Rogue Play and Pipeworks Software have teamed up to create an interactive Godzilla mobile puzzle game based on Legendary and Warner Bros.' upcoming Godzilla (2014) blockbuster. Releasing on the same day as the film, Godzilla Smash3 will let gamers play as Godzilla and rampage through cities seen in the film and battle new Monsters.
Rogue Play also teamed up with us here at Scified and Godzilla-Movies.com to give fans an opportunity to ask them questions about the game. We opened a forum discussion where fans could submit their questions and below are Rogue Play's answers along with some exclusive new in-game screenshots!
1. How long has Godzilla Smash3 been in development?
Rogue Play: Godzilla – Smash3 has been in development for 7 months.
2. (from PeteDJ06) What made you decide on a puzzle game as the base for gameplay, as opposed to say, a fighting game?
Rogue Play: When we initially sat down with Pipeworks Software to create this game, we were planning on making a pure action game where Godzilla would destroy stuff, rampage through the city and battle enemies of all kinds. That’s the strongest legacy of our partners at Pipeworks, the developer of Godzilla – Smash3 and veteran of many excellent Godzilla games in the past. But when we looked at making a game for mobile devices, we felt we needed to provide a mechanic that would work for that platform. So we decided on a hybrid game that combined highly engaging puzzle mechanics that work really well on mobile with the pulse-pounding action and destruction that players would expect of Godzilla. We felt we would only be successful with this gameplay if we effectively captured the latter, and we think we have.
3. (from Gojifan101) Will the 'Mutos' be included in the game?
Rogue Play: I’d just encourage you to stay tuned for more.
4. (from Duratok) What resources (models, images, etc) did Legendary and Warner Brothers give you for the game?
Rogue Play: We were able to get the actual model of Godzilla which was really exciting for us. He looks great in the game. We received a few other key models and effects as well.
5. (from Duratok) How much creative liberties were you allowed to take with the game?
Rogue Play: Both Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have been great to work with. We had a lot of creative latitude. We needed their approval on anything regarding the look of Godzilla and any elements that drew from the storyline of the movie. Other than that, we had a lot of creative liberty. It’s been a fun game to work on.
7. (from Gojira2K) Will this follow the story line of the movie or is it just different levels you have to beat?
Rogue Play: It channels the same themes, locations, and general plot of the movie, but should give players an experience that stands apart as well.
8. (from Gojira2K) Will this feature any of the human characters?
Rogue Play: No it won’t – the focus is right on Godzilla and his big battles.
9. (from Gojira2K) Can you upgrade Godzilla with more powerful moves, such as more powerful Atomic Breath?
Rogue Play: One of our favorite features of the game is the ability to upgrade Godzilla – we think it’s something that stands out from typical puzzle games and will appeal to a lot of people who may not consider themselves puzzle fans before picking up this game. Godzilla can be upgraded in many ways to match a certain playstyle.
10. (from Jmac15) In the official synopsis of the game, what does "Call upon friends for help" mean?
Rogue Play: Godzilla – Smash3 is designed as a social game. We can’t reveal every feature yet, but friends will be able to help each other progress through the game and overcome tough challenges.
11. (from Jmac15) Can we expect possible cameos of other monsters or will these be forms of Mutos?
Rogue Play: Keep an eye out and you’ll see!
12. (from TrueAmericanGodzilla) Are there "combo moves" that allows the player to choose what attack to do? Meaning, what combonation do I need for a Bite Attack/Tail Slam/Atomic Breath Attack?
Rogue Play: More powerful combinations and attacks will activate a variety of moves from Godzilla, and skilled players will be able to combine tiles for multiple simultaneous effects. We think players will really like how Godzilla battles his opponents.
13. (from Akagi) What is the chance of a 3DS/Vita port of this game?
Rogue Play: It’s a possibility.
14. (from DaikaijuDanielle) Will music from the film be included?
Rogue Play: Godzilla – Smash3 features an original score.
15. (from Kaijudinosaurfan12345) How much will the game cost?
Rogue Play: The game will be free with in-app purchases. As with all our games, we set out with a clear vision that even if players prefer not to pay, they will be able to experience everything the game has to offer. Players can choose to purchase special boosts and other bonuses to change up gameplay or gain an edge, but they’ll never be required to.
16. (from BigBoss90) Did legendary/Warner approach you to create the game or was it you who approached them with the idea? Also what kind of in app purchases will there be? Life's power ups etc?
Rogue Play: We approached Warner with the idea. The folks at both Rogue and Pipeworks were big fans of Godzilla. At Rogue, we were looking for a property with a strong fan base where we could make a great game for that fan base. Pipeworks had a strong history of making really terrific Godzilla games. So, it was a great fit and we decided to pitch the idea to Warner and Legendary.
17. (from KaijuGoji02) Will there be any boss fights in this game?
Rogue Play: Yes.
18. (from Godzilla'sWrath) How accurate is Godzilla in the game compared to how he will be in the movie? like appearance, color, fighting style? and will players be able to connect phones and pick different monsters to fight each other?
Rogue Play: Godzilla will look like he does in the game. We don’t have a player-vs.-player mode, but that is a great idea and something we’ve been thinking about. We might add that feature down the road.
19. (from Duratok) Will Godzilla's atomic breath in the game be accurately portrayed the same way it is shown in the film?
Rogue Play: Yes. We’re happy to say we had special access to the Breath effect used in the actual movie.
