As the title asks - if you had the power to add just ONE Toho Monster to the Monsterverse, which one would you add and why?

Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah are obviously excluded since they will already be appearing in KOTM.

For me, this one's a no-brainer: Gigan! Since I was a kid, growing up on the classic Toho films, Gigan has always been that antagonist Monster who I always gravitated towards. His design and abilities really kick ass and he is one of the few Monsters to actually make Godzilla bleed. He was also my Monster of choice whenever I played Godzilla: Save the Earth for PS2. The character, origins and potential for being a badass antagonist all factor in for me choosing Gigan over all the other Toho monsters.

I would also like to direct attention to KaijuWorld's awesome topic where they discuss how Gigan COULD be included into the Monsterverse - great topic if you haven't already checked it out.

So, Gigan is my pick. What's yours?

Gotta be Anguirus for me. I think he would fit really well.

Either Mecha-Godzilla, or Anguirus.

Godzilla... Truly a God incarnate.

@KaijuWorld Ummm sci-fi doesn't equal to fantasy! remember there is science in the fiction and Legendary Godzilla's design was ment to be more "realistic" than Toho's design, hence why Legendary Godzilla has sauropod feet rather than fat theropod feet, also Godzilla is not a lizard, he is a dinosauromorph which are Archosaurs. Lizards are lepidosaurs; while both archosaurs and lepidosaurs are reptiles, they are two different clades of reptile. Its like the difference between placental mammals and marsupial mammals, but no one confuses an elephant with a kangaroo.

Mechagodzilla just doesn't make sense, not because its "unrealistic", but because its more of a why? Why would humanity especially the US military waste a shit ton of time, money, and resources to make a robot that looks just like godzilla? When you can make smaller and cheaper drones that can mosquito their way up to godzilla and strike his more vulnerable parts?

@Xenotaris

yeah, I didn't really state that the best way possible. what I was trying to say was that any monster (with some real science) can fit in the monsterverse. as you know I made a series based around this and am planning on bringing it back. I am going to try and redo Mechagodzilla after hearing others reactions. I already have some reasons WHY the military would make Mechagodzilla.

1. the humans have no way of protecting themselves. as stated in the trailer of king of the monsters "we are the infection and earth has sent a cure". they need something to fight back. this could also go with your drone idea, but this is where point 2 comes in.

2.  even though that would be a good idea on paper, how are they going to know where a certain monsters' weak spot is. with these kinds of situations, time matters a lot. they need to fight with the 1 thing that is everything weakness and that is being weaker than your opponent. with a giant robot, they can work with an overall stronger force to punch these monsters back or kill them. and hey, maybe you can build drones into the robot for when they do find its weakness. the question now is why it looks like Godzilla, but this is where point 3 comes in.

3. the Kiryu saga explained it the best in my opinion. by using a Godzilla skeleton as the frame of Mechagodzilla. with the point of force being the only way to damage these monsters, the mech must be mobile and agile. this could only be done with human/Godzilla like limbs (especially the tail). put 1 and 2 together and you have a defense mechanism. maybe the monsterverses Godzilla has a skeleton so strong that it can hold tons and tons of weight. this could be the only way they can make a mech as heavy and big as the monsters.

btw, about it costing a lot of money and resources. well, I am not a math expert, but I think 1 giant metal robot would cost less than repairing a destroyed city which with Mechagodzilla could be prevented altogether.

Personally, think these points are enough explanation for why the military would build Mechagodzilla, but that is not up to me. maybe you have some opinions on these possible reasons. but after all the REAL question of this topic is do you want or would you like to see Mechagodzilla in the monsterverse?

Long live the king...

"Why would humanity especially the US military waste a shit ton of time, money, and resources to make a robot that looks just like godzilla?"

Because it's awesome and it's part of the genre. Deal with it or get out.

The whole point of mechagodzilla is just absurd. Why the hell would the Us Military build a robot around freaking bones! That is more of a japanese thing because they worship godzilla.

Alright, to build a mechagodzilla you would need an insane amount of metal to construct everything on and inside of it, metal frame, armor plating, gears, hydraulics, the nuclear casing for the reactors, etc. The Bones would only add unnecessary weight. I mean its the reason why we don't use ankylosaurus skeletons to build our M1 Abrams.

Also again I must reiterate the US Military isn't going to spend a shit ton of money on a damn Mechagodzilla, especially if we know mechagodzilla have a terrible track record as being failures. Drones are more efficient, we know Godzilla's weak spot is his gills, so they would target his gills.

