Can Godzilla Die? IDW's Kai-Sei Godzilla #6 says yes!

Can Godzilla Die? IDW's Kai-Sei Godzilla #6 says yes!

Can Godzilla die? The answer has always been no, Toho have strict rules in place for licensing of their star Monster – the main one being Godzilla cannot die. However IDW have been given immense trust as they push the envelope with their Kai-Sei Godzilla comic series. The 6th issue in the first Kai-Sei run sees Godzilla follow in the likes of Superman when he died fighting Doomsday in the Death of Superman series. The alternative cover art for Godzilla #6 (revealed by IGN) shows Godzilla having succumbed to the battle with Lament:

Godzilla Product Development Manager Aaron John Gregory emphasizes the emotional weight such a decision carries and urges readers may want to have a Kaiju-sized kleenex box nearby while reading:

Allowing IDW to “kill” Godzilla only six issues in to the new Kai-sei Era series just goes to show how much trust TOHO International has in both rock-star writer Tim Seeley and Eisner winning Godzilla editor, Jake Williams. These types of comic events cannot be handled lightly.

In ’92, as a young teenager I waited in a long line to buy a copy of Superman 75, “The Death of Superman”, and was blown away by the consequential brutality in those pages. I can tell you that the incredible team behind our new Kai-sei era of Godzilla have delivered on that level; with all the electrifying excitement and pummeling panache you’ve come to expect in this series. You may need a kaiju-sized Kleenex.

However, like Superman, Godzilla doesn't stay down for long. The Kai-Sei Gojira will be returning in Godzilla #7 looking more powerful than ever, so fans worried about Godzilla'a untimely demise need not fear:

IDW's Godzilla #6 will be hitting comic shops on January 7th, 2026, but orders will be cut off on November 24th, 2026! Make sure you secure yours within that window!

Correct yes, more so the statement above was for licensing of the Godzilla character, where in the past has been under strict rules stating Godzilla can not die. Toho have killed Godzilla themselves but when it comes to Western representation, they’ve opted to keep Godzilla unkillable, for the most part.
