Maybe the only fans they want to see the movie are those who attend SDCC...I guess....don't think they could take in much of a box office that way so,....I don't know anymore....any body else got a better sarcastic answer??..

Actually, I do have an answer. Not a sarcastic one. There is with any attempt at a Godzilla movie a chance of oversaturation. You cannot show too much of what Godzilla does, because it will ruin the movie. You must be very careful not to spoil too much of his involvement in the movie because in the end the on screen time for Godzilla is less then half of any movie ever produced. It may turn off potential viewers from seeing the movie, as I believe happened with pacific rim. People just are not ready to suspend disbelief to that magnitude before the movie even hits the theatres.
If they know what they are doing 80% of the trailers will either be reactions to Godzilla, destruction from Godzilla, or actual plot hints. I believe showing a full shot of Godzilla, much less a scene of him destroying things, would be a mistake. I know that this plan of action will make hardcore fans angry, but I know that in order to gain a general audience (and with this budget they must come out in droves to ensure any subsequent films either here or in Japan) you must be very careful not to render actually going to the film unnecessary. I would release the first trailer soon. Maybe even the one they showed at SDCC, but I would be very choosy and careful about it, and my plan of action would be to rely on viral marketing and sports sponsorships among other things

Well said, Steamboat, and probably spot on. Trailers or no, we will be going to this movie.