If Drones fail, the US Military would probably either develop a MOAB pacifically for Godzilla or build a huge ass laser defense canon to vaporize Godzilla. If all that fails, the US Military would build an underground stronghold.

The only way that mechagodzilla would work, is if it was an alien construction.

Also your bones don't lift you, your muscles do because bone without muscles are brittle, bone on bone tend to shatter without the between softer tissue. Without the cartilage between the joints, your bones will crack and eventually break that is why people with no cartilage or damaged cartilage need knee, elbow, or hips replacements.

Also the US Military if they ever for some reason build a mechagodzilla, it be constructed a fraction of Godzilla's size. Because that is how the US military build their defense platforms. Also the US Military would definitely go for a more humanoid robot design like the Evangelions, Mobile Suits, or the Jeagers. These are far more adaptable weapon platforms than a using a dinosaur design.

Which is why it's awesome.

"Why the hell would the Us Military build a robot around freaking bones!"

It was explained why it was crucial to use the bones in the film. Snap to attention.

Sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how boring all of that is. Realism = boring.

This is the Godzilla series, not Interstellar. Get over it.

And the hollow earth theory, a moth God, 3 headed dragon, and volcano Pterosaur, aren't? How about a lost island surrounded by perpetual storms full of strange creatures? If you're in the ride so far and Mechagodzilla takes it over the edge you might need to re-evaluate things

In all seriousness, I do see the story problems with coming up with convincing ways to make a MechaGodzilla--The Heisei version was the most difficult to buy. The Millennium version had to use much of its run time to establish the exposition of bio-clones and the need for using skeletons--But it still worked.

MechaGodzilla is absurd, but the entire genre is absurd. It was built on absurdity and if you can't embrace that, there's an exit for you somewhere. It all comes down to the correct writers. Just because MechaGodzilla is hard to legitimize, doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be done. If Toho can get away with it, so can Legendary with the right people.

Probably spacegodzilla as he is Godzilla second greatest enemy and deserves a second chance.

I'm just not a fan of Mechagodzilla, I think he is absurd with the context of the genre. I mean if you want a mechagodzila, fine just don't have the US Military make him, because that will break my willingness of suspension of disbelief.

My parents were both Marines.

But Hollow Earth Theory is just fine. Got it. Check.

I respect that you don't like Mechagodzilla, but how is the absurd within the context of the genre? this genre is made around weird and strange ideas (a lizard with atomic breath, a 3 headed dragon from space, a giant moth seen as a god, etc.).

If you think stuff like Mechagodzilla is (in your eyes) absurd, then I think you are just in the wrong genre.

As much as I'd personally want Mechagodzilla myself, the idea sounds a bit too much for the Monsterverse right now.

We didn't start with the absurdity for absurdity's sake, so we can't just be putting it in there without careful thought and planning.

That's why I think King Ghidorah's addition is so important: he's the first to test the waters of a different kind of absurdity. Make no mistake, giant monsters, Hollow Earth Theory, etc., are all absurd as a rule, but the presentation of certain elements has normalized certain facets of the absurdity to suspend disbelief.

So, with the golden emperor, he has a bit of the Monsterverse's current execution mixed with some extra absurdity; once he's been properly ingrained, things can be branched out. For this reason, I think it'd be best to introduce something like Hedorah or Destroyah as swarming creatures that form larger collectives; the former can even come from space like his original incarnation, to play up the weirdness of space like King Ghidorah.

@kaijuworld

Godzilla is not a lizard damn it! That was Zilla!

I am perfectly fine with Mechagodzilla being an alien construct or being made by Monarch just not the US Military.

Oh come on. It is no more absurd than Mothra in space. It is cool and fun! Besides, there is more actual and applicable science to Mecha Godzilla than most other creatures:

Remember how those huge humane riot control lasers worked out back in 2004ish? Yes, that was military. I could easily imagine the general military experimenting on things like that. Add some DARPA to the mix and there are lots of interesting things being developed.

Jet Jaguar, just so we can have the remix of his song.

Godzilla Generations was a beautiful game! I loved the fact that there's a laser cannon inside of Dr. Serizawa's eyepatch.

Even though it is not a monster, I would like to see a Godzilla v Marvel universe like they did in the Marvel comics #1-24 in 2006. The avengers, spiderman, agents of shield...
