GIANT MONSTER STOMPING CITY!
Crushed tanks! Helpless people on a subway train scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them! Whole military units dedicated to defending from giant monsters!

My earliest memory of Godzilla was my first Godzilla film: Godzilla vs Gigan. I remember thinking Gigan was some sort of giant eagle and i kept calling King Ghidorah king Adora. And I thought Godzilla and Angiras was an awesome team up.

Helpless people on a subway train
Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them
He picks up a bus and he throws it back down
As he wades through the buildings toward the center of town
Oh no, they say he’s got to go
Go go godzilla, yeah

Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla was one of our first Godzilla tapes, and I think it got played the most. Probably my favorite out of them all.
Gojira will return.

Great question - but I don't know that I can answer. I have always been a big fan of dinosaurs, of monsters, of cryptids. Why? That is tougher! I do recall getting a license plate for my tricycle (seriously) , in the early 1960s, that had Godzilla on it, long before I ever saw a Godzilla movie. It (obviously) made a big impression on me! I would say two other big contributors were the local theater which showed "kids movies" every weekend -- remember, this is pre VCRs, pre DVDs, pre-cable TV, so we didn't care that these were second and third run movies, they were a big deal to us, and the theater showed a lot of "giant monster" fare. AND a local UHF station hereabouts ran pretty much all of the Godzilla movies, one a week, on either Friday or Saturday nights. They even ran ads for them in the local papers! Watching that run, pretty much "unspoiled" cemented it for me. But again, as to the :WHY" ... have to give that some thought!

I feel that timing and the way those great Toho movies were made is what made me such a fan. I was lucky to grow up outside NYC in the 70's where every local station seemed to be competing against each other to see who can show more giant monster movies. Every week my friends and [] would scour the TV guide in our local paper to see which films would be on this week. We would all meet at my house, since my Mother was the only Mom who not only wouldn't giggle at us but actually watch with us! So, I believe very happy memories is a reason I am still such a fan. The second was the grandness of the movies themselves. Big color spectaculars done so well by Honda with amazing monsters and outlandish plots and truly spectacular soundtracks by Ifukube! They were movies that I just fell in love with!

Mine was actually NOT a Godzilla film. My dad (who died when I was 6) was into home movies in the 70's, and he bought my younger brother and I each a 2-1/2 minute super-8mm movie as presents - my brother got a Popeye cartoon, and I got a silent black-&-white version of "Rodan" (which I still have). I was confused later in life when I played that film reel and didn't hear anything, until I remembered that my dad provided the dialogue and sound effects. Seeing a giant flying dinosaur smahing down through the roof of a building in almost-slow-motion scarred my brain for life, in the best way possible. I may have seen Godzilla before that (my dad was a fan of sci-fi & horror), but "Rodan" is what I believe got me started on loving the giant monster movies on Chiller Theater late at night. Sorry this was so long, I kinda got caught up.

i was about 4, in a target and saw the box for the 1998, horrible american Godzilla (Zilla). i could't get it. couple years later i get a 5 box set of the Godzilla movies. so it was a combo of curiosity, dinosaur fascination and the fact its a huge fire breathing monster that is indestructible. who wouldn't enjoy that. NOTHING DESTROYS GODZILLA!

Okay. I remember when I was growing up. The day after thanksgiving there was always a monster movie marathon on tv. I would plop myself down in front of my tv and not move all day.

Well I was born 1970 and one day my brother and his friends was watching Godzilla . He was supposed to be watching me being 9 years older but when he remembered me I was right behind them watching the movie too . He thought it might be to scary for me so they changed the Chanel but found out every time they changed it I would cry . So I've been watching the big guy since I was 2-3 years old or younger .

Godzilla v Mothra was the first movie and i was hooked. Luckily in the mid 70's these movies played all the time on tv. I still love them today and have passed that love to my sons.

Summer of 1988. I was seven years old, and already a huge King Kong fan. I saw that King Kong Vs. Godzilla was showing on TBS one afternoon, and I started watching it halfway through. I was watching it for Kong, but by the end of the movie, I was hooked on Godzilla. All throughout 2nd and 3rd Grade, I absolutely devoured every Godzilla VHS I could get my hands on. I don't know what it was I loved so much about Godzilla, but it's a fascination that's never left me.

I've been with Godzilla since I was 4 or 5, and everything about him is appealing to a youngling. Plus, you don't realize he can crush you. You're safe.

I was 4 years old when my grandmother put Mothra vs Godzilla on the TV (originally called Godzilla vs The Thing). Since then, I started watching other films in the series, from Godzilla vs Megalon, to VS MechaGodzilla, to even GMK, and the 1956 re-edit of the 1954 classic Gojira starring Raymond Burr.
