being about 4 years old watching the 1986 movie "one crazy summer". The character gets stuck in a Godzilla costume as he's in a prop shop and was told not to touch anything.
Hiding in the bushes to watch out for his friend at a party, some one throws a cigar in the giant Godzilla costumes mouth. The character, now panicked from suffocating, runs through the party destroying everything including a miniature city set.
All of this with cigar smoke billowing from Godzillas mouth xD
Anyways, I found the idea of a giant fire breathing lizard destroying things quite fascinating at the time and after discovering this was it's own series and not just a random lizard costume for a funny movie, (I was 4 guys just bare with me lol) I became hooked....
