Okay, maybe ship was an extreme word. Michael Dougherty posted a lot of Chibi fan art of Godzilla and Mothra hugging and cuddling one another. I’m starting to think these pics were supposed to indicate more friendship than romance, but you never know. Go on his Twitter and decide for yourself.

When the director does this... can you blame them XD
I really hope it isn't canon... but they did joke about it in the actual movie...
If people weren't lazy, we wouldn't try to be efficient. If we weren't efficient, we'd never get anything done.
It's been a thing for a long time now, and the new movie has really added fuel to the fire with a full on symbiosis going on between Mothra and Godzilla as species.
Yeah cause TheGman123 is right because GodzillaXMothra has been a while so all it does is add to it. So it could just be a really great friendship or it could be a romantic relationship.
Godzilla has destroyed logic (1973)
A screenshot or link to what Mike had tweeted would have made this topic miles more interesting.
Predator: Badlands - coming November 7th, 2025
I can believe symbiosis, like Mothra being the creature to help clean Godzilla's "ticks" (other Kaiju) in exchange for protection, but not GodzillaXMothra. The farthest my imagination can go is Mothra evolving the spots on her wings to look a little like a bigger Godzilla to Godzilla, so that he will see her as an authoritative figure/parentish thing, or at least be a bit humbled or scared by her. Or intimidated by her.

Well the symbiosis between Mothra and Godzilla is that when Mothra dies her radiation gives Godzilla his supercharged Burning Godzilla form.
Awfully one-sided symbiosis, I'm still waiting to see what Mothra gets out of the deal. Normally in natural scenarios the goal is the survival of both parties, otherwise it would be parasitism. Just the fact that Mothra intentionally goes kamikaze to instigate the Fire mode would imply a level of intelligence capable of understanding sacrifice, so friendship is definitely in the realm of possibility. Anything else? Nah, Mothra's been parthenogenetic since her inception, I'd doubt a 50ft tall moth needs a nigh-400ft lizard for any biological imperative. Though if Godzilla takes to guarding that mystery egg and it turns out to be Mothra Jr., it would all make sense...
I get the feeling Mothra passes her consciousness to her "daughter" and judging how she reacts to her surroundings, Mothra is quite intelligent.
what's the problem with shipping Mothra and Godzilla? and if the director ships them and they are shown as having some sort of relationship in the movie doesn't that imply that his intent was to establish them as a couple in the movie thus making his ship cannon in his own Godzilla continuity? but yeah more to the point, why shouldn't they be a couple? I don't see the problem with it
@SaibaShinrei
It's mostly the idea that Godzilla and Mothra, creatures with very high intelligence but still essentially animals, would understand and want a relationship beyond simple cooperation. Animals of different species forming close bonds is a relatively rare occurrence, and both kaiju have historically been pretty much loners. Also(more crucially I imagine), being a "couple" as usually implied by shippers means a romantic element, and that's just weird on every level. :P
humans are essentially animals too. also your judging Godzilla and Mothra from previous continuities perhaps in the monsterverse Godzillas and Mothras have a historic bond with each other. Also the displays of high intelligence in Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah seem to be on sapient levels.
@Xenotaris
Okay, all good points, I'll give you those. Symbiosis doesn't happen in a day, so a preexisting bond between the species is only logical.
Which brings us back to the romantic implications of the ship. I will totally cede that Mothra and Godzilla could actually be friends as well as symbiotic partners, but anything further than that gets a nope from me.
I hope Toho brings back the days where these two are trying to kill each other and Mothra is just a goddess.
@Gomi: Ninja Monster
Well I wouldn't say there was any romance going on between Godzilla and Mothra, LOL.
