After seeing these two interacting, how could I not? An awe-inspiring film that had me sympathising with every single character!

Haha, brilliant and in fact this very scene is my favourite from the entire film!

How far can we push nature before it pushes back?

Uh, hey gang, they were 300 foot tall parasites; killed hundreds or thousands of, you know, people (your species), and were about to repopulate earth (destroy)...yeah, just loved them.  BTW, most animals show instinctive protection for their young (if they don't eat them) etc...somehow this makes them "cute" and "loving" and "adorable" because we project our human qualities on them. Admit it, you're the folks who feed bears, aren't you?

My favorite action sequence (spoiler alert) of the movie was when Godzilla breathed fire down her throat and ripped her head off--loved it. My second favorite was him tail-slamming the other one... I cheered after both.  Sorry "lovers"...

Oh, Carl... Gareth could have just had the pair portrayed as mindless, destructive beasts, but he didn't. He gave them personality and instincts not too distant from our own. Cherishing our loved ones, grieving for our losses, protecting what we hold dear or need. All our desires spring from the most primal fears. Their nurturing behaviour inspired sympathy for them, as well as the other characters... There was no Good or Evil in the film. There were three seperate parties, fighting to survive.

Do humans have instincts?  I've been taught all my educated life we do not...

I have no doubt Edwards intentionally engendered those things to arouse sympathy...what I'm saying is that Edwards' view of nature is closer to what I'm saying than to what you're saying--he's pretty much said so.

You said it--no good or evil. Those traits are not love, they are only instinct...so our sympathy is yes, somewhat true sympathy (if we're instinctive?), but mostly manufactured by our societal way of antropomorphizing animals.  We do it all the time; here included, and I think Edwards knows it and is making fun of it.  There is SOME connection, on a very basic level as animals, but we intellectualize it way beyond what it really is...
